In November 2024 I enjoyed a two night stay in St George, 520 kilometres south-west of Brisbane so that I could present a special award to a St George State High School year 12 student at the School’s Awards Presentation Night.

I travelled to St George from Brisbane and return with Murray’s Coaches and my choice of accommodation was the Merino Motor Inn – with its fantastic location so close to the town centre and just across the road, diagonally, from the Scott Street Bus Stop where Murray’s Coaches stop.

I had occasion to stay in this motel in 2015 on another short visit to St George and this later visit proved to be as good as my first experience.

The motel offers a nice room with comfortable bed, an occasional table with two chairs, a simple lounge chair, microwave oven, toaster and small refrigerator – the usual items expected in a motel. There is a set of shelving to place one’s luggage on and a small wardrobe with sufficient hanging space and an ironing board and iron provided.

The bathroom is basic but adequate with vanity, toilet and shower recess and was clean on arrival and the water was hot!

The motel offers just a continental breakfast (toast, jam, cereal, fruit juice) which is basic but met my needs. Travellers expecting to get a cooked breakfast need to note this point.

The establishment has an excellent restaurant by all accounts – however, my stay was too short to be able to enjoy a dinner meal here.

There is a small fenced in swimming pool, which I did not use and a nice covered break out area with tables and chairs adjacent to the pool to enjoy some relaxation.

Throughout my stay the owner Tamlyn made sure I was well looked after. Her friendly approach was appreciated since I was a stranger in a strange town and travelling solo.

The complex has quite a number of motel units, some larger than others offering slightly better facilities with all the units located on either side of a large concrete courtyard which enables cars to drive up to each unit easily with sufficient space to turn a vehicle around if necessary.

As motels go the Merino proved to be a good choice on my part for my accommodation. It’s not luxury but it was comfortable and convenient and I would recommend it to travellers looking for a place to rest en route on their long outback journeys.

Clean neat and tidy rooms. Friendly greeting. The restaurant was fantastic, with great meals and reasonable prices. Friendly atmosphere.
Our only negative is that the pool was not clean. Water quality was ok but it was full of debris from the surrounding palm trees. Had to use their leaf catcher to remove the surface debris and the rest of the rubbish from the bottom of the pool before we could go for a swim. It just needed a bit of attention.
A hand railing on the pool edge is absolutely necessary to assist the elderly to enter and get out our of the water.

Perfect accommodation for a recent work trip. While the room has an 1980s sensibility, the thoughtful updates make it perfect for the traveller: Queen bed, TV, microwave, toaster, kettle and ample power points for charging and newly renovated shower. The daily service of new towels was an added bonus but should be optional with the state of the drought. Dinner in the restaurants boasts a menu to have you dining out for every night of your stay. Two small supermarkets a 2 minute stroll away will serve those on a budget for food and things you left at home.

I stayed at the Merino Motor Inn in May 2021 on a work trip and it has all the usual comforts on a rural good quality place to stay. The managers are friendly and helpful and the room itself was good. In the spirit of helpful advice might I suggest the weather strip be replaced at the bottom of the door to avoid any creepy crawlies from enjoying the space - also a wipe down was in order on tops of cabinets etc. Overall though a good standard.

Just stopped in overnight while travelling for work. The rooms are comfortable, bathrooms are modern, and nothing is too hard for the management. Little touches like the modern recliner rocking chairs in our room so there was somewhere to put your feet up after driving all day that’s not just the bed, or that the aircon was on when we arrived so the room was cool (was a 40 degree day) was absolutely lovely & well thought out.
We dined in the restaurant on site, and it was delicious. We both had the Chefs Rib Eye steak & it was cooked to perfection.

Looking forward to staying again in the future. Absolute highlight to the trip.

Great place to stay, friendly team and helpful. Room was clean, tidy and comfortable. Close to the main centre of town, within walking distance from motel. Restaurant onsite is popular and need to book in early, great alternative is room service if you prefer.

We were her for only 2 nights; the reception was very friendly and teh room was clean and comfortable.
We ate in the restaurant - first night because it was raining so easier, both had good meals - Popeye Chicken, this was very large! and Crumbed lamb chops, bit dark but good. Second night we ate there again as there was no where else in town - Again lamb chops, and grilled Barra. Again good meals, excellent staff in restaurant.
The pool was okay, but could do with some furniture to make it more inviting.

rooms are good, well positioned in town. wont stay there again . rude reception , some of our group sitting on chairs out front of rooms were told off, as the chair was against the wall. next morning breakfast took 1 1/2 hrs to come after the order was taken (2 tables, 6 people). then we were asked to re-order twice more as there was an issue in the kitchen. waitress apologised for the delay. the "chief" just abused us and tried to make it our fault our meals took so long

Our family stayed in St George for one night. We booked a family room which was clean and tidy. The booking and check in process was simple and the owner was polite and helpful. The motel was fully booked due to a number of functions in town and we found that the room was quiet and we didn’t notice the comings and going’s of other guests. We will defiantly stay again next time we are in St George.

The Merino is a good motel, located close to shops, cafes and pubs. Our room was large, modern, well decorated and very comfortable. Parking is at the door and there is a pool, and licenced restaurant.
Unfortunately our stay was spoilt by the rude reception we received on arrival. We were early, about 11.30am, and only wanted to leave our car there so we could walk around town, spend some money and have some lunch. Janine, the owner/manager told us we were far too early and to come back about pm. No "Hello" or any other type of friendly greeting.
We will not be back!
