I would say this is 3 star hotel for the following reasons… Lovely grounds and pools, although inside pool has not been touched since it was built in 70’s. Hotel location is great a 20min mainly flat walk to town. Please note some excursions (orange travel) refuse to go to hotel due to its remote single track road which can be awkward and time consuming when two/three coaches meet As 5 star hotels go, it’s very understaffed and therefore lacks quality. Don’t get me wrong the staff work hard but are put under lots of pressure by management who feel it’s acceptable to talk down to them in public. A few examples of staff shortages; one member of staff is responsible for 30+ breakfast tables, clearing tables, serving coffee etc. Guests either have to wait 20mins for coffee or help themselves. This was the same at 7am or 9am. Room was cleaned each day but floor never was mopped, so we had to wear white slippers which got very dirty. Reception staff also work hard and efficient but we called them on 6 occasions for a wake-up call only received 3! Staff often hang phone up when we speak English. No security on site but this may not be a problem but seems other hotels have security and perimeter gates locked. Entertainment is very repetitive no shows throughout our week but friendly team.

Hotel's Favorite
Recently returned from two fantastic weeks here with my wife and daughter Room wise, we were upgraded to a bungalow garden view which led to use of one of the recently developed private pools. This was a very welcome bonus as the main pools got very busy particularly in our second week. Private pools were rarely busy and usually comfortable to take sunbeds at any time in the day. There are a few private pools in the complex with signs up advising what rooms are allocated to use the private pools. Accommodation in general was fine, not over big (not a big deal to me as we work on the basis we are not in the room for long outside of sleep and getting ready to go out) excellent air conditioning. Shower only, which suits us fine, had small problem with water overflow which was quickly fixed by support staff. Maid staff were in every day and the bungalow was well kept throughout our stay. Larger pools were fine, plenty of room, first week no issue with sunbeds at all, second week definitely busier so you did need to be up earlier. Complex has a gym which I used regularly, nice size and depending on time of the day (I used to go 11ish) never busy, treadmills, cross trainer, weights etc., standard gym on the whole. One thing I would say is the gym ideally should be open earlier (i.e. 8am rather than 10am) would then give a chance for guests to use prior to breakfast. Played a bit of tennis, - nice cement type surface (you can use clay courts up the road at sister hotel) but be warned I think 20eur with no return is excessive to have to pay, if you use need to hire balls and racquets from reception. Food, from my perspective, was standard all-inclusive fayre. No issues at all for us breakfast / lunch, plenty of options. Lunchtimes did get very busy, so we tended to go a bit later – think staff wise the hotel were a little light at times. As per previous all-inclusive for us, I think the dinners are a bit samey and tend to have a little bit of a meat-market feel. All edible stuff, but I think a few more theme nights would be good. You are given the option of using three other restaurants, just the once, which need to be booked with guest assistance desk next to reception. These are classed as à la carte but you are not allowed to select from the main menu (unless you want to pay) rather you are given the set menu options. I actually think this is very poor. If you are only allowed to use these restaurants once then surely the option of the main menu should be allowed? The restaurant stored away with in the villa complex was very nice, beautiful settings and views and fortunately the set menu options, though limited, met our approval. I could not say the same on the beachside restaurant lunch option you are offered. The set menu option is appalling, literally next to nothing. The staff there, once they knew we were all-inclusive for the lunch, had zero interest in us at all, only interested in the paying customers. We were put on a table right out of the way with no view of the beach / sea etc. We decided to leave and go back to the standard buffet restaurant. The other option for à la carte was back at the beachside restaurant for a b-b-q type evening. This was excellent, brilliant options of food with some nice live music in the background. Waiter service for drinks here was also first-class. There was one other à la carte restaurant, next to the lunch snack bar, but unfortunately we could not use this as we had used our three options already. The two bars open in the evening were generally well tended and rarely did we need to wait long for our drinks. You could queue for drinks or find seats for waiter service. Entertainment wise – I could not fault any of the Animation team, they were fantastic! Of course its part of their job to try and get as many people involved in the activities as they can, but not once did they overstep the mark- if you wanted to be involved fine, if not, not a problem. I must give special mention to Martina, Marcos & Ri. We used to play Botcha most mornings down near the beach, which was always a good laugh (and quite competitive) – Marcos & Ri always up for a laugh and great banter. These two made a special effort to involve everyone. Martina was superb at the Water Aerobics (with Barbara) always making sure everyone was actively involved and importantly making it very enjoyable. Martina, and the rest of the team in general were always to be seen with a smile on faces, happy to talk to anyone. The shows the team put on were hit and miss. Never really bought into the idea of a comedy show as you are always trying to make so many different nationalities laugh. Other shows though were more successful, music quiz was a good laugh and the shows involving the team dancing and singing (well miming!) were more successful and enjoyable to watch. The shows are put on a little amphitheatre which the team helped to build – it’s a great set-up. As mentioned the main evening meals did get a bit monotonous so we did have a few nights out. New town Hersonissos was ok, we found a lovely restaurant (Palmera seaside), nice setting with great food. Town was very busy with youngsters, has its own strip with loads of bars. Old town Hersonissos we preferred, notably due to a lovely restaurant, Zachos. We went there twice – in summary, fantastic setting and atmosphere. Excellent menu, loads of options and food was delicious. Staff couldn’t do enough for you, bringing out shots / bottles of wine on the house. Absolutely loved this place, even had a sing-song with an accordion player on our second visit. Cannot recommend this place enough, and it isn’t over expensive either. Cabs, (which we found to be very hit and miss in terms of trying to get one at a given time from the hotel reception) cost 10eur to new town, 15eur to old town. I am not normally bothered with beaches, but this was different here due to a constant breeze. It was perfect to sit and lay in the sun with a breeze hitting you all day. The beach was never over busy either. In general, this was a fantastic holiday and I would recommend this hotel. It’s not a five star but most Greek hotels who state five star rarely meet that. It’s a beautiful setting and the large complex is in the main kept immaculately. Staff and animation team were rarely seen without a smile on their face and always good for a chat. Met some great people also which always add to the fun and games! This is certainly a hotel I would consider returning to in the future.

