Thornbury Castle is a beautiful 16th century building, which was once owned by Henry VIII and stands in 15 acres of regal splendour, surrounded by Tudor Walled Gardens. It nestles on the northern edge of Thornbury adjacent to the Gloucestershire countryside, 12 miles north of Bristol, and is well placed for visiting the Cotswolds, the Georgian city of Bath, Bristol and Wales. Following a multi-million pound refurbishment programme, guests will experience a luxurious and sophisticated castle hotel stay, with reference to the history and traditions of Thornbury’s most famous owner; King Henry VIII. Thornbury Castle has 26 carefully-restored bedchambers, all named after key figures from Tudor history. Many with sumptuous four-poster beds and splendid stone-carved fireplaces, making your stay just that little bit more special. The "Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite" boasts the largest bed in a hotel in the UK - 10 feet wide. The restaurant at Thornbury Castle offers plenty of modern, British inspired dishes, as well as some traditional favourites. All dishes on the dinner menu use only the finest and freshest ingredients, many grown in the castle's kitchen garden and herb garden. Afternoon Teas taken in splendid surroundings at Thornbury Castle are the ultimate treat for all guests. The recipient of many prestigious awards for its fine food, Thornbury Castle has three dining rooms, each baronial in style, with stunning chandeliers, panelled walls, heraldic shields and open fires.

I don't even know where to start, the whole experience was fantastic!

I normally have afternoon tea at Thornbury Castle and this time my husband and I stayed at Henry VIII suite, which was out of this world!

My husband and I had afternoon tea, dinner and also breakfast.
The afternoon tea is still fantastic, one of the best ones we have ever had.
Dinner was absolutely delicious, we decided to go for the tasting menu 6 course, and it was the best decision. Every dish was delicious, so well cooked, I have to say that the beef was the best beef I have ever had, so tasty with the right texture, everything was spotless! Brilliant!
My husband also had some help choosing the wine and as I do not drink anything alcoholic the sommelier made me a drink that was perfect and that went really well with all dishes!
The Breakfast was once again spotless, you can choose from a menu what you would like to eat, they also give you options of juices, drinks, cereals, bread, etc.
A fantastic gastronomic experience!

To top it up the bedroom was gorgeous! Henry VIII suite is where Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII spent their time when visiting Thornbury Castle and I have to say that the bedroom and bathroom were extremely clean, the towels, etc had such a lovely smell. The bedroom looks like a dream! I just didn't want to leave it!
Everything worked very well in the bedroom.

The hotel has been renovated during lockdown and I have to say that it looks so much brighter now, which is nice as it was quite dark before. It is stunning! The paintings on the ceiling and walls are stunning. The gardens are looking so great, so well looked after and the flowers are so pretty!
The only thing that was quiet sad was not seeing the vineyard that used to be in front of the castle.

But for me what made the experience fabulous was the staff! What a great team! Every single person was so lovely with us. The receptionists were so kind and friendly, the waiters were so kind, Pedro made sure everything was perfect and the sommelier (I believe his name is Vito) was the friendliest person ever! His knowledge is impressive! He made the whole experience of afternoon tea and dinner much better! A huge thank you to all staff.
I am more than sure that I will returning for dinner and afternoon tea and also to stay again in one of their gorgeous rooms.
I miss the days I spent there already! Completely worth it! Absolutely brilliant!

The most gorgeous hotel ever. We stayed in the Anne Boleyn Room and the bed was incredibly comfortable and the room furnished exquisitely (I took so many pictures for future home decoration purposes)

Make sure you take time to stroll around the garden and visit the small garden farm/vegetable patch. Everything is beautifully kept.

The staff could not have been lovelier.

