We stayed bed and breakfast on Saturday 9th July because we were going to a wedding near by. We stayed in Blossom cottage which was lovely, very basic but everything we needed and clean and tidy. Our breakfast was plentiful and very nicely cooked and served. The thing I have to comment on most is the staff, all the staff... More

We have visited here many times over the years and never had a bad experience. We visited again, having not been for a while and were a little dubious after reading the bad reviews on here. I have to say it didn't disappoint. We had the Brie and fishcake starter and they were delicious. We then followed with two of... More

First time I've been here, if you didn't know it was there you would miss it. The view is amazing and the food was to die for. We booked for 6 of us because it's a quiet little country pub we wanted to make sure we could get in and I'm glad we did. The staff were very helpful and... More

A very nice country inn with comfortable rooms and very pleasant staff. The rooms are quite small but clean and comfortable and it is very much a "country" pub and hotel, with winding stairs and interesting rooms. The food in the restaurant was very good, with a very interesting menu and the breakfast was freshly cooked and substantial. A couple... More

Sunday carvery is amazing. Beef is fantastic which you can have either rare, medium or well done. Great selection all home cooked at an unbeatable price. Try it I am sure you won't be disappointed, however make sure you book beforehand.

Visited for Sunday lunch (carvery only) on Bank Holiday weekend without a booking, but were accommodated. This quite remote 'Coaching style' Inn is so popular they expected to feed 3-400 people over that afternoon. There is one very large Banquet type room, with a small, busy bar and a warren of smaller rooms with atmospheric decor. A single course adult... More

Excellent meal. Go very hungry! They don't scrimp on anything. You can have as much as you want. Plenty of choice. Will be going again. Really friendly staff and very good value. Very popular so book a table to be guaranteed a table.

Great old coaching inn. Quirky in design. Meals are massive and delicious. Need an empty tummy to consume all that is served. Friendly staff and happy to help. Gets very busy! Make sure to book a table

2 friends and myself went to the Bear Inn on Sunday, 29th May as we didn't feel like cooking anything ourselves and wanted some hot food. We rang at about 6.40pm just to check on availability but didn't book a table. The lady I spoke to said as long as we arrived before 7.30pm we would be able to order... More

Four of us booked to go here for Sunday lunch as it had been recommended to us as a great carvery. With us not living close by it took some finding. The sat nav was taking us all over the place. Anyway we got here half an hour late but we phoned to explain we were lost. The Carvery was... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The earliest reference to a building here is 1528 – this would have been a parlour, hall, buttery, dairy, and kitchen. In 1690, the building became the property of the Hurt family, which then became an alehouse and soon after known as the Olde Brown Bear Inn.  The Bear Inn, as it became known by 1735, lay on the Birmingham-Derby-Chesterfield-Sheffield turnpike road…..by 1764 it had become a prominent coaching Inn. The names and dates of all Innkeepers and owners from 1735 – 2008 is listed in the entrance hall of the Bear. Just standing beneath the beams of this fine English country Inn invites history to wash over you – sampling a pint or two of fine English ale helps the process! The fame of The Bear has spread across various counties and continents in recent years, mainly as a Gastro pub of note, a hotel, carvery & real ale venue. Real Food, Real Ale, Real People, Real Derbyshire – can be completed with Real History. The Bear can truly boast to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest & most renowned Inn & Hotels.  ... more   less
