Over an 8 day holiday on Big Island we stayed in resort and budget hotels and B&Bs. I was looking for a place to stay near the valley which wasn't expensive. The Waipio Hostel (as we know it) is essentially three basement bedrooms under this old plantation cottage looking out to sea. When we arrived, we headed down a side... More

We just returned from our trip to the Big Island. 2 adults and 3 teen girls(one a Foreign Exchange student and Stephen could converse in her language! She loved it!) We stayed upstairs in the main area of the home (Hostel downstairs). Was fully supplied with plenty of comfortable room for all! This exceeded our expectations! You could almost hear/feel... More

Our family booked a stay at the Alegre Plantation house because we wanted to experience the Waipio Valley. What a pleasant surprise! Staying here is like being invited into a friends house for a couple of days. Stephen is a gracious host, the house was clean, quiet, well equipped and beautiful. The view from the backyard is an ever changing... More

This is a beautifully located Antique plantation house, conveying a genuine feel of rural Hawaiian life. Located minutes drive from Honokaa on one side and the magnificent Waipio Valley on the other, it is very comfortable for families planning a tour of the east side of the big island from Volcanoes Park, the waterfalls, botanical gardens, Hilo, all the way... Price-quality is very good here. You will get a comfortable and clean house on an excellent location close to Waipio Valley. The stars are amazing! Try to talk to the owner to explore a hidden magic walk at the back of the hostel with a view, even more beautiful than the lookout point of the Waipio Valley! Great experience...

Stayed there May June 2011, clean, comfortable, Stephen is a charming philanthropic host with stories and character that makes you respect his endeavours. Functional, inexpensive, an excellent base to explore the area, in particular Waipio valley and, if you're an adventurous type, try and find the Hiilawe falls.

This is a well located hostel for the Waipi'o Valley area BUT the bathroom is unacceptable. It hosts wet cement floors and very old fixtures. We didn't feel we could even sit on the toilet seat - sort of like an unmaintained campground bathroom. The bedroom was fine with clean comfortable beds. The area includes a community living area but... More
