The Aldemar Knossos Royal hotel offers a diverse atmosphere where guests can enjoy both vibrant entertainment and moments of tranquility. Its stunning location is well-regarded for sea views and sunsets, although some guests may find it a bit secluded.
While the cleanliness and service generally earn high marks, with staff commended for their dedication, room experiences vary, with some noting maintenance and decor concerns. The hotel's amenities, including pools and dining options, are popular, but the value for money receives mixed reviews.

Hotel's Favorite
From the very start of the holiday, it was destined to be a great 10 days.
Having communicated the reason for the trip prior to arrival with the GR team at the hotel, I was delighted to find we'd been upgraded to a Bungalow with private shared pool and even better had a sea view! we arrived around midnight and there was a snack in the fridge and a birthday cake and champagne for my wife which was a nice, unexpected touch.
The rooms are more than big enough with a balcony (we were on the first floor) the ground floor ones have a larger outside area which is directly next to the pool so IMO the upper floor provided more privacy. We were in block 500 which is within touching distance of the beach. It should be noted that this area is quite close to the hotel next door which has some outside musical activities most nights but once the doors are closed and the air-con left on, it's barely noticeable.
The restaurants on site are excellent. The main buffet restaurant is used for breakfast with the snack bar being used for the lunchtime meals. All of the these are presented with loads of choice and more fruit than you could ever wish for. The onsite ‘a la carte’ restaurants were all tried. The AI+ option we were on permits all the evening meals to be taken in these restaurants which is how we planned things. The booking is done through the App which you get access to on arrival. Book for the nights you want in one go as I can imagine availability being pressed when the hotel is full. All the a la carte restaurants are fantastic.
The gourmet restaurant (Rizes) has quite a limited menu unless you want to put your hand in your pocket – the food is great, service incredible and the view is to die for.
The beach restaurant (lunch only) serves great food and is a really nice environment. The only challenge is that access to the beach WC and beach bar is gained through the restaurant area so can be a bit ‘busy’ with beachwear.
Artemis is the Greek restaurant. The portions can only be described as enormous. If you are not a pro eater, pace yourself or you won’t make it to the end.
Our favourite and without doubt the best experience on the resort is Fontana Amarosa. The team at this restaurant made our holiday. We went 3-4 times and tried everything on the menu. Again, the portions are huge, but the environment, view and ambiance make this a must. The team re all incredible. You’ll see them during the day ate breakfast and lunch elsewhere but when they are in this place, they just gel together and make the whole experience a delight. Congratulations to the management on their selections here. It just works!
The bars can get busy. There is a smaller taverna type bar which has a great view and is more secluded. There is also a bar next to Fontana Amarosa which we didn’t try due to its opening hours, but it looks great too.
The beach bar is you source of refreshment when on the beach. It can get busy but the staff are friendly and like all the team at the Knossos Royal, work their rears off.
Housekeeping is amazing. The room was looked after daily and there was always a fresh bottle of water in the fridge (at one point we had about 4 so there is no shortage). All the staff work really long hours and extremely hard but are just amazing. There is always a smile, and nothing is too much trouble. Guest relations are really helpful, and we’d recommend the trip to Heraklion to have a look around.
It's quite difficult to find any faults with the resort. It’s not overly mobility friendly – bear that in mind if you are booking. It’s on a slope and there are steps, not loads but enough to make it challenging. The beach isn’t sand. It’s fine shale but not a problem. The sea is warm and was very calm whilst we were there. It gets busy but there are lots of sunbeds available. We had a private pool so didn’t use the main ones. Both had loads of beds and there was no shortage of activities. Why people think it's OK to go to an evening meal, in a quality restaurant in beachwear never ceases to amaze me. Get dressed up... it's part of the experience and one I think the resort should actively enforce.
We had an incredible time. Make sure you take in a sunrise and a sunset from the rocks at the end of the beach. really easy to get to and absolutely breath-taking (see the pictures!) It was my wife’s birthday and our first wedding anniversary whilst we were away. The resort marked both occasions off the back of a note from me. Little touches that made the experience that bit more special. Would I recommend the Aldemar Knossos Royal? Absolutely. Did it feel like a 5* experience? Definitely. Would we go again? In a heartbeat. Don’t forget to eat at Fontana Amarosa… you will not regret it!

