I stayed at the Funken Lodge feb 17th-20th with my wife & our 2 sons (11 & 16). We were welcomed at the entrance & exchanged our shoes for slippers which set the relaxed mood, complemented by stylish lounge spaces (complementary coffee & cake at 5pm were a great way to unwind after a trip), bar and restaurant, friendly and efficient staff. The breakfast & evening menu were both delicious served with a view over the town. The only thing which I find strange is the emphasis on a high class (price) European wine cellar: personally I recommend the local beers! We hope to return one day.

I was unsure if I should stay here or on a slightly cheaper option. Lingering with the thought for a long time. In the end, the choice fell on Funken Lodge despite the fact that it cost a little more. It was worth it - every penny.
From arrival with a wonderful receptionist who kindly shared his knowledge and a glass of something to drink. A great room with a view, and everything else a room should have, which I had requested when booking.
There was no desk in the room. I therefore used the computer on communal tables downstairs with something good in the glass.
Checked out the restaurant. Lovely food although I'm probably more into brasserie. So tried a hamburger later from the bar. Very good.
Breakfast was an experience. Press jug with coffee. Omlette. Really good Svalbard bread. And everything you could want. In front of a fantastic view of Longyearbyen, the fjord and the mountains. The staff here were also incredibly skilled. From a northern Norwegian chef to an Asian. And two good girls who served.
In general, it is the staff here that makes the experience very good. It's time for some nice words, they helped to find some forgotten sunglasses and are at your service when you need something.
I know where I will stay next time I'm in Svalbard. It costs a bit more than some of the less expensive places, but if you can afford it it is very worth it (paid about 200 usd per night with fantastic breakfast).

We are so thrilled we & chose Funken Lodge: The location, all staff from reception to the very knowledgeable restaurant wait staff & chefs were brilliant, room with a view was lovely & we felt we had a really authentic stay. The decor was beautifully chic and the building itself has great views of the area. The food was okay, very well presented but could have been warmer. Food is relatively expensive however nice for a treat - staff were friendly! Dessert seemed quite excessively priced and there was only one choice however I understand perhaps there is difficulty in this time sourcing ingredients

We travelled to Svalbard with somewhat low expectations, we didn't feel we should expect much since Svalbard is so far from the mainland. Little did we know that this would be one of our best experiences yet.
Funken Lodge is a hotel in the same league as some of the flagship hotels in Norway. Quality of the food, materials and service is on par with any luxury hotel. We were surprised over how luxurious the rooms felt, and how the facilities were.
The bar and lounge area is very nice, with a great bar menu with all the drinks you would want and some dishes. Dinner in the restaurant was fantastic, as we went for the 7 course dinner. It's expensive, but of the highest quality.
Breakfast was very intimate with high quality ingredients and very personal service.
The location for the hotel is close to downtown Longyearbyen, which makes it ideal for exploring Svalbard.
When we come back we will probably stay here again.

Funken Lodge is in Longyearbyen on Svalbard about a 5 minute drive from the airport, LYR, and the airport bus takes about 15 minutes as it stops at all the hotels. The hotel is at the upper end of the town and it is a 10-minute walk to the city centre. Funken Lodge is considered on best hotel in town and has an upmarket restaurant and bar with a great choice. Whilst there is a few restaurants around town they get booked up quickly so makes sure you book especially if you are a fussy eater. The hotel has a nice breakfast with a good selection and they also have a afternoon tea between 5pm to 6pm. There is a relax area with gym and sauna just by the entrance and whilst a lot of things are cramped in a small space, the gym has most things you need. Overall Funken Lodge is an excellent choice for Svalbard, and certainly the best hotel in town.

Excellent hotel with very nice touches- very cosy bedrooms with modern bathrooms and good quality toiletries. Quality of food was consistent good and the reception and staff were always helpful. This lodge is situated 10 mins walking distance from the centre but worth the walk, we started our trip there and we asked to go back there before we left Svalbard. Beautiful interior, small comfortable rooms but very functional. Great breakfast, good coffee, bar and evening dinning.

Stayed here for a few nights in February. Took the shuttle bus from the airport and were met in the lobby, shoes swapped for slipper and upstairs for a very quick, friendly and efficient check in. The bedroom was super, good shower, very comfortable bed and some of the biggest pillows ever seen! Dinner in the excellent restaurant was a delight, excellent choice, lovely staff good wines. Breakfast during our stay was fabulous as well, big choice from excellent buffet and choice of eggs cooked to order.
The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Longyearbyen, taxis are also available.
Without a doubt the best in town!

Hi rvashko! It is a fifteen minute walk or so, I did it during night when I was there three weeks ago. The streets are lit all way, although a bit more murky and more separation between lamp posts the last 400m. cross-stretch from Nybyen if I remember correctly.
There shouldn't be much of an issue, dress warmly, wear reflexes, and keep eyes and ears open for polar bears. They are seldom sighted in town but keep it in mind.
Please note that there is no more regular Fri/Sat nightclub at Huset but only specific planned events that might resemble a nightclub, the information up on "visit svalbard" is false.
Great restaurant though.
Hi Gloucsj, The hotel has been closed in December and January for foundation works. It is a historic building from the 1950s, and needed some tender loving care. Spitsbergen Hotel will reopen tomorrow, February 1, and we look forward to seeing you at the end of the month.

One addition; in the winterperiod you might want to consider bying these spike overshoes. The ground is covered with inches thick ice with no grip (some gravel at some points), without spikes you will fall a lot. I have no experience about the summerperiod.
There are more places to choose from in the Longyearbyen area.