We went to this hotel 3 weeks ago & it is the best we have ever stayed in. Arrived late at night so the view from our balcony was a lovely surprise in the morning - we had a room with sea view & it was amazing ( up early to catch the sunrise & it was worth it). The whole complex is immaculate, it's so well organised keeping it all so clean. We were taken to & from our room in a golf buggy so no heaving cases anywhere. Our room was spacious enough with a large balcony & a modern bathroom with large walk in shower. Towels changed regularly & the room kept clean, hats off to the maids. We loved the food on offer & I wouldn't say it was monotonous at all. All inclusive you're given the choice to eat in 3 different restaurants on 3 nights, as well as the main restaurant in which there was plenty of choice. The Greek restaurant was our favourite. Drinks are all table service including at breakfast, which I didn't realise on our first morning when I went to get my own tea. The staff are so pleasant & polite when they have so many people to serve. We were here the first week of May so always plenty of sunbeds - not sure what it would be like in peak season. The sea at the hotel's own beach can be a little rough, but we walked to Hersonnisos twice & discovered some beautiful bays where the sea was calm. Also found a lovely little taverna right on the sea where we stopped for drinks on our way back to the hotel. This was out first time to Crete & we'd love to go back to this hotel. Greek people are by far the nicest nationality we've ever met. The pools are salt water so kinder to the environment but they're not heated so are cold. Thank you so much to all the staff, they all work so hard. Special thank you to George at the pool bar who kept me topped up with wine bottles. If I had a tip for anyone, it would be do not pay for any trips with TUI when you're there with euros - they know how to make money that way! Either book before you go or pay by card when you're there. Clare the rep is very knowledgeable, although we only saw her to book a trip. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel - it's beautiful! Thank you so much to all the staff for making our holiday the best yet!