Dear mikemI3293CQ, Thank you so much for your incredible review! This was my first time in Crete and landed here after a few cancellations at other destinations due to Covid. Most importantly I felt very safe from Covid in the hotel complex and the journey was also better than expected. Masks are worn by all staff and they worked hard to keep up safety standards.
TUI booked me into a seafront room with shared pool which was is a good choice as there’s no rush before breakfast to get your towel down. Two sun beds are reserved for each room with a safe distance apart. There is plenty of space and these shared pool areas are never crowded. The main pool was somewhat busier. My room was pleasant, clean and air conditioning worked well. I think my room had had somewhat of a recent makeover but it was still quite ‘standard’. I was on the second floor without direct access to the pool but it was nice to leave the patio door open at night and fall asleep to the sound of the surf. During Covid rooms were cleaned every two days but you could request daily or have replacement towels sent.
The view from the room was very nice but the beach is not the finest I have visited. It’s very rocky outside the hotel but there are a few bays with calmer water a short walk away. The water however is crystal clear.
Food was good in the buffet, the a la carte and beach restaurant were wonderful and the taverna was also good. The drinks were not great, local brands but you could upgrade to branded for €1.50 or bottled wine for 50% off. This seems something that is standard for Greece even in a 5* but something I didn’t expect. I have been spoilt by other countries where Grey Goose and Hennessy are now the norm in comparatively priced hotels. The house wine and beer was not to my taste but again you could upgrade. Bar staff were always very overworked and there was usually a somewhat tiresome queue by the beach bar, they really needed two staff instead of one, but lower staffing level were probably a result of cuts due to Covid.
Staff and service were always polite and efficient. I liked the friendliness of the Greek people and they all worked very hard to ensure you had a pleasant stay. You asked for something and it was done quickly and with pleasure.
I actually feel very blessed to have got away this year and I did thoroughly enjoy my stay at the Alderman and it actually felt quite near normal under the circumstances of 2020. It’s a large traditional style beach resort, a little dated but well run and the staff are delightful. I’d return again happily but I’d definitely book the shared pool room or in the Villa section.

For starters, ignore the one and two star reviews as this is a perfectly good hotel and you will have a nice holiday.
If you can, upgrade to the VIP sea view room as it gives you access to a really nice private pool (see pictures) that is next to the beach and pool bar, so you have access to the all inclusive drinks and are not fighting over sun beds as they are allocated. If you can get a ground floor room it has direct access via steps (ours was first floor which is still fine).
The room itself is comfortable and has been refurbished (I think) with excellent air con, nice bathroom with great shower and comfortable bed, albeit two large singles pushed together (not the end of the world).
The hotel itself is set out in large spacious gardens with low rise buildings which is nice and well kept.
The restaurants are main (buffet) which is good with a reasonable choice. Breakfast is ok, with plenty of options but still buffet (served due to Covid restrictions), the A La Carte restaurants are really nice with the Fontana (Mediterranean food) really good right on the sea front with a choice of main courses and nice quality in a “fine dining” style.
The Artemis is a Greek Taverna type restaurant, less “fine dining “ than Fontana with a five dish meze starter and a large mixed grill which was very good.
With a seven day stay you get a visit to each but I can imagine for two weeks the buffet would get repetitive although you can eat it the a la carte for a 25% discount on food or 50% on bottles of wine (or just have the all inclusive drinks for free).
It’s worth popping to the old town for dinner one evening (even if all you’re inclusive) as it’s very quaint and the food and tavernas are excellent and very reasonably priced.
All inclusive is local spirits, but for about €1.50 you can upgrade to International spirits which is reasonable and you also get discount at the Beach Bar which makes it a good option for lunch.
So no real complaints, maybe the beach bar could open an hour longer, the main restaurant buffet food for breakfast is a bit repetitive and the only option for lunch is the snack bar (but it’s pretty good) and the evening entertainment is a bit average but all in all you will have a very nice holiday the hotel is good and the staff are all very friendly and helpful.

From the moment we approached Aldemar, we could tell that it was not of 5 star standard, as the buildings at the entrance were rusting. Nobody greeted us at the entrance and we were not offered a refreshing drink on arrival.
At check-in we were not provided with all the information related to our all inclusive stay, so we had to go back and enquire later on.
The only positive experience we had with staff was the friendly buggy driver who took us to our room. Our first shocking experience was the lunchtime buffet, where we were served something which resembled spaghetti hoops. Their approach to COVID-19 safety measures was questionable. Crowds formed when people were queuing for food (rather than offering table service). They also did not cater to a vegan diet. There were lots of food options which would cater to a family. However if you appreciate quality food, this place is not for you.
We stayed in a sea front room with a private sharing pool, which was clean and calm. The chairs by the main pool were clearly reserved very early, so we would advise paying extra for the private sharing pool. The beds in the room were comfortable with a spacious bathroom, however the shower door malfunctioned and I was trapped in the shower for 30 minutes! The shower also flooded the bathroom so we had to deal with a wet floor for the duration of our stay.
The gym on site was spacious with a good range of equipment, and they provided towels and sanitising gel.
The best part, was escaping the hotel and driving across the picturesque countryside.
I would avoid at all costs unless all-inclusive 80s time warp is your thing. No photos as we would like to erase the memory of this stay from our minds forever.

