We'd tried this place before and hadn't been overly impressed, however thought we'd give it a another try. It was the Valentine's event. Oh dear. While the food on the limited menu was good no attempt had been made to create any sort of special ambience, there were just the everyday plain scrubbed tables. The lad who brought our wine just plonked down the ice bucket and had no idea that he should have shown us the bottle to confirm it was the right wine, opened it and poured out some to try. The wine glasses were still warm from the dish-washer. The menu was limited and pricier than usual. After the meals arrived we weren't offered the pepper mill or grated parmesan and nobody came to ask if everything was satisfactory. After the main course we'd expected to be shown a dessert menu but after 30 minutes this hadn't happened so we asked for the bill. This too failed to arrive so after a further 15 minutes we went to the bar to pay. The lad who'd brought the wine and whom we'd asked for the bill was standing behind the bar doing nothing. There was no management in evidence and the very young staff must have had only minimal training. No wonder that the pace was only two-thirds full. We won't be going there again and we advise others not to go there either.

Good combination of freshly prepared Italian cooking with confortable bedroom and large bathroom (separate bath and shower- a nice touch). The bar area has a real fire and armchairs - a good place to spend some time. My wider family including veggies ate with me and all were happy. Owner and staff friendly and helpful- I was offered a lift to the station without asking. Nice.

This place is receiving food reviews on the hotel trip advisor and vice versa. We ate here on Friday night as the new 'chain' restaurant in the town was fully booked. Fantinos was our favourite place to eat in Thirsk but we haven't had a nice meal there since Sean was in house.. Every few months we will give it another go, but its never been as good. Two visits ago the drinks bill with service charge was more than the food. However as i said we gave it one more go. We ordered a garlic bread with cheese (well done), tuna pizza and a carbonara. The waitress came over with a garlic bread and offered it to us to eat whilst the correct one was cooked. we both had a bit of a slice each and both of us said that it wasn't cooked. The dough seemed to me like it had been prepared well in advance and maybe refrigerated, and gone tough. the dough was a curious dense grey colour in the centre and no where as thin as previous visits. I am by no means a candidate for the bake off but being a keen baker have experienced this myself with pastry. When our correct garlic bread came it was slightly better, but much the same. I pointed this out to the waitress and mentioned that i had ordered pizza and hoped this wasn't going to be the same. She assured me that it wouldn't. Our main courses came and the pizza was the best of the 3 but still not great. we'd asked for this one to be extra thin and crispy having suffered the previous 2 attempts so i only ate the topping and the middle. The Carbonara was the strangest taste and colour. It was just the colour of the broccoli flavour pasta 'n' sauce. we brought it to the attention of the waitress that it didn't taste of carbonara to which she replied ' what should carbonara taste like it taste like'. The photo attached is what was left. She came back from the kitchen with a message from the chef that in Italy they don't use cream and only use egg. With the 'budget chain' restaurants opening up in the town, Fantinos really need to reevaluate a lot of factors if they expect to keep trade and avoid people being disappointment.

Stayed and had dinner at this characterful restaurant with rooms. Our 'Alfa Romeo' room was large, quiet and comfortable with large bathroom. Good quality Italian food in restaurant for dinner, and for breakfast. All staff were pleasant, competent, and helpful. Bathroom had minor maintenance problems of the cosmetic type.

Overall nice place. Food was good and ample portions. Breakfast had little choice though only cereal available was cornflakes or porridge. Poor tasting sausages with a full English (minus the beans) And had to ask for milk, for butter, for marmalade and jam. We also had issues when we asked for an iron at 9am , then 9.30am when it still hadn't been sent to our room then again at 10.20am when we asked for it again each time being informed it was on it's way from house keeping (obviously house keeping were coming from Carlisle !,,,) we eventually received the iron and board at 10.40am .we were off to a wedding so really did need the iron. Be prepared for a wait to check out too, we waited 20mins to do that after actually ringing the hotel landline 4x to get someone to see to our departure. We stayed during christmas and new year on 27th Dec so recognise that staff may have been thin on the ground., but this did put a dampener on the experience 5his time , we had stayed before with service being much better.

I'm grateful for you takin g the time to review, of course I'm sorry our service was not up to the usual standard. Sadly we were a little thin on the ground in between Christmas and New Year but that should not have affected your stay. We hope to see you again.