The complimentary gin and bottled water was a really lovely touch (and the sloe gin from the 6 O'Clock Distillery is sensational)

We have been visiting Thornbury for 20 years and this review is written with a heavy heart. We booked Catherine Howard, formerly the Howard room on Sunday. We had been told about the lengthy and costly renovations. Excitedly we drove down and on driving through the gates we noticed the atmospheric vineyard in front of the castle had been removed and the lawn was not cut.
We got to our room and found that the comforting fire had been removed, as had the antique tapestries, pictures and mirror. The room looked stark and cold in comparison. Some of the wonderful antique furniture remained but some had been replaced with cheap reproduction furniture. Two huge and chintzy chandeliers had been fitted to the wonderfully original ornate ceiling. A sad feeling as we felt the soul of Thornbury being removed.
We went down for dinner to find similar garish chandeliers throughout. The candles and ambient light had been replaced by distasteful bright lighting. Michael Buble belting out Christmas songs was not the relaxed pre dinner background music we were used to.
We were served drinks and handed the A la Carte menu which consisted of a meagre 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts. We were using up a pre pandemic Secret escapes deal which included two courses. We asked about the cost of a dessert and was told it would be £28 each. One of the 3 desserts was cheese which was an extra £7 making a cheese dessert course £35!,
The menu sounded bland and unappealing so we asked if the chef could give any alternatives. The waiter said that this limited menu was common in luxury hotels, it certainly is not. No alternatives so we ordered our food and very sadly it was as bland as the menu suggested.
Disappointed and deflated we slept and the next morning enjoyed a really delicious breakfast before taking morning tea in the lounge. The fire in the lounge was laid but not lit and the lounge was cool so we asked for it to be lit. The receptionist said that the fire could not be lit as it was the hotel policy to only light it in the evening. We said that it was cold and she apologised but reiterated that the fire could not be lit until the evening.
The reproduction furniture and obscene coffee and occasional tables in the lounges and no fire were enough to push us to check out.
In short the progress is actually regression and the atmosphere and soul of Thornbury is being eroded.
The service was not really as it should be and we were left with the feeling that the hotel was trying to maximise revenue at the same time as reducing the level of service in a significant way.
The ‘special atmosphere’ that was very much a feature at Thornbury is sadly lost.

Dear Mark, I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. Please be assured that this is not our usual service standards, and your feedback is much appreciated, and I apologise for the lapse in service quality that you experienced, especially for the fire in our lounge that the staff should have addressed. In addition, I am sorry if you did not find the food offering of a good standard as we received incredible feedback about the quality and combination of flavours. However, for the benefit of our readers, I would like to share some points. As you noted, the vineyard was taken out, this is due to its age and various disease present on it, but in the spring, we will complete the landscaping work to enhance the area. During the refurbishment, 25% of the furniture was restored and then redistributed in the Castle. All the remaining furniture, pictures were not historical and of any value, as there were bought in the 80’s. Moreover, in your bedrooms, all the furniture as the bed, desk, wardrobe, and table were retained. I agree that the fireplaces in the bedrooms were a unique feature, however, while conducting the refurbishment and the due diligence, it came to light that legislation has changed and being a 500-year-old establishment some requirement as the air flow were not met in order to maintain a safe environment for our guests. Moreover, any structural modification was likely to be rejected being a great listed building. I hope that the above points give a better understanding of some changes. Best Regards Simone

Absolutely amazing place to stay and eat!!! We arrived and the actual castle from outside is breathtaking but once entering and the greeting you receive from the reception staff you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. We sat outside and had a drink first before going to our room and a walk round the gardens, the architecture of the building is so beautiful. We were shown to our room and the renovations that have been done are stunning even the carpet has the room names outside the bedroom doors which must have been so expensive. We stayed in Henry VIII room as it was our wedding anniversary so a treat, we were blown away by the size and opulence of the room the furnishings carpet and furniture was so luxurious and from then on it just got better if that was at all possible. The complementary slow gin in the room is a lovely touch too, we booked a history talk about the castle which was very good and definitely worth doing if you love your history like I do. We went down for our evening meal and we were shown into the drawing room for pre meal drinks and canapés which were absolutely delicious, we paid a small amount extra to have the 6 course taster meal and it was so worthwhile the food is astounding the chefs are top class, it’s Michelin star food I have never tasted food as good they definitely deserve a Michelin star and the attentiveness of the waiters they were so pleasant and courteous. The breakfast was so tasty too, there is absolutely nothing negative to say about Thornbury castle the place itself, the food the staff it’s all top class and nothing could be improved on at all, I’m already dreaming of my next stay I just wish it was closer!
Thank you to everyone who works there you should be proud of yourselves for giving such good customer service and to the owners who are making Thornbury such a beautiful place to stay and visit and to the outstanding chefs we had the most amazing stay which we will never forget .

