Thornbury Castle is a beautiful 16th century building, which was once owned by Henry VIII and stands in 15 acres of regal splendour, surrounded by Tudor Walled Gardens. It nestles on the northern edge of Thornbury adjacent to the Gloucestershire countryside, 12 miles north of Bristol, and is well placed for visiting the Cotswolds, the Georgian city of Bath, Bristol and Wales. Following a multi-million pound refurbishment programme, guests will experience a luxurious and sophisticated castle hotel stay, with reference to the history and traditions of Thornbury’s most famous owner; King Henry VIII. Thornbury Castle has 26 carefully-restored bedchambers, all named after key figures from Tudor history. Many with sumptuous four-poster beds and splendid stone-carved fireplaces, making your stay just that little bit more special. The "Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite" boasts the largest bed in a hotel in the UK - 10 feet wide. The restaurant at Thornbury Castle offers plenty of modern, British inspired dishes, as well as some traditional favourites. All dishes on the dinner menu use only the finest and freshest ingredients, many grown in the castle's kitchen garden and herb garden. Afternoon Teas taken in splendid surroundings at Thornbury Castle are the ultimate treat for all guests. The recipient of many prestigious awards for its fine food, Thornbury Castle has three dining rooms, each baronial in style, with stunning chandeliers, panelled walls, heraldic shields and open fires.

I cannot rate Thornbury Castle high enough. The room was spacious, decorated and furnished to a very high standard and very comfortable. The entire Hotel was to an amazing high standard and has incredible history. The recent refurbishment has not lost any of the historic charm. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very good.

I want to start out by saying that I would, emphatically, stay here again without doubt. The place presents so well even though midway through renovations and the staff are committed to service of the highest levels (exceptions to be dealt with later). Let us be clear, this is a premier Hotel and as such, must be rated against the best and it stands up very well but for minor details (we all know that the Devil lies here). We stayed in The Catherine of Aragon tower room and it was lovely. The climb was a little harder than last time I stayed here (35 years ago) but still worth it in every way . The TV was a little less than intuitive to operate and the channels seemed somewhat random in there listing order, a small detail (but again, the Devil being here) and should be more logical. It is the scale and the presentation of the room that gives a WOW but the fact that the underside of the bed canopy was littered by party confetti bearing a '60' motive suggests that house keeping was not up to even 3* levels my Wife removed most of this but we were unable to reach to remove the '60' marked balloon on top of the bed (I guess this is still there today).

Thank you for your review. I am pleased that you had a pleasant experience. However, I am naturally disappointed that we felt short regarding the housekeeping standard. We noted your comments on the tv and minibar and this will be addressed. Again, sorry for the shortfall and we look forward to welcoming you here again. Best Regards Simone

My partner booked an over night stay at Thornbury Castle Hotel as a special anniversary date for us both. The booking was for 7th October. With the problems with getting petrol we decided regretfully to ask whether we could move the booking rather than risk not being able to get fuel. So we wrote today 30th September asking if we could move the date. To say their reply was rude and most unhelpful is an understatement. We were basically told that the date could not be changed, even if we had trouble getting there and that if we cancelled we would lose our 30% deposit! We wrote back saying that this was not what we expected from a supposedly exclusive hotel only to receive a response saying that our booking was cancelled and that we had lost our deposit. We were given no options and no alternatives......it was just tough luck! So if you are booking at this location please be aware that they do not practice a good customer service and could not care less.

Thank you for your review and feedback. We are sorry to understand that you found the service, not of the correct level. Customer satisfaction is among our highest priorities. As communicated, we can understand the difficult moment that we are all experiencing in the current circumstance. However, being a small property, our terms and conditions state clearly that bedrooms booking are subject to a non-refundable deposit. Moreover, I would like to highlight that you requested to change your booking already once and, we agreed without any issue or charges. Then, you asked to postpone the booking once we contacted you to finalize the details of your stay. In addition, we informed you that if we were able to sell the bedroom that you cancelled, we would refund the value of the deposit or you were able to use the deposit for a future stay. Again, I am sorry that you did find this a poor customer service. Best Regard Simone Arcucci

Stayed here for two nights last week with my partner and we had a delightfully restful stay. All the staff are polite, friendly and attentive. The castle itself is set in pretty grounds that we enjoyed walking around on one of our mornings after breakfast (to the lovely peeling of the church bells). We stayed in the Catherine of Aragon Tower suite, which is right at the top of the castle (quite a few steep winding stone steps up to this suite, so not ideal for anybody with limited mobility!). The suite itself was excellent. The feeling of opulence and grandeur is felt as soon as you enter – from the glorious paintings adorning the walls to the regal, velvety, blue chairs and from the open fireplaces to the high ceilings, plus of course the huge four poster bed with its ornate carvings and heavy drapes - we were told that it is the largest four poster bed in any UK hotel - I can well believe this, as you could easily have slept 6 people in it! The bathroom was huge with a gorgeous, deep, claw foot bath overlooking the church, a massive walk in shower and his and hers sinks. Attention to detail had been well thought out and there was even a small carafe of complimentary gin. The library affords a lovely place for pre-dinner drinks, where we also played chess on the lovely chess board (although there was a piece missing!). Meals were served in the gorgeous dining room – breakfast provided a choice from an a la carte menu along with toast, tea or coffee – whilst dinner starts in the lounge or library, where you select your meal and are presented with hors d’oeuvres before you are taken through and provide with an amuse bouche prior to your meal. The food itself was very well presented. We definitely enjoyed our stay here.

We are thrilled to be back at Thornbury Castle. The castle has undergone renovations during COVID and the rooms, lounges and gardens are terrific. The staff are outstanding and the food is awesome. We have been here many times in the past and will continue many more in the future.
