Stayed with a group of ladies for 3 rounds of golf at Portal. The hotel was good with a nice clean room however we waited nearly an hour for our food! We preferred the Premier course as the championship was a bit long for us but both courses were in very good condition! We had some confusion with our tee times and buggies however Simon and Jordan from the golf shop were excellent in sorting it out for us so we could play earlier and everyone in our group could have a buggy. In all a very pleasant stay with tremendous staff.
It's alright unless you want a drink of Peroni, or IPA, or Becks, or Guinness, or don't want to walk 300 yards to the other side of the hotel where you're eating to the "only functional bar". Very very poor service!!
Stayed overnight for a spa night including bed, breakfast, meal and back massage. Set in lovely grounds with a golf course. Nice big room with large bed, lovely and clean with fridge, tea, coffee and biscuits. Hotel reception staff were friendly and professional. Pool area and changing rooms nice. Spa staff and environment was lovely and had a lovely back massage. Restaurant staff also friendly and professional and although we had £25 per person towards food, the meals are quite expensive for tasty but not extra special meals. There was a large golfing group who were quite loud and used bad language but this was no fault of the staff and hotel. Bar area not staffed well considering a few large groups of golfers so wait for drinks was quite lengthy but again no fault of the bar staff who were doing their best and run off their feet. The positives outweighed the few negatives. Every member of staff worked really hard and were both friendly and professional…
My husband and I were in the area recently for our honeymoon and decided to book in for golf at your beautiful location. We were amazed by the service we received at the pro shop from Jay. He helped keep our day flowing perfectly. He took care of organizing all the amenities needed! He was even nice enough to hold our champagne we had brought in their fridge, and then delivered it to us on the 14th tee along with some chocolates! He really made our day special, thanks again!
Back from a golfing stay with friends. Reception staff were very helpful and friendly and knew of all the various reservations for golf and dinner. There was a general feeling that the hotel was understaffed but Millie, Jack and Ellie in the restaurant deserve a special mention for their friendly and excellent service so too does Morgan in the bar, who despite being short of several key products managed deliver suitable replacements. Seeing some of the negative comments posted is surprising. For me the 4 star rating for the hotel is justified as is a 5 star rating for those members of staff named above.
If you’re a local resident and book a treatment (every now and then) you’re guaranteed to get it moved or cancelled. After the 4th time of being moved because there was an “issue” - really? I’ve had other staff members explain that it’s about the diary and how they schedule it, to then be given an absolute story is pretty poor to say the least. I will never use the spa ever again, I would rather drive to the Mere then 5 minutes up the road. Utterly disappointing especially for a birthday voucher which has been moved twice - by the spa! In 2 weeks. Never again.
Big shout out to Jordan and Jaz who very kindly sorted our transfer from the hotel up to the Premier Course at lunchtime on Thursday - service above and beyond. Well done. Left a few shots out there …!!
If you are a keen golfer, but are a bit down on your uppers at the moment, fear not. Play golf at the Championship Course. Tell the pro shop there are three of you but you want to be able to play with only one set of clubs between you. No problem. Don’t worry about the frustration and resentment of holding up those members playing behind you. Rich moaning wingers - that’ll teach em.
Overall just a real shame and a place where they clearly just don't pay to employ enough staff. The bar service was a shambles with huge numbers of people trying to be served by a single bar person. We were then forced to sit down for large group meals without being able to order drinks from the table and being forced to wait huge amounts of time by which point your food was cold!! I think the staff they had on were all actually really good and were trying to do the best they could in a tough situation but clearly management were at fault and there were just far fewer people than were needed. The room itself was nice enough until I got in the shower and realised the shower head was broken and just leaked water out of the side so regardless of the setting just fell down in a big central clump of water. We were here to play golf and the courses were ok but not amazingly - the whole complex has the possibility of being really something special but they clearly just don't want to spend the money on green keeping staff to make it that and it was distinctly rough around the edges with really tatty tee boxes and fairways and only average greens. The food itself when we got it was ok - nothing special but squally not terrible just big standard pub grub - however beware the extra supplement for the steak if you get a package deal as they don't make that obvious and it's hugely not worth it for a very mediocre steak! Overall would avoid and all of us definitely won't be coming back…
A great venue set in the Cheshire countryside with fantastic views and with a choice of three courses to play, We chose the Championship Course and the Premier Course. The hotel has many first class facilities including a spa with swimming pool, bar and dinning room. The staff in the hotel were very welcoming, professional and engaging. There were four employees who went the extra mile in making our stay special. They are: Ellis Jack Morgan and Davina. We used the bar and tried the lunch menu as well as using the main restaurant for dinner and breakfast. I would strongly recommend the hotel for a midweek or weekend break.