Dear davidlaval Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Aldemar Knossos Royal Resort. Whilst we were extremely pleased to read your positive comments about the equipment of the gym, your room that you stayed and the friendly service displayed by all our team members, we were truly concerned to see that you felt let down by the food sorry that you were not able to fully enjoy your experience with us. We strive to exceed our guests' expectations through individual and personalized experiences, and showing as much flexibility and adaptability as we can, and it is therefore disappointing to hear that we failed to deliver the famous Aldemar Resorts Hospitality promise to you. As we have checked our files, we haven’t found any mentions regarding vegan food requests from you and we are indeed sad you haven’t contacted any member of our staff to help you with your special dietary requirements. There are constant checks and evaluation of the anti –Covid 19 measures taken place at our hotel and we successfully have been certified as a safe hotel for vacations. You must have noticed the sanitizers available around the hotel, the distance between the sunbeds, tables at the restaurants .We have also changed the way we serve the guests and deliver the keys upon arrival. Our housekeeping staff are taking care of the common areas with great care and using special detergents when cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces that can be touched by different people. The queues at the restaurant are a rarely created and are being controlled by the maître and other hotel staff. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you further on this matter at your earliest convenience, and do hope you will give us another opportunity to welcome you back, at which time we will spare no effort in providing you with a seamless experience. We rebooked our trip to this hotel last minute. We have not regretted this for a moment. What a fantastic hotel! Large and spacious, but still very cozy. Very luxurious, yet warm and personal. The location is beautiful, right on the beach, where there is usually a nice breeze. If you want to be a bit more sheltered, a kind of bay starts at about 5 minutes walk. Renting a car is recommended, because only Hersonissos is within walking distance and it is a bit remote, but in a beautiful area. You can snorkel in front of the door and around the corner.
How lovely, hospitable people work here who do everything to make your holiday unforgettable! On our 13th anniversary we were surprised with a bottle of champagne and freshly cut fruit in the room, super sweet and thoughtful! The food was delicious and very varied and was portioned or scooped up by staff.
Hygiene was fine and every effort was made to ensure safety without sacrificing the carefree holiday feeling. Very friendly and alert lifeguards were present at the pools and on the beach all day. All day Michalis made sure that everything around the pools was neat, clean, safe and hygienic. In addition, he was always ready to lend a hand. With the umbrellas, the sunbeds, etc. Or just for a nice chat. What a hardworking, friendly and social young man.
Finally, my special thanks to the people on the animation team. I have never experienced such fun and professional animation. The animation was really international and not aimed at guests from one country. They were very active and inviting to everyone, but never pushy. Despite their extensive hygiene measures, they managed to organize very nice activities for jong and old.
Dado, Ricardo, Frederica and Justina from Pink Wave Animation and all the staff of Aldemar Knossos Royal, thank you for the unforgettable holiday, our best ever! We will miss you!
Lots of love from Free Willy from the Ocean, Keanu Reeves from Hollywood and Elize and Soraya from Holland!

We had a decent week here but I was disappointed and would not rate the hotel 5*. The hotel work very hard to keep things safe. We tended to wear masks when walking around but this was not mandatory when we were there (that may have changed in that area of Greece) but overall things felt safe. The hotel itself is tired and the rooms are basic. We paid for an upgrade but I'm not sure I'd expect to pay E50 a day to get a reasonable room (especially when I had already paid the sort of price you pay for a 5* hotel). Lots of niggles (no milk for tea all week). I understand why cleaners are not coming in as often (and agree that is better and more relaxing as you often get woken by the cleaners in many hotels) but they need to leave more milks/ toilet rolls so you don't have to ask. Food were pleasant and drinks plentiful. We found the main restrant to be busy so we used the snack bar where it felt more spacious / outside and the food was really good. You can also get breakfast there 10 -11. The beach is nice and there are plenty of beds there. We had a sharing pool (upgraded at our own cost) and the room and pool were very nice. Overall I would come back to this area but stay up in the hills next time (definitely worth going into the villages in the hills and the old town as the food up there is amazing). There is not a lot around this hotel so if you want a quiet environment this might be for you. I would generally say it is a hotel for children and there seemed to be a lot for children to do (we didn't have any). I would have preferred some adult only areas (perhaps opening the beach bar in the evenings for adults). The food in the beach bar was lovely and nice views. Overall, you will have a nice time here and the staff are lovely (probably not chatting as much as usual because of the covid which is totally understandable).

