Located in Nybyen, 2 km outskirts of town, lies Gjestehuset 102. From 1946 until 2001, the guesthouse was the home of the miners. In 1999, barrack 102 became Gjestehuset 102. Gjestehuset 102 has 61 beds (single rooms, double rooms, and 4-person dorms). We offer lodging with character, a casual atmosphere, history, and soul. We do not offer a luxury stay, but a 5-star experience in the Arctic. Welcome to Gjestehuset 102, your home away from home!

The term 'budget' has to be put into context here - nothing is really budget in Longyearbyen, but this place was the most reasonably priced option available. The breakfast offered was very good, I was able to check in at 2am after a long flight, and its very clean and comfortable inside - guests remove shoes when they go in which definitely helps. It is a busy place though!

I really enjoyed my stay in Gjestehuset 102. Everything was amazing here. I stayed in a dorm with 3 other people, the room was just nice and warm enough at night, and what I like the most is the view from the window, a huge beautiful snow mountains! The toilets and bathrooms are clean and plenty, during my stay for a week, I never had to wait to use one :)) The breakfast was buffet, simple yet more than enough to fill you to start your day. There was a living room and dining room where you can meet other travellers and make friends. The best part is the staff there, I met Angie, Christiane, and Khristin, they are amazingly helpful, friendly, and really try their best to accommodate your request. I communicated with them before my arrival to plan my activities there (there an activity calendar about things to do in Svalbard and they will help you to book them, I highly suggest you to plan in advance as some activities can be fully booked) and they were so helpful and gave a fast response with lots of my questions and especially I had a pretty tight schedule and they really helped me to manage all of them. I also can see their genuine care for the guests with a small gesture like asking about your day or even trying to help you even if you meet them outside the guesthouse, really appreciate that kind of attitude! The other staff in the kitchen were also sweet and friendly. Love them all!
About the location, while some people said this place is far from the center, I would say I love the location! The location is less than 2km with flat path or around 20minutes walking and for me, I love walking back to the guesthouse from the center (and vise versa). The view was incredible, making the distance was nothing. It’s not kind of view that you will see everyday, so just enjoy the walk, even if it is cold, you barely feel the cold when you are walking. You also can take nice photos and videos along the walk. The path is safe, I often walked at night, and in the main road, yet it is only few cars around.
I highly recommend this place to stay in Longyearbyen, and if I return back to Longyearbyen (to see the northern lights!), I will definitely stay again in Gjestehuset 102!

Thank you so much for your kind feedback, rearke! We really do appreciate it! And we are so happy to know that you loved your stay with us. It was our pleasure to be a part of your Svalbard adventure- a memory you'll have forever :) It is amazing that you loved the walking part as well! It is indeed a great view to walk up and down, we cannot get enough of the view and still take a lot of pictures ourselves. Thank you for staying with us, and we really do hope to see you again some other time in the future! To inspire you more, we had an amazing northern light show last night :) See you! Best Regards, The Gjestehuset 102 Team

We just came home from an amazing stay 102.

Higly recommended!

We got a early bird price at 114 $ per night.

This is by far the cheapest price for any accomodation in Longyearbyen.

There might maybe be a few private room AirBnB's that maybe can match it, but then you are realy lucky.

The rest of the Hotels and Guesthouses in Longyearbyen are crazy overpriced starting at around 200 bucks per night. This is expensive eaven compared to mainland Norway.

Gjestehuset does the job. It is warm, safe and clean. It is in walking distance from the center, and a very nice brekky is included.

The staff is wonderfull and kind and offered me free homemade spicy chicken.
Thank you so much. :)

Dont expect the Hilton, but i guess no one with a little bit of research will when they compare with the rest of the options in Svalbard.

I did not ask for the Hotel room price when I was in Pyramiden, that might actually be cheaper. :D

Anyway, great people, great place. Would stay again for sure. <3

The room is basic, very clean and serves it purpose very well. The shared spaces are also very clean and welcoming. Tea and coffee available 24 hours and the morning breakfast is more than adequate. Staff when available are very helpful, friendly and willing to share local knowledge.

The only slight negative I would say is the lack of availability in the evening to the reception shop where they sell some snacks and cold drinks but this is very minor when you consider the overall service, quality and value of Gjestehuset102

Hello eamonnm172, Thank you so much for your detailed feedback. Gjestehuset 102 appreciates it! We apologize for the lack of availability in the evening during your stay. We usually are open until 9 PM, and during the previous month, January, we thought that we may not need to open until night since we did not have much guests. But thank you for letting us know about this, we will consider this. Now the season starts and we are open from 08:00-21:00 without breaks, and hopefully in the dark season too! We hope you had an amazing and unforgettable Svalbard experience! We hope you'll com back in the island one day and stay again with us :) Cheers! Best Regards, Gjestehuset 102

Gjestehuset 102 is an awesome budget accommodation in Longyearbyen, very reasonable rates. It has all services, it's clean and rooms are essential and comfortable. Good breakfast. Personnel is very nice and helpful with tips, support and reservation for activities.
The location is just 20-25 minutes up in the valley from town center, not isolated but peaceful and with a beautiful view.
Definitely recommended, I will come back in the arctic summer!

The place is located at the end of Longyeardalen, about 40 minutes walk from the shop/museum section of Longyearbyen. It's a simple but friendly and cosy accommodation and has everything you need. I especially enjoyed the variety of people from all over the world. (We usually kept discussing things until 2AM.) It has a proper kitchen and fridge, allowing you to cook for yourself. Good quality wifi allows you to keep contact, upload your photos/videos etc. I was there in January and one of the perks of the place is that you can walk about 100m up, toward Longyearbreen and get into a relatively light pollution free zone, allowing you probably the best northern light vantage short of leaving the town premises. (Do keep an eye open and go with others though. It is the edge of the safe zone!)

We stayed for 10 days and enjoyed our time at gjestehuset very much. Especially the staff does their best to help with any question and keeping everything clean and nice. The clean and modern bathrooms actually surprised me positively as it's not easy to provide good shared facilities for so many guests.
So thank you very much again, Angie and the whole crew for taking care of us so nicely and friendly. We sure will come again!

It's a nice simple place with clean rooms, working facilities and very friendly & helpful management. Located a bit off the city center, but it's a pleasant walk, and not a long one.
I stayed at 102 in 2016 and 2020 and will choose it again if i happen to come back to Svalbard - as much for hospitality as for the price (most likely the cheapest in Longyearbyen) and the manager's readiness to help in whatever your requests might be.
Highly recommended.

The hotel was really clean and tidy, and it had all the facilities needed. The beds were comfortable, and it was realy nice that coffee and tea were there at all times! Moreover the staff was really helpful and friendly, we even got served homemade springrolls for free the first night since me and my friend were so hungry:-))) They were also realy flexible with the check out and everything went really smooth and easy for us. Super good value for money, would recommend everyone!!

Friendly, helpful, kind staff! Very clean. Affordable price, good breakfast and coffee always there! Super nice with children also.
They even upgraded me to a private room, when they had free space!
They let us stay and cook there when we were already checked out. And were super nice with my nephew (7). I would recomend the place for any visit, bussines, family, friends, solo ...
Breakfast was great. And when you needed some help about the trips whey would organize it all for you. Or call you taxi if needed. Price to stay is affordable and you get 100% what you paid for.

Hello there, Thank you for your question. Do you mean a sled/sledge? There is unfortunately no sledge rental in Longyearbyen. To get to town, it is safe to walk, though it takes 25-30 minutes. It is also possible to get a taxi :) Let us know if you have further questions. Best Regards, Angie Gjestehuset 102
