Yes the older part of the pub is olde worlde but for me that adds to the charm - it has been there for hundreds of years at the end of the day. The service wasn't the best but it was fine and good enough. The carvery though was the best I've ever had. I have never seen a meat...

A four mile trip took an age, because the place doesn't exist in Sat-Nav world. However, that and a slightly anarchic food ordering system shouldn't put you off sampling this delight! Food cooked wonderfully. Chef offers joints cooked rare, medium and well-done. A little shy of £14:00 for a three course meal! Will return!

We arrived late after visiting the Midlands railway (yawn) but son and hubby loved it. Staff really friendly and accommodated us on another table. The carvery is impressive, biggest ribs of beef I've ever seen, Turkey, lamb and gammon. Good roasties and Yorkshires and good selection of vegetables. Very busy and clearly popular with the locals. Delicious and huge portion...

8 of us went for Sunday lunch, the food was amazing on the carvery. The meat was beautiful and plentiful. I would definitely recommend Sunday lunch. The place is quirky and some areas of the pub are warmer than others. We sat in the main bar which was lovely however there were seats in the corridor which would be lovely...

We have eaten lunch here a couple of times but oh dear this place is really deteriorating. Our meal was boring, one gammon, one lasagna, tired salad, oven chips and no offer of sauce or dressing. My coffee was tasteless and Luke warm. Won't be returning and for a pub this remote they need to do something about the decor...

I held my wedding reception here many years ago and it was beautiful. I have family over for Christmas and decided to book Christmas lunch here. So I booked a carvery for my family so we could sample the food and pay for Christmas (70.00 per person) thank goodness we did, I was shocked at the rundown appearance of the...

Our friends were staying here so we joined them for dinner - food and service were both brilliant. So good we returned on the Sunday for their carvery - for an establishment miles from anywhere the full car park and constant flow of people in and out is testament in itself. However we didn't feel rushed or cramped and the...

Visited the Bear for Sunday lunch today after having it recommend. We booked a table and arrived in plenty of time. We were told where to sit to find someone already sat there, this then happened again but third time lucky but ended up being sat in the main hall on a table for six. It was loud, cold, and...

Stayed 2 nights at The Bear Inn and Hotel, Alderwasley, 13 and 14 October. The landlady led us to our room which was freezing and felt damp. We asked for the heating to be turned on. She told us that her husband wasn't back from work yet and when he returns he'll turn on the boiler. Later on that evening,...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The earliest reference to a building here is 1528 – this would have been a parlour, hall, buttery, dairy, and kitchen. In 1690, the building became the property of the Hurt family, which then became an alehouse and soon after known as the Olde Brown Bear Inn.  The Bear Inn, as it became known by 1735, lay on the Birmingham-Derby-Chesterfield-Sheffield turnpike road…..by 1764 it had become a prominent coaching Inn. The names and dates of all Innkeepers and owners from 1735 – 2008 is listed in the entrance hall of the Bear. Just standing beneath the beams of this fine English country Inn invites history to wash over you – sampling a pint or two of fine English ale helps the process! The fame of The Bear has spread across various counties and continents in recent years, mainly as a Gastro pub of note, a hotel, carvery & real ale venue. Real Food, Real Ale, Real People, Real Derbyshire – can be completed with Real History. The Bear can truly boast to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest & most renowned Inn & Hotels.  ... more   less
