What a beautiful house! And such a lovely lady host. We (my dad and I) arrived after an appalling day. The weather had been horrendous all day. We had set off from Rosthwaite in the rain and arrived in Shap in the rain. The accommodation was a welcome site and we were not disappointed. A very big room with a... More

We arrived bedraggled and tired after a long day scrambling around Haweswater from Patterdale, to find that out leader had under booked us, but the proprietor Jean fitted us all in AFTER sending us down to the local fish shop for dinner...we froze for an extra hour...not Jean's fault so much as ours for not confirming our party size with... We loved this place! What a unique experience. Everything about our stay was special from arrival to departure. The place is full of character and dates back to the late 1600's. The owners have lovingly filled it all all sorts of antiques and knick-knacks, everywhere you look there is something of interest to catch your eye. Our room was large... More

The Hermitage is an old and beautiful property that almost feels like you are staying at a museum. It is a little nerve wracking coming into this beautiful place with dirty boots and stinky clothes, hauling your luggage (which suddenly feels 20X larger) past all of the art and antiques, but this place should not be missed. Earlier reviews mentioned... More

My partner and I stayed with Jean for one night while walking the Coast to Coast. Everything was lovely from the moment we checked in. Lovely spacious room and ensuite with a bath, breakfast was very tasty and plentiful and Jean the host is a very pleasant lady. We very much enjoyed our stay at The Hermitage.

The Hermitage was a welcome site after a long long day walking most of it in very warm weather. The house is quaint and quirky and our room was a great size with a bath !!! This was very welcome and it was a joy to relax sore legs and feet. The bed very comfy and breakfast was plentiful, hot... More

After a hard 16 miles walking the joy of seeing the Hermitage is much to be desired. The owner was a delight to meet. The house was something out of a film. The room was quaint and extremely clean. The grounds and surrounding areas are amazing. Breakfast was fit for a king with plenty of choice. Sad that it was... More

The Hermitage is a great place to stay on the Coast to Coast. We would definitely recommend it. The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. The breakfast and packed lunch was top quality. The owner, Jean, made us feel very welcome indeed.

This was a tough review to write. The Hermitage is a fantastic property. The room was awesome and had such great character as did the rest of the house. I cannot fault the property one bit. The only slight downside was the host Jean. We were not made to feel as welcome as we were on the previous B&B's on... More

What a lovely place full of old world charm. Lovely comfortable rooms and after a very long days walk, the huge piping hot bath was heaven sent! Very friendly with a lovely breakfast and helpful info on where to eat out nearby
