We stayed here for 4 nights for my birthday. The owners were lovely, and the staff - with the exception of the head chef who gets a special lengthy mention later! The breakfasts and dinners were good, whilst dinner was not cheap there was plenty of good quality food. The ale is excellent, brewed I believe by the man himself... More

This was by far the best ever carvery we have been too, first time visit and certainly won't be the last! The food was fresh and hot and served by the chef who you could see took a lot of pride in his food and very happy in his work. Lots of choice of veg and loads of meat, so... More

The food was great, the service appalling! Dirty tables, staff could not give a toss! Chewing gum, not at all helpful, except the chef! No explanation of how the car very system worked, paid eventually at the bar, given a receipt, when we went to get our food we were asked for a raffle ticket, we weren't given any when... More

Now then....we got there just after 12 for the Sunday Carvery, staff were very pleasant, we bought drinks and paid for the carvery and were given tickets at the bar. As a party of 7 we had booked and were told to come early, good call from the management because by 1 pm people were queuing! The food was very... More

Called today with my family(4 of us) ordered 3 coffees and a pint of Jaipur very nice, asked for the menu. The older blond haired woman asked if we'd booked I said no, she intimated we could be squeezed in then a younger dark haired women said outright there was no way we were eating they were too busy. This... More

We stayed for two nights for a friends wedding nearby. Some really off reviews on here- come expecting a pub with rooms and not a hotel and you won't be dissapointed!! Our room was clean, fresh crisp bedding, clean hot showers and lovely cooked breakfast with bottomless tea. The staff (especially the owners) are all so lovely - they talk... More

We'd got a family wedding nearby and booked this hotel for 2 nights for a relaxing weekend. I'd done the research and read the reviews and decided that we couldn't go wrong with a four star hotel. We were shown to a poky room with just enough room for a double bed, chest of drawers and a hat stand. Not... More

It's been here since 1528 but we've just found it following a recommendation. 60 mile round trip well worthwhile for excellent Sunday roast. Fascinating building with lots of history. We'll be back to try out the weekday fare.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The earliest reference to a building here is 1528 – this would have been a parlour, hall, buttery, dairy, and kitchen. In 1690, the building became the property of the Hurt family, which then became an alehouse and soon after known as the Olde Brown Bear Inn.  The Bear Inn, as it became known by 1735, lay on the Birmingham-Derby-Chesterfield-Sheffield turnpike road…..by 1764 it had become a prominent coaching Inn. The names and dates of all Innkeepers and owners from 1735 – 2008 is listed in the entrance hall of the Bear. Just standing beneath the beams of this fine English country Inn invites history to wash over you – sampling a pint or two of fine English ale helps the process! The fame of The Bear has spread across various counties and continents in recent years, mainly as a Gastro pub of note, a hotel, carvery & real ale venue. Real Food, Real Ale, Real People, Real Derbyshire – can be completed with Real History. The Bear can truly boast to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest & most renowned Inn & Hotels.  ... more   less