We wanted a wonderful relaxing holiday in very traditional Cretan surroundings. This is what we got, we arrived at night so didn’t see much but the staff were very welcoming and a golf buggy drove us round to our room. The room was comfortable and clean with all the expected amenities, there was also a vase of fresh flowers, a bottle of wine and some tortillas to welcome us. We were booked in a seafront shared pool room and the views were spectacular. Around the pool area there were plenty of comfortable sun loungers and the cleaning staff kept it spotless. The pool bar was at the other side of the pool and the young barman was exceptional, always smiling and laughing with the customers whilst doing his Tom Cruise cocktail shaking. There are 4 gourmet restaurants all different but the food was absolutely amazing at each one, it was hard to choose a favourite but we did like Rizes, the staff were equally amazing, very helpful and friendly. We mainly had breakfast in the gourmet restaurant called Fontana Amorosa, a pretty timber building on stilts over the water, the views of the bay were amazing, the food and the staff again were great, lovely Maria would serve us with a smile every day. The main restaurant was self service, as was the lunch snack bar, the food was excellent in there too and the staff worked hard to make sure it was an enjoyable experience, one of the staff Aphrodite especially, always had something nice to say. The whole complex is very pretty with well tended gardens and beautiful tiled walkways, always maintained. There’s plenty to do for young families, little park areas and pool areas for youngsters. There’s mini golf, an arcade with games machines, pool tables and air hockey. The animation team are great especially Emma a lovely girl, if you fancy joining in there’s always something to do. They put on shows in the amphitheater, we only caught one unfortunately because they started there shows towards the end of May. There was always something on in the main bar though, singers, saxophonists etc. There’s a quaint little bar called Kafeino, typically Cretan very pretty. It opens at 5.30 so it was nice to drop in before or after dinner. It has spectacular views over the bay. There are plenty little shops to browse through too. There is a wellness centre offering a lot of beauty and massage services, a gym and an indoor pool which is 26 degrees! The sea is crystal clear, there are lots of rocks and boulders in places but there are flat sandy areas where you can swim or paddle and there are plenty sun beds on the beach. It’s a scenic walk down to Hersonossis along the sea path where there are lots of bars and shops. Last but not least guest services were second to none especially Illias and the two ladies nothing was too much trouble, always smiling and ready to help, they even arranged our trips out. All in all a wonderful holiday with very happy memories, we will definitely be back…

Just back from a week at this hotel complex. It is in a stunning location and the complex is kept immaculate. We had a bungalow with sea view and it was amazing to have such wonderful views to wake up to every morning. If you are looking to chill out then would highly recommend. We were a minute from the pools and the beach. We walked into Hersonisos one day (about 25 minutes walk ), but felt Hersonisos was too busy and not that nice, although some nice trendy bars. We.were happy to get back to the tranquility of our hotel. The food in the hotel is good with a wide range to food to choose from. The desserts are heavenly. Have to give a special mention to "our good friend" Theo in the main restaurant. He looked after us so well. Big thanks to him. All the staff in general were polite and attentive. Had a terrific time here and sad to leave this gem.

We recently returned from spending 10 nights in the Aldemar Knossos Royal. This was our second time visiting after getting married at this wonderful resort the year before. Having travelled to many countries and stayed in various resorts across the world, from experience the Cretan hospitality is unmatched. The hotel staff are fantastic people with great attentive personalities. Ilias and Alex deserve a mention, they will both go the extra mile to make your stay special. The resort itself continues to be exceptionally clean and well maintained - from the rooms, pools and to the gardening. Food within the establishment is of a top quality and always consistent. Various cuisines are on offer which are available at several gourmet restaurants. The traditional Greek is highly recommended. Entertainment was provided in several forms. The main bar had a different performer on every night and for the kids they have staff on during the day who host different games and activities. Overall, the Aldemar Knossos Royal is a beautiful, warm and welcoming resort which will not disappoint anyone who chooses to visit here. Highly recommend.

There’s a lot to love about the Knossos Royal - it’s beautiful & the gardens & pools are fabulous & so well maintained. The beds are so comfy (even have duvets), the air con is great, our room was kept super clean, the food is fab, the sea view from the terrace & buffet bar is a 180 degree panorama & just wonderful. The main beach is fine pebbled, a little steep & the sea quite rough when we were there (gorgeous to look at or for a paddle), but there’s also a beautiful, calm little turquoise sandy bay 5 mins walk from the front of the hotel (tho a bit steep to get to for anyone with mobility issues). The cleaning ladies & the waiting staff work their socks off, & I particularly loved Stella who worked the buffet breakfast & dinners, who was so kind & warm & really couldn’t do enough for us. Irina (public relations) was also fabulous. However, ask my daughter & she would say the best thing about Knossos Royal is the kids’ club, in particular Christina & Bea. Both Christina & Bea are wonderful - so warm, fun, caring & hard working. I loved chatting with them, but my daughter started sending me outside so she could have them to herself 😂 Christina gave me some fabulous advice about sightseeing, & is studying to develop her expertise working with children further. She clearly loves working with children - & is skilled at it - & my daughter adored her. There are lots of art & craft activities at kids’ club as well as games, some playground equipment & a large paddling pool - all of which my daughter loved. Must say as well that the whole entertainment team work very hard. Thanks to everyone for a lovely holiday.

We had a lovely visit! After arriving late in the evening we were pleased to see a clean, well presented room and food in the fridge! Overall we were super happy with the food and drink, all of the a La carte restaurants were exceptionally good. Lots of cocktails on offer on the AI package and so much entertainment going on throughout the day! Irina on the Guest relations desk was wonderful, sorted a small issue we had very quickly. A 25-40 minute walk along to Hersonissos, but scenic. Just a couple of areas where I feel this hotel could improve. More staff, a lot of the staff in the restaurant and bar areas were worked to the bone, therefore the service was slow at times.