This is one of the most amazing hotels we have ever stayed at! The food was amazing with a great variety of choice and all the staff were amazing in making our holiday even better. Staff wore face masks and hand sanitiser was available in many places of the resort. The room itself was spacious and had many space for storage. Hotel staff helped take your bags to your room with a golf buggy and were happy to bring you back to reception upon departure. We arrived at the hotel at night when the restaurant was closed but reception provided us with a paper bag with: sandwiches, nutrition bar and some cake which was a nice touch! The people who made our holiday the best were the animation team! We enjoyed all the activities they had to offer such as: aqua gym, darts, zumba in the pool and many more! The animation team also performed an aqua disco which was definitely a favourite of ours. Words can’t describe how amazing they all are. Thank you to- Dado, Ricardo, Justina, Federica, Hubert and Cezary for making us have a great holiday during these difficult times!

Paid to upgrade to a seafront room with shared private pool for 50 euros per day B&B, which was much better than a standard garden room, although we were annoyed to see other people making use of the pool area despite signs saying it was private to certain rooms! Lovely to be so close to the sea, although the beach was very stony and sea rocky.
Beach restaurant was nice but closed at 16:30 for food. Booked the buffet restaurant one evening at 25 euros pp, was ok.
Booked this hotel on the description of nearby restaurants but actually only one in close proximity, rest were a 12 euro taxi ride away, David Vegera was excellent as was Monastery.
Room was ok, bathroom quite small and nowhere to hang towels; only one pillow each which was rock hard, had to ask for a cover and, because they only serviced the room every other day, we had to ask for toilet paper.
Apparent that most people were there on an all inclusive basis.
Other restaurants only open on certain evenings.
Reception, cleaners, porters and waiting staff very friendly; bar man was a bit abrupt.
Jet2 flight was cancelled so had to book another night in the hotel and they wanted to charge full rate which, considering they weren’t expecting new business, I thought was a bit tight. Jet2 rep negotiated down by 20 euros.
Not 5 star in UK terms but ok.

This was our first time visiting Greece and staying at Aldemar Knossos Royal has been an absolute pleasure. Upon arrival check in was easy, staff were helpful and made the process smooth. With the room, we only had one pillow each and no further sheets/blankets, however this was easily rectified through ringing Reception and was sorted immediately . The pool facilities were excellent. We spent the majority of our time at the main pool where finding a bed and ordering drinks was easy. One of the aspect that we enjoyed the most was the food, especially the snack bar at the Main Pool. The food was incredible and there was such a wide range of choice. In terms of the drink, this was a bit hit and miss. On our first night, we ordered a Pina Colada and this was literally like drinking paint stripper so we had to leave it. However, when we were a little bit more specific with our drink orders the drinks were no problem and the bar staff were more than happy to accommodate. Finally, a big shout out to the staff who made our stay memorable. Firstly, all the waiting staff, cleaners, receptionists were incredibly polite, always saying Good Morning and couldn't do enough to help you. A special mention to William at the Kafeonia Bar who did a great job. Despite being by himself at the bar, he was excellent. Finally, a big thank you to Giampi and his animation team who are a credit to the hotel. The activities they offered were brilliant and were inclusive of everybody. They also weren't too pushy which is key for being to able to relax on holiday. But most of all they are incredibly good at their job. To be able to communicate in various languages, provide great entertainment whilst allowing people to have a fantastic time is a real skill. We are sad to be leaving but leave with great memories.

We stayed for 10 days in a VIP room with shared pool. It is really worth paying extra for the shared pool, it's a full size pool and we were often the only ones in it. You were allocated your own sun lounger for the duration of your stay. The main pool was busy with the usual early morning wrestle for sum loungers. I think our room must have been recently updated as it certainly wasn't dated and we had a lovely view of the p.o. and the sea.
The hotel was scrupulously clean, I felt safe throughout our stay, all staff had masks, sanitiser everywhere and lots of cleaning. We only stayed bed and breakfast, good choices at breakfast plentiful, tasty and served to you. We ate lunch a few times at the beach restaurant, food was gorgeous and exceptional service by Aphrodite. Staff were all working hard and friendly. Only negatives were our tea/ coffee etc in our room were never refilled throughout out stay meaning we had to ask at reception, very hard to get served at bar in evening, we didn't bother after first night of waiting 40minutes. Also at breakfast was a daily challenge to get tea/ coffee, cutlery, sugar at the table. Not sure if these niggles are due to less staff?
We ate out every night in Hersonnisos, takes about 40 minutes to walk along the coast, wide selection of restaurants, we walked every night and taxi back was 8 euros.
We will return and hopefully explore Crete more.

I do not drink alcohol. But I can say that every cocktail on the menu is available for the all inclusive except maybe two or three. As an all inclusive plus I would expect that these would be available to you. All beers served and wines are also all inclusive. I have tasted the lager and can say it’s not awful and tastes a bit like a coors light.
Yes you can dine with children we did and was treated like royalty on our visit .
Not too salty in the private pool - our 5 year old was okay getting splashed, but she wore goggles much of the time.
