I travelled to St George from Brisbane and return with Murray’s Coaches and my choice of accommodation was the Merino Motor Inn – with its fantastic location so close to the town centre and just across the road, diagonally, from the Scott Street Bus Stop where Murray’s Coaches stop.
I had occasion to stay in this motel in 2015 on another short visit to St George and this later visit proved to be as good as my first experience.
The motel offers a nice room with comfortable bed, an occasional table with two chairs, a simple lounge chair, microwave oven, toaster and small refrigerator – the usual items expected in a motel. There is a set of shelving to place one’s luggage on and a small wardrobe with sufficient hanging space and an ironing board and iron provided.
The bathroom is basic but adequate with vanity, toilet and shower recess and was clean on arrival and the water was hot!
The motel offers just a continental breakfast (toast, jam, cereal, fruit juice) which is basic but met my needs. Travellers expecting to get a cooked breakfast need to note this point.
The establishment has an excellent restaurant by all accounts – however, my stay was too short to be able to enjoy a dinner meal here.
There is a small fenced in swimming pool, which I did not use and a nice covered break out area with tables and chairs adjacent to the pool to enjoy some relaxation.
Throughout my stay the owner Tamlyn made sure I was well looked after. Her friendly approach was appreciated since I was a stranger in a strange town and travelling solo.
The complex has quite a number of motel units, some larger than others offering slightly better facilities with all the units located on either side of a large concrete courtyard which enables cars to drive up to each unit easily with sufficient space to turn a vehicle around if necessary.
As motels go the Merino proved to be a good choice on my part for my accommodation. It’s not luxury but it was comfortable and convenient and I would recommend it to travellers looking for a place to rest en route on their long outback journeys.
Our only negative is that the pool was not clean. Water quality was ok but it was full of debris from the surrounding palm trees. Had to use their leaf catcher to remove the surface debris and the rest of the rubbish from the bottom of the pool before we could go for a swim. It just needed a bit of attention.
A hand railing on the pool edge is absolutely necessary to assist the elderly to enter and get out our of the water.

We dined in the restaurant on site, and it was delicious. We both had the Chefs Rib Eye steak & it was cooked to perfection.
Looking forward to staying again in the future. Absolute highlight to the trip.

We ate in the restaurant - first night because it was raining so easier, both had good meals - Popeye Chicken, this was very large! and Crumbed lamb chops, bit dark but good. Second night we ate there again as there was no where else in town - Again lamb chops, and grilled Barra. Again good meals, excellent staff in restaurant.
The pool was okay, but could do with some furniture to make it more inviting.
Unfortunately our stay was spoilt by the rude reception we received on arrival. We were early, about 11.30am, and only wanted to leave our car there so we could walk around town, spend some money and have some lunch. Janine, the owner/manager told us we were far too early and to come back about pm. No "Hello" or any other type of friendly greeting.
We will not be back!
