Travelers' Choice 2019 Winner
Certificate of Excellence
Hotel Esencia is a 50-acre private estate, with an awe-inspiring beachfront, two swimming pools, day spa, three restaurants, and an indulgent atmosphere fitting of royalty. In fact, the property and many of the buildings once served as the exclusive beach-side retreat of an Italian duchess. Though friendly, warm and generous, the duchess demands the very best and Esencia still benefits from her superior taste, her impeccable style, and her zest for life.

A beautiful resort in a beautiful location that feels secluded and remote in spite of being a short car ride away from both Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. The rooms, pools, beach and grounds are all pristine. But what really sets this resort apart from similarly priced

From beginning to end the service is welcoming, professional and warm. The jungle is packed with non-threatening animals, lush manicured (but not in an uptight way) gardens and the lyrical sounds of nature. The beach is perfectly set up for sunning, napping or looking out onto

Dear Voyager08539693066, You are most kind to post this lovely review. It was indeed the extraordinary nature that surrounds Hotel Esencia that captured my own heart when I bought the hotel five year ago. As Cancun has become exceptionally accessible with non-stop flights here from almost everywhere in the western world I immediately felt the instinct to protect Hotel Esencia and its pristine near private beach -- one of the few just an hour from mainland USA which hasn't been overrun. Thanks for recognizing that so many travelers really count on these reviews to help them decide where to spend their holidays. I truly appreciate your taking the time to provide your feedback here and most of all for taking a chance on us in the first place for your mini-vacation. I will be sure to alert my staff to your extremely kind words. On behalf of all of us, I hope we have the chance to welcome you again one day! All the best, Kevin Wendle Owner and CEO

Dear H3526HKkates, Thanks so much for sharing your lovely feedback here on Trip Advisor. I know that our chef Luis was already quite pleased to see that you consider his food "to die for." In addition to the regular menus in our three restaurants he has just launched a special separate menu with a wide variety of vegetarian options -- all quite delicious I'm proud to say. I agree that all the nature and wildlife that surrounds is truly magical. We are all quite lucky to be able to experience it here every day and happy we had the chance to share it with you. All the best, Kevin Wendle Owner and CEO

The hotel is beautiful, it has the perfect combination of forest and beach. The rooms are spacious and super well design. The most impressive aspect was the service, they would do anything to make our stay memorable.

Dear Jet25532201161, My sincere thanks for the 5 star review! Though we are of course quite proud of our spectacular beach and the nature that surrounds us I'm especially proud of my team of professionals who truly love what they do. We are a small family resort and live on property so each member of the team is carefully selected. We love working with nice people and we've empowered them to provide a truly 5 star experience whatever it takes. All the best, Kevin Wendle Owner and CEO

Is hotel esencia all inclusive?
It is not! They may offer meal packages but it’s not an all inclusive, it’s a boutique hotel. Food is excellent.

They do have paddle boarding and I think they had kayaks. No volleyball. Don't recommend biking on Hwy 307. No bike paths and a little too busy with traffic. You can have a cab pick you up and head to Puerto Aventuras. It's easy to also rent a car in Cancun and head south to Tulum. You will love Esencia. Why leave?

I don’t know about fly fishing. The day we arrived the seaweed smell was pretty bad (of course they clean off the seaweed itself so the beach is immaculate) but the rest of the four days it was beautiful— no smell at all. As the other responder said, it depends on the tides.

Is there fly fishing in the area?
There is in Akumal but the best is in Punta Allen. Contact Greg Rahe In Punta. I can't remember his company and Trip Advisor won't let me give you his email. Just Google his name. They can send a boat to pick you up at certain docks south of Tulum. Or they might pick you up from Escenia. But that would be a long boat ride. If you have a car it's a piece of cake. I rent a car all the time and drive to certain parts of the biosphere to fish in the bays. Caught small permit. But Greg is the way to do it. His guides are great and know where the fish are. Have been fishing with his guides twice and each time it's been epic. Bones Jacks, Tarpon and Snook. All on a fly. Have fun and enjoy Escencia. It's fabulous.

We did not use the meal plan. We did drive around and ate at Tulum mostly, we loved to explore the region. The restaurants at the property are excellent but we thought they were a bit too expensive.
