Having paid £300 a night in advance for room(suite) and breakfast for my husband and myself I expected a high standard of accommodation, food and especially service. Unfortunately, we were bitterly disappointed by all three. The room had a musty smell. The windows were shut because of the air conditioning but it really needed some fresh air. Only 4 hangers in a tiny cubicle. Cracked washbasin. First breakfast we waited over an hour for service. One waitress offered to clear our table as she thought we had been there so long we had finished. I ordered the haddock with poached egg. When it arrived on a large plate, all I saw was the egg. However, when I moved this I found the tiny piece of haddock underneath. Still, we made up for the lack of food on the plate by eating the cold rubbery toast. Dinner was a disaster. We sat in the bar area on our own and ordered a drink. It took over half an hour before it arrived. We then went outside to eat as it was a hot evening. We ordered another drink and a carafe of iced water. The food arrived an hour later and the wine and warm water arrived after we finished our meal. My plate also contained a hair. I would normally have sent it back but couldn't face another long wait. The next evening was even worse. They have a bar menu and a restaurant menu. As we were outside we were given both to look at. I ordered from the bar menu and my husband from the restaurant menu Told "No. You both have to order from the same menu" After much "discussion" I ordered from the restaurant menu. However, after an hour an a half and a drink, I was totally "past" waiting and left to go back to my room totally upset for a spoiled evening. My husband spoke to the manager who apologised and discounted the food and drink. However, this did not go any way to salvaging what should have been a lovely break, the first since lockdown. Never again.

Really clean, staff friendly. Food delicious, service excellent, well done Team. Had a lovely one night break, stayed in executive room which is worth paying the extra for.,tv in bathroom! Fresh milk to make Tea. Receptionist very welcoming. Bottle of iced water on reception for guests. Little touches that add a lot to your stay. Enjoyed the pool, all really clean. Food delicious, sat on terrace overlooking the garden. Would be nice if offered more cocktails. Cant wait to return.

The spa is incredible; both the quality of all the facilities and the services provided by all the staff there. Had a 55-minute treat by Sarah who is so professional and did an amazing treatment. Treatment was followed by afternoon tea which was to such a high standard and again came with great customer service. As for the hotel, there's not a single suggestion I could make to improve it, it's absolutely beautiful and every single staff member we came into contact with was so friendly and helpful. They knew it was a birthday and we had a handwritten birthday card and chocolates in the hotel room waiting, such a nice little extra. The rooms are done to a very high standard and have lovely views too. Unfortunately, the restaurant did let it down, massively long waiting times between each course. We had been sat down for over an hour and a half before we got our mains. There was a large school prom on that night so I'm not sure if maybe there were staffing issues trying to cover everything. Unfortunately the prices don't match the quality we received. I'm not a steak expert but I asked for my steak medium and it came very very well done and had clearly been left for a while as it wasn't hot at all which is a little disappointing. £6 for 3 very small pieces of bread was also a bit steep. The front of the house staff team that night were quite young and every single one of them was so professional and fantastic at their jobs, definitely a credit to the hotel. Just a shame that the kitchen side really lets it down. I cannot recommend the hotel and the spa enough, you will not be disappointed at all, it's incredible, but I would suggest eating out instead of the restaurant.

Had the perfect mother and daughter spa day at rookery hall today. We had the half day afternoon tea spa day and now feel so relaxed. Our therapists Emma and Kelly were very professional and really talented at our massage and facial - one of the best massages I have had. The afternoon tea had a great cake selection - we couldn’t finish them all so we were given a take away box which was kept in a cold room for us. Just an example of the little details they thought of. Additionally (due to Covid, I assume) we had our own changing room which made us feel very special!

My wife and I stayed in a suite for the first weekend in July and were looking forward to this, given that it was our first stay in a hotel since February 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. The hotel itself is a beautiful building set within lovely grounds in the Cheshire countryside. As soon as you arrive the quietness and luxury feel encourages you to do nothing other than relax. Check-in was straight forward, as you would expect and the receptionist showed us to our room, all in a very COVID secure manner. The room itself, whilst missing a few items (like the coffee table), was exactly what we had expected. It had a luxury feel and was spotlessly clean. Given the above, one may wonder how a poor rating was awarded to Rookery Hall and unfortunately this is purely down to the service, or lack of, within the restaurant and bar area. The issues we encountered were as follows: - After checking in, we decided to drop our bags and head for a drink on the patio before returning to our room to get ready for dinner. This was around 18:15, the hotel was not overly busy and there were only a few other tables occupied both inside and out. There were at least 4 members of staff hovering at the bar and waiting on. After 30 minutes of waiting, I followed another guest's cue and went inside to see if it would be possible to order a drink. After a further 20 minute wait I had to go back in to check where the drink was. When it did arrive my drink was fine, however my wife's Aperol Spritz was instead half a pint of neat Aperol over ice so had to be returned. - Having prebooked the tasting menu some three weeks prior to our stay, we were seated and then advised that they would have to check whether we could have the tasting menu as you need to book this in advance. When I queried this, they checked and advised that we were in fact ok to have the tasting menu. We then ordered wine, which arrived after the first course and was the wrong bottle. - After dinner we enjoyed a couple of drinks in the bar, which were slow to be served. We also had the pleasure of overhearing a conversation between a member of staff and a supervisor/manager about their desire to be made permanent and be given a contract rather than working as a "casual". A conversation that perhaps should have taken place in an office rather than in front of guests. - On the Saturday morning we decided to have breakfast in the room which arrived on time. Butter and jam was provided for toast, however the toast was missing. After calling through to room service this was brought to the room in a napkin rather than on a plate which resulted in soggy warm bread. - On the Saturday evening we had room service (meals and drinks), we ordered this at around 1930 and received this around 2100, we were not made aware of any potential delays when ordering. - Breakfast on the Sunday morning was enjoyed in the restaurant, however this became a comedy of errors. We were not offered any juices, tea was brought to the table and plonked on a tray in front of me without strainers and so it went on. There were at least four other tables occupied with each of them also having to request items that should have been given or correct mistakes with their orders or that they were yet to order despite the table next to them already having their food when they arrived after them. The number of apologies being given by the waiting on staff was became both amusing and embarrassing. - Upon checking out I was not asked how our stay had been, however I did offer some feedback on the level of service but was not asked for any further information and did not get the feeling that it would be taken seriously. We did not complain at the time of encountering each issue. In all honesty, in isolation the above would not really be a big issue. However given the cost of the stay, the meals, drinks etc. and the fact that this is supposed to be a luxury 4 star hotel we felt that the service was somewhat lacking and nowhere near experiences that we have had at other hotels and restaurants. The shame of this is that the quality of the food is of a high standard, we thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu and the afternoon tea that we enjoyed on the Saturday was first class. The staff were also very pleasant, you could also tell that they were working hard to get things right but seemed to lack both the experience required and any type of direction or management. Breakfast for example would have been served in a much better way by simply allocating roles to the waiting staff rather than have everyone doing the same thing! I am a great believer in giving someone the opportunity to put something right before airing your views in public. Unfortunately, despite mentioning on checkout that we were unhappy with the level of service and emailing feedback.rookery@handpicked.co.uk six days ago I have received no feedback or contact from anyone at the hotel. To summarise, this is a lovely hotel, the food is great, the rooms are spotless and inline with expectations which is how I arrived at the review title of "Frustratingly disappointing", with a few minor adjustments this could well have been a 5/5 glowing review! It will certainly make me think twice before returning or booking a stay within the Handpicked group.