From the moment we booked our wedding elopement, the castle wedding organisers graced us with excellent communication and supported us with making arrangements, making the whole process very easy; nothing was overlooked. We stayed for 3 nights and booked dinner for each evening. When we arrived, we were greeted by the staff, including the hotel manager, and made to feel very warmly welcomed; Pedro went out of his way to ensure we settled in for our champagne afternoon tea, which was simply delectable. Our ceremony in the library was absolutely perfect; romantic, intimate, and very much our dream wedding. The sun shone in through the tall windows and graced us with its presence only adding to what was already such a beautiful and special day. A sincere and special thank you to our witnesses too. We stayed in the Catherine Howard room and were wowed by such luxury, feeling like we were king and queen of our own castle! The bed... oh wow! We melted into the soft, luxurious pillows and were enveloped by the duvet from heaven. We enjoyed an outstanding dinner every night (huge complements to all the catering staff) which was made even better by Frederick's animated passion and enthusiasm for the wine pairing, making our experience even more enjoyable. We would personally like to thank each and every member of staff at the hotel, who together made our stay so special. We really enjoyed finding out about the history of the castle and bringing this information to our many walks around the grounds which were so beautifully kept.

What an utter disappointment. This hotel has been on my must visit list for a few years, particularly as it is dog friendly. We were told it was fine to bring the dog to dinner in the library or snug, which fine for us and quite a common requirement. However, when we were given a bar menu with only burgers, steaks and sandwiches we thought there must be a mistake as we had paid for the dining package. Having queried it, we were told that was our only option. After querying this again one of the main restaurant waiters came through and said we could have the main menu. Quite embarrassing for us to have to ask, twice. And, had we not queried it we would have paid £140 for burgers! The food, however, was fabulous and we could not fault our dinner. 10/10 to the chef.

We had showers before dinner but when we came to shower the next morning there was no shower gel left. We had only used a normal amount the night before - I even ask the hubby as I was so amazed there was none left. It was clearly not checked by the staff when cleaning the room before our stay. In most hotels of this quality, the hotel staff usually come in whilst guests are having dinner to turn back the sheets and check if new toiletries are needed. We feel that not providing enough shower gel is incredibly poor service for a £610 room package... incredibly, incredibly poor.

In our opinion, the service provided by the hotel falls significantly short of that of other similarly priced hotels and other Relais and Château hotels across the world. We were definitely not made to feel like a king or queen as the welcome note suggests, far from it. I would not recommend others to stay at this hotel on the basis of our experience. Gorgeous building, such a shame the hotel really falls short of professionalism. I would also suggest, it would be better if one of the main restaurant rooms (there appeared to be at least 2) could be made dog friendly so that dog owners were able to experience the same restaurant experience as non dog owners, particularly when the hotel champions being so dog friendly..

Would not recommend this hotel I'm afraid.

Living in a quiet rural area of Gloucestershire it is necessary to travel some distance to find somewhere worthy of a celebration.
On the occasion of my wife’s birthday we took a taxi to Thornbury and the Thornbury Castle Restaurant. I had not been there before - this was on the recommendation of a friend.
We arrived in good time and were shown into the lounge bar. It took a little while to be asked for our drinks order but the service was good with warm canapés served with our gin and tonics.
Menus and wine lists were left with us and we chose from the A La Carte menu and ordered a bottle of Gavi to accompany our meal.
We were shown to our table at about 8.30. We had booked a return taxi for 10.30 so the timing was good.
The young staff were attentive and appeared to be well trained although there were one or two very small lapses which were probably due to lack of confidence rather than lack of attention to their duties.
It would have been pleasant for the table waiter to introduce themselves and have rembered to unfold our napkins onto our laps. The correct wine arrived promptly with the amuse bouche but we had to remind the waiter to open it after our first course had arrived. It was a good example of Gavi but just a little too chilled for our preference. After that the pleasant young waiter noted when our glasses needed refilling and returned to the table regularly.
The food served was of a high standard, attractively presented and full of flavour. I felt the portions were to my liking but my wife would have preferred a slightly larger piece of cod.
We both chose cheese and refreshingly it had not been served direct from the refrigerator.
Overall a very enjoyable evening in splendid surroundings.
The final bill of £240 including a very reasonable 10% gratuity was about right for the environment and high standard of food created by the chef.
A big Thank You to all the staff.

