Stayed here for a long weekend. Lovely location just a short walk away from the fine shingle beach which has a beach cafe and toilets. This very popular pub was a good place to stay and had the added bonus of being totally dog friendly. Our little dog was allowed everywhere except the main dining room. There were plenty of... More

I had a day to explore Minsmere RSPB and needed a bed. The staff at The Ship were most helpful From start to finish. I had one of the new rooms out the back and they are excellent. I had a couple of dietary requirements and they couldn't do enough to help me out. Overall experience was outstanding. Oh and... More

The food in this pub is completely home made on the premises including the bread. The scotch eggs are the best I have ever tasted. The quality of the food Here is excellent , never had a poor meal in all the times I have visited . Staff friendly , service very good .

The Ship has a captive market, being the only place to stay or have dinner for some miles around. On arrival I was given the 'guided tour' and booked a table for 7 pm that evening with David, who was very pleasant and tried to be as helpful as possible. When we arrived at the appointed time for dinner the... More

From start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Ship at Dunwich. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and this made for a very relaxing atmosphere even though it was quite busy. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The mixed bean scotch egg in particular as a starter was superb and the main courses were also... More

We stayed for one night in this busy little pub. We had one of the rooms off the car park. Small and compact but everything of good quality and perfectly comfortable certainly for a couple of nights. Excellent breakfast served in the conservatory. Dogs welcome throughout including the large garden. Staff were all very friendly despite the bars being very... More

Fantastic quality, lovely atmosphere, excellent service. We booked for a large group and had a wonderful experience. Service was exquisite, timely and professional. All plates were served without wait, together and curiously - well done! Every dish was thoroughly enjoyed, well cooked and better than The Ships sister pub the Westleton Crown. There is a gastro menu with a good... More

We ate there yesterday with 2 other couples. It is a lovely pub and location. I haven't eaten there for a while, but our friends have. The weather was kind to us as we sat in the covered area. Most of the other tables inside the pub where ether taken or reserved, so I suggest, if you want to sit... More

Visited the Ship three times whist on holiday with my family over the last week and the food is the star whist the service was bad to poor each time. From very grumpy and distracted manager early in the week, who seemed more interested in passing us off to another member of staff rather than see to us, to a... More

It was complete coincidence that after booking a table for 4 at The Ship, I read that Bill Bryson had stayed and eaten at The Ship when traveling through Suffolk compiling his Notes From A Small Country follow up The Road to Little Dribbling and I thought what's good enough for Bill, is good enough for my family and I.... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
