Stayed for 2 nights in September. The room and bathroom very clean and comfortable. The linens white and decor modern contemporary. The food in the evenings was very good, It gets very busy of an evening but the staff cope very well.If I had one criticism is the staff at breakfast - the young ladies seem a little world weary... Had a lovely Sunday lunch with a group of friends (and dogs). Good, varied choice on the menu, plus specials. The mackerel special was fantastic! Very good service, friendly and efficient. Will return next time we're in Suffolk.

Popped in for a pub lunch while on a day out at the coast with my dog, excellent service friendly staff, great food, made me and my dog feel very welcome, offered indoor, courtyard or garden seating, nice variety of food on the menu, I can highly highly recommend this coastal retreat.

Weekend lunch with a group of friends, reasonable range of fresh and cooked food, dressed crab and whitebait both good. Not Michelin but its a pub and decent value for the food. Some nice hoppy beers.

We stayed in the converted out buildings for 2 nights with our Labrador, we absolutely loved it. The staff were so friendly and helpful, food and beer was lovely and the atmosphere was great. It was very busy all weekend but the service was fantastic, they even rang me before the stay to see if I wanted to reserve a... More

Excellent staff, lovely old building and just next to the beach for long walks. Felt like we were in a novel set in the wilds of East Anglia. Our bedroom looked out over the marshes and the sea.The food was really good quality - we just had the fondue and mackerel pate starters for dinner after a big lunch but... More

Merlin the Labrador and I needed to book a last minute break and so rang the Ship on Monday last week, looking to stay on Thursday. Yes, we could be accommodated. Within minutes, the booking was sorted and a confirmation email received. Upon arrival, we were greeted enthusiastically by staff who could not have been more helpful. Shown to our... More

Having tried to book a room but they were full we visited for a light lunch. Great beer, good atmosphere and we really enjoyed our fish and cheese outside at the front. It was obvious that other diners enjoyed the experience. If we go back to the area we will try to book again.

Hits all the buttons. Massive garden, great selection of beers, interesting menu, large portions, dog friendly, friendly staff, well maintained. Ever so slightly on the pricey side but all things considered a fair deal. Would recommend

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