So I booked what I thought was a 5 star Castle Hotel for a two night stay. The web site pictures all made it look fab.
So first impression as we drove in not to bad, a lot smaller than I thought compared to the photo but so far so good. You drive through the gates past reception which all looks very nice, then on to the car park. OMG all I can say is you seriously need to sort parking out. There are a few tarmac spaces, then some rough standing, but when full you park at what can only be described as a dump, skip included. It was muddy, so unless you wear wellies you will be ruining shoes (see pictures).
So up to the hotel reception now covered in mud, receptionist was very nice and showed us to a very nice room on split levels.
Part of the New Years Eve package included a History tour, Axe throwing and archery, although we had filled in the request form we was told all the spaces had gone so could not do any. I find it unbelievable that you would not run enough spaces and tours for all guest especially paying £1000 per night.
On checking we asked about booking an evening meal for 7-7.15 and was told the only available tables were 6.30 or 8.30, so assuming it was going to be full we booked the 6.30 table and had a 6 course taster menu with pared wine.
6.30 we turn up for our meal and are the only people in the small dining room, and was the only ones in there until 7.30 when another couple turned up, by time we had finished another couple of tables had people on them but tables empty. So why was 7 pm not available in an empty restaurant?.
The staff are very young and inexperienced (possibly down to covid ) however at £1000 a night that’s is something the Hotel should fix, the food was ok, but the wine pared with each course often arrived after we had finished the course.
Breakfast was good first day (food nice both times) second day we sat next to a couple we had met there and the waitress took their order and ours within a minute of each other. There’s arrived and they had finished theirs and left the restaurant before ours arrived. I asked where our food was to be told “sorry but we are very busy” there were three couples in the main dinning room when we ordered. Again if I was staying at a £30 travel lodge I would accept that, but our bill was £1000 per night.
Because there was absolutely nothing to do at the hotel (history tour etc booked up) we went into Bristol for the day and had a lovely lunch there.

The NYE night meal was quite good and incident free.

Would I stay again, absolutely not.

Was it value for money, absolutely not.

If you are aiming for the high end market you need to massively up your game, sorry.

I am very disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay. Please be assured that this is not our usual service standards and your feedback is much appreciated, and I apologise for the lapse in service quality that you experienced, especially for your breakfast. I would like to reassure you that the car park is going to be completed in the next 2 months. Unfortunately, the works took longer than predicted due to the current challenges ( labors and supply chain). Regarding the dinner time the peak time is 7h30 and due to the set up of the castle we had other tables in other dining rooms that were not visible to you. Nevertheless, it is not an excuse for the less than perfect service you have experienced despite being extremely busy. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would consider staying with us again, and I would like to reassure you that we will do our best to ensure you have a lovely stay. Regards Simone

I was married last week after having to rearrange from August last year.
Throughout the process, Charlotte was so helpful and supported us to rearrange. Due to refurbishments our accommodation was moved from the North Wing into the main castle building, to be honest, the bedchamber was excellent. We stayed in the Catheryn of Aragon suite, which made me feel like a princess and could not be bettered. The staff even made sure our luggage was taken up the 77 stone steps, and looked after my flat shoes that I needed to wear up to bed at the end of the evening.
The whole wedding reception was perfect in every way, Charlotte and the staff paid attention to every detail, from setting out the Great Hall to our specifications, to looking after our guests. Nothing was too much trouble.
The food was exceptional, the breakfast was delicious, my only slight criticism is the breakfast service was a little slow.
The whole experience has helped us to make great memories as we start on our married life together.
Thank you to Charlotte and everyone involved. It was magical.
