We'd got a family wedding nearby and booked this hotel for 2 nights for a relaxing weekend. I'd done the research and read the reviews and decided that we couldn't go wrong with a four star hotel. We were shown to a poky room with just enough room for a double bed, chest of drawers and a hat stand. Not... More

It's been here since 1528 but we've just found it following a recommendation. 60 mile round trip well worthwhile for excellent Sunday roast. Fascinating building with lots of history. We'll be back to try out the weekday fare.

We stayed here and paid more due to the fact that it was near Ashbourne. Upon checking in, we left for dinner and came back after dark to go to sleep-the rooms are cheaply decorated and not spacious at all. In the morning, upon getting in the shower, the mold was bad enough, but the water barely dripped out of... More

Great beer garden. Lovely selection of local ales. Prices very good. We spent the afternoon in the beer garden. Staff were all very friendly. The pub had a lot of character, the menu looked lovely. Will be going back for food

I have just been to this quaint little pub for a drink. Having gone out the night before and starting the dirt on Monday we decided to have our last big blow out. And blow out we did, that was one of the best meals we have ever had in the 24 years of being alive. Being a veggie was... More

The Sat nav did not want to find the hotel it kept sending us short of it and telling us to navigate off road!! The hotel is not in Belpher itself but a few miles out. The meat and ale pie special was really nice. The staff were friendly. We had one of their two four poster rooms which was... More

We visited the Bear Inn yesterday for a carvery. What would have been a very enjoyable experience started off very stressful - as mentioned on previous reviews (which I should have read beforehand) the sat nav seems to take you to the middle of nowhere which turned out to be about 15 mins from the restaurant; we ended up ringing... My sons wedding was nearby and he chose The Bear for a meal after getting married in Bakewell. Some guests also stayed here. The staff were very friendly and we had the best carvery we have ever had, excellent meat and a large choice of very fresh and tasty veg. A lovely setting we all sat in garden afterwards enjoying... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The earliest reference to a building here is 1528 – this would have been a parlour, hall, buttery, dairy, and kitchen. In 1690, the building became the property of the Hurt family, which then became an alehouse and soon after known as the Olde Brown Bear Inn.  The Bear Inn, as it became known by 1735, lay on the Birmingham-Derby-Chesterfield-Sheffield turnpike road…..by 1764 it had become a prominent coaching Inn. The names and dates of all Innkeepers and owners from 1735 – 2008 is listed in the entrance hall of the Bear. Just standing beneath the beams of this fine English country Inn invites history to wash over you – sampling a pint or two of fine English ale helps the process! The fame of The Bear has spread across various counties and continents in recent years, mainly as a Gastro pub of note, a hotel, carvery & real ale venue. Real Food, Real Ale, Real People, Real Derbyshire – can be completed with Real History. The Bear can truly boast to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest & most renowned Inn & Hotels.  ... more   less