Second time we have visited and we can’t fault anything, staff friendly, food lovely and plenty of choice and waitor odesye remembered our names from last year, we even brought the extended family back this time. Would definitely recommend, ideal for couples, families and it’s quiet enough for business. The hotel beach is the best I’ve known, it’s well organised and not overcrowded like many other hotels we passed by. Taxis are only €10 to hersonnisis Which is lovely for shops, bars and restaurants. It’s a lovely walk ( approx 1 mile ) along the coast. Rooms : We equipped and have own fridge. We have stayed in a bungalow sea view room and also the royal villas and found the standards very good. Kettle and tea/coffee, hairdryers, shampoo and shower gel all complimentary. They provide beach - pool towels also. Highly recommend, lovely place to stay and worth going!

I recognise some of the things other reviewers have commented on in respect to the Aldemar Knossoss. The food in the main restaurant, particularly the meat was from cheaper cuts for example the bacon at breakfast was processed spam type. Other cuts served at lunch / dinner were Pork Belly, Chicken thigh, Beef, Lamb casserole and Veal Leg. There was always fish and vegetarian options available. The deserts were always very good and credit to the desert staff. The hot menu was in the main repetitive and whilst I always had a choice of something to eat it was definitely not 5 star but nearer 3 star. Lunch was not served in the main dining room but the self service snack bar / Restaurant, not the most pleasant of spaces. In common with most large hotels I've stayed in some of the waiters have a technique of avoiding eye contact and interaction. They seem to do a lot of walking and looking busy but make no progress. The result is tables are not reset quickly, drinks are rationed by virtue of you can't get one! And when you clear the table and get your own knifes and forks, the staff get annoyed. Not what you expect from 5* all inclusive! There were two waitresses who were excellent; attentive, efficient and hardworking. I won't name any individuals but when you find them you will know. The A La Carte restaurants were of a good standard although I agree with the comment that the menu available to half board guests should be available to all inclusive guests even if this is at additional cost. The pool bars closed at 5:30 leaving just the main bar. This was disappointing as when busy the main bar did not have sufficient staff. We had booked a double bungalow with a sharing pool. We had expected that this room would be on the ground floor with the pool accessible from the room patio. This was not the case as our room was a first floor room. As there are the same number of first floor rooms as ground floor rooms then there is a 50% chance you will be on the 1st floor. I'm not sure what the 'Double' or 'Bungalow' referred to as the room was a standard size room in a 2 story building with a very small balcony, 1.3m x 1.8m. Even though our room overlooked a sharing pool we did not have access to this particular pool, instead our shared pool was at the other side of the next block. I'm glad we booked the shared pool as in the second week of our stay the main pools became quite busy. We had no problems getting a sunbed around the sharing pool we were designated. All of the pools seem unnecessarily deep. The main pool is from 1.5 meters to 3 meters. Other pools (including sharing pools) seem to be 1.5 meters deep. I did not notice any indication of the depth of our pool although it was at least 1.5m minimum. Not the best if your a non swimmer or not confident in water of this depth. The hotel grounds are on a hillside and are split into 3 tiers with steps between each tier. Non of the accommodation is on the same tier as the main dining room or reception which has two flights of steps from the accommodation. It is possible to access the hotel reception without use of the steps but this involves using a service road to the side of the grounds and is quite a long way around. On the last day we did discover that the hotel provides golf cart transport to the rooms from reception. Not sure if you can request transport from your room to reception but I assume so. The size of the grounds necessitates the use of golf carts, small service vehicles and scooters. Whilst I understand the need for these I did note that on occasions these vehicles were driven faster that was appropriate or whilst using a mobile phone. I also saw these service vehicles reversing with no clearview of what was behind. Given there are guests and children (who may runout from a pathway) present I think the hotel needs to ensure all staff driving these vehicles restrict their speed, pay full attention and do not reverse without a second member of staff watching out at the back. I would appeal to the hotel management to look at this matter seriously and put some control measures in place. The last thing anyone wants is an accident involving one of these vehicles and a guest, particularly a child. Our accomodation was clean, light and modern, we found the beds comfortable and long. The grounds are very pleasant and well maintained. Overall we had an enjoyable relaxing holiday and would not rule out staying at this hotel again sometime in the future. We looked at other 5 star hotels on the same dates some of which which were more expensive. I think the hotel was good value for money but I think there are some areas which could be improved at little to no cost and greatly increase the guest experience.
