We booked 2 nights at the Ship for a mid week break. This is a pub with accommodation and good food very near the beach. They welcome dogs and our two were treated to sausages for breakfast! Dogs are allowed on the beach here throughout the year and there are plenty of interesting walks including Dunwich Heath which was glorious... More

Stayed for one night in the family room - kids in a separate room upstairs which they loved. Had a lovely meal and breakfast also good. Didn't book direct and so was cheaper. 5 mins walk to the beach.

We called in for our lunch after having a walk around this historical old village. We both chose the fish pie with vegetables. It took a while to arrive which was a good sign with the vegetables being freshly prepared. I had a lovely pint of Elderflower bitter which I thoroughly enjoyed. The pub is Oldy worldy and well worth a... More

Fantastic goats cheese and beetroot tart. Honestly the best I've ever had! Left feeling incredibly satisfied and wanting to come back as soon as possible. Everyone else I was dining with had nothing bad to say about their meals; ham egg and chips, ploughmans board, and the crab special. All were beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful lunch x

Had a lovely meal here with friends. It's a good job we booked though as it was very busy on a Saturday evening. We would definately visit here again if in the area. we both had fish and chips, huge portion, couldn't eat a dessert after. The service was good and we didn't feel rushed.

Plenty of both visitors and residents with dogs cheerfully accommodated. Lovely room with attendant feng shui fetish cleaner. Very good sub-gastro grub. Always a fine selection of beer. Very pleasant staff. Gorgeous view of the marshes from the front and a nice big back garden plus courtyard. Plus its on a very quiet road and 2 minutes walk from the... More

My wife and stayed at the ship for a midweek beak. We went the whole package of B&B with evening meal. Rooms are good, comfortable , with plenty of tea and coffee. We had a very tasty 3 course evening meal , and a good breakfast. Good place for a short stay, and car is essential.

Dunwich is a lovely place to stay. Lots of history, a museum, lovely walks and Plenty of places close by to visit. Southwold and the seals at Orford Ness were my own favourites. Anyhow the hotel... the staff were friendly and so help full. They were really nice. Breakfasts were lovely, plenty of choice too and the food in the... More

A really lovely pub in an idyllic spot sadly did not fulfill expectations. The dining room was well laid out spacious and in character with the building. The service was very slow, the staff were struggling but disorganised. No individual waiter seemed responsible, and plates were not cleared in a timely manner. The food was fairly average, the vegetarian options were far... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
