My husband and I recently traveled to Cleveland so I could be evaluated for a surgery there, and we picked the J Palen House. It was fantastic. What really stands out to me is that when we arrived Cleveland had a lot of snow, but the b&b made it a point to shovel out a space for us and put cones down so no one would take our spot. I was just really impressed with the foresight and thoughtfulness to do that for us.
There was a plumbing issue with our original room, so they upgraded us to the Palen room. The plumbing issue was actually fixed before we arrived, but they still let us stay in the Palen room. It was lovely. The bed was amazing, I never wanted to leave the tub, the fireplace was cozy, and the food was delicious. We had the whole building to ourselves, which was so nice.
The one thing to look out for is that our room was on the second floor, and the stairs were quite steep-and the only bathroom we could use was on the second floor. It wasn't a problem for us, but it is something to keep in mind if you have severe mobility issues. However, as there are other rooms that don't require stairs, I wouldn't see it as a deal breaker for anyone staying. I'm sure all of the rooms are wonderful to stay in.
We'll actually be traveling to Cleveland again soon for my surgery, so we'll probably stay at the Palen House again then.

Second visit with this property, this time in their adorable and private The Roost detached space. Our first venture in 18 months was terrific. We opted for the Roost because relatives had stayed and loved it, and we liked the idea of totally contactless accommodations while still getting pampered. Diane, the peerless host, had a beautiful breakfast set up in the fridge for us, with instructions for heating, along with complementary snacks and beverages. The Roost is so comfy! Deluxe quality king bedding, totally quiet and private, with a pretty courtyard. Decorated tasteful country style. Ohio City is our fave neighborhood, with restaurants, brewery, and West Side Market right there. Next time we'll stay 2 nights. Thanks, Diane!

My friend and I stayed in "The Barn" property of the J. Palen House B&B while on a short trip to Cleveland. There was touchless check-in and the innkeeper graciously left us a delicious breakfast to heat and enjoy. There was a lovely, well equipped kitchen and a sitting room, which was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Our bedrooms were upstairs. They both had a king size bed, spacious bathroom with a jacuzzi and a sitting area. My room "The Retreat" even had a fireplace. Everything was sparkling clean. You could tell that attention was paid to every detail. "The Barn" was beautiful and festive both inside and out. I was so impressed and would definitely recommend this property in charming Ohio City.

My husband and I stayed in "The Cottage" for 3 nights and were very pleased. The location was perfect for us, close to bars and restaurants as well as public transportation since we didn't have a car. The train and bus were close by when we wanted to go across town and otherwise we were able to easily walk everywhere.
The Cottage was clean, comfortable and very well furnished and stocked. Being in a separate building and self catering, it was like an Airbnb as we never met Diane the innkeeper or any of the other guests. The main B&B was full, next time we'll try to stay there as we missed the social contact that comes with a B&B stay. That being said, Diane was very friendly and helpful on the phone, and the breakfasts left for us each day were tasty and came with detailed heating instructions. We would highly recommend J. Palen House.

The Roost was a great place to spend our 40th anniversary. The owners had very nice touches, the table was set with fresh flowers, cookies and candy in the kitchen. We used the courtyard to sit and relax. Two floors, fireplace, just had everything. The place is very close to breweries and restaurants. They steered us towards Lucas for dinner, which was fantastic. We also went to Glass Bubble Project (which we had reservations for) the next day. It was a great getaway place. My husband was talking about the next time we go already as soon as we got there.

We stayed at J. Palen House Bed and Breakfast for 5 nights while visiting family and friends in Cleveland OH. The Bed and Breakfast is excellent, with extremely comfortable beds, great breakfast and lovely hosts. Doug helped us with our luggage, ensured that we had parking on the street, and offered to drive us if we needed to get somewhere other than where we had planned. Diane, one of the hosts solved an airline reservation problem that we had for our departure flight and this saved us a lot of time, trouble, and worry about how to fix the problem.
Overall, it was a great experience.

Made a visit to Cleveland on Wednesday to deliver gifts to family. Due to the pandemic, my friend and I stayed at a J Palen property referred to as “The Barn”- a one-time stable now luxuriously converted into two-story units for either short or long term visits. As with all J Palen properties, Diane has decorated this with beautiful, primitive, authentic, decor. To boot, each rental property has been beautifully adorned with fresh greens and decorations for the holiday season. As per the pandemic recommendations, we were welcomed with a touchless entry, and our breakfast (a delicious homemade frittata, yogurt parfait, juice) was waiting for us in the fridge with exact directions for morning preparation since we couldn’t gather around a community breakfast table. Thank you, Diane, for everything and more. The words “repeat customer” ( that’s me) say more than any review could do the J Palen House justice. Merry Christmas!

My husband and I rode the Ohio To Erie Trail from Cincinnati To Cleveland and were graciously welcomed in, bicycles and all, to this beautiful, lavish, established Bed and Breakfast. Diane made us feel very at home and served us a wonderful breakfast while conversing and getting to know each other. She provided lots of information about what was in the area as far as food/drink so that we could choose where to have dinner when we arrived. I would definitely recommend this place and would stay again myself.

JPalen House is an exceptional property in Cleveland. Its location in Ohio City among other beautifully restored homes was perfect for all our activities. No detail is overlooked here. We were two couples traveling together and we shared the 2-bedroom accommodation. Each is a master king bedded suite separated by a small atrium and balcony that share a spacious gathering and dining space as well as a full kitchen. The breakfasts included in our stay were amazing and everything was homemade...delicious! We love the B&B experience and JPalen House is one of the best we've found in our travels.

A last minute reservation became a surprisingly wonderful stay, in every regard. We relished our “Retreat” room, sunken tub, private garden space in bloom, and freshly baked oatmeal cookies bedside. We capped off our overnight experience with a beautifully presented 3 course breakfast in the main building, served by such professional, personable staff. It could not have been better!

A Washington Post Article, called the J. Palen House "Serendipity" and a reason to come to Cleveland.
At this time we have rooms available for your dates. Our rates range from 179.00-209.00 per night plus tax for rooms at the Inn depending on your choice of rooms. Our private residences are $269.00 per night plus tax and are self catering. We offer a complimentary three course breakfast with rooms at the Inn.
