We choose the Hotel Catalonia mainly because it was adults only and, also, as we had not stayed there previously. We were late arriving due to Cancun passport control having just one official checking passports for at least five planes. Then we got stopped at security due to their bizarre method of pressing a button to see who they decide to stop and search! The hotel however had plenty of staff on reception and we were quickly in our room and looking forward to our first Mojito The room itself was basic and the TV had very few English-speaking channels. The mini bar is topped up daily. The cleaning seemed to be a little dis-organised as we sometimes got back to the room at 4 or 5pm and it had still not been cleaned. The hotel was a lot smaller than others we have stayed at and we found it easy to get around. There is a privilege block, but I can’t honestly see what real extra benefits it brings other than a very small dip pool, small part of beach sectioned off and their own bar and restaurant. One of the biggest issues I have with hotels in Mexico (and other countries on the continent) is that smoking seems to be permitted basically anywhere. One night we even had an American sat in an enclosed bar asking if anyone would mind him smoking his obnoxious cigar. The pool also seems to have a smoke anywhere you feel like it rule. Another rule seemingly not adhered to is that sun beds cannot be reserved. Many were daily (although to be fair it seems to be a North of England bizarre tradition given most were reserved by them!) so unless you want to arrive at the pool extra early in the morning to put your towels and pegs on them you probably won’t get a decent sun bed. There is a lot of activities organised throughout the day, I felt that some of them did not fit in with the general demographic of the hotels guests and would be more suited to a younger clientele, however some people were joining in so maybe it’s an age thing on my part! The swim up bar was a great place (superbly tendered by Oscar) to enjoy a relaxing cocktail until after lunchtime when the drink really kicks in and some of the guests get progressively nosier and rowdy and even in one case struggle to get out the pool and then collapse on the pool side drunk as a skunk to await medical assistance! The hotel cannot be held reasonable for the mindless behaviour of their guests however! There is a smaller bar next to a cafe restaurant but again the smoking rule is not enforced. I have to say the sandwiches in the café were excellent and recommended for a light lunch time snack and the service by Carlos was also first rate. The beach really is beautiful with plenty of beds, there is also fruit bar that served excellent juices. Again, my only real complaint is that you find a nice bed only to have a smoker arrive and you end up smelling as bad as them!! The food in the restaurants was overall very good with quite a bit of choice. The buffet restaurant was our favourite and a special mention to Quetzabel who runs the restaurant very professionally always with a smile on her face. The lobby bar closes at 11.00pm which I feel personally is a bit early as the only other bar open is the one by the pool. The service was also a bit hit and miss sometimes in this bar. There is a small market that opens twice a week, whilst we bought an item from it, I really did get fed up of strolling past only to be accosted by the vendors to buy their goods. Also, if you have a room near the market you will be disturbed by them packing up after midnight! Overall the hotel is a very nice place to spend a couple of weeks in the sun with good food and a nice environment. However, the smoking, noise and hounding by the market vendors and also the monopolising of the beds would put me off returning. However in saying all that, we enjoyed our stay at the Catalonia and being in the company of generally nice people for two weeks, I would read subsequent reviews before deciding whether to return however to see if the minor issues I mentioned have been resolved.

Hotel's Favorite
Well where to start!! After looking at lots of hotels and reviews Catalonia Royal Tulum was booked and wow we certainly made the right choice! After long day travelling we were welcomed with a fruit cocktail and immediately made to feel welcome. We decided to upgrade to the Privilege pack (main reason was the BLoved restaurant). Layout of the hotel was unique as you walk through the jungle from reception to get to the rooms (where you are greeted by small coati animals which are very friendly) and then carry on through more jungle where you reach the lovely pool and beach (wow). The Asian, Italian, Mexian, Breakfast & Dinner buffet restaurants are located reception end and the Buffet Lunch, Tapas, Snack and Steak restaurants are by the pool area with BLoved by the beach. Great layout. Food was very good quality. Our favourites were BLoved and Steak restaurants. Pool fantastic with a great swim up bar and plenty of sun beds. Beach amazing, very clean and cleaned everyday so no problem with seaweed. Also plenty of sunbeds. All the staff were so friendly and always had a smile on their face. They obviously enjoy their job. I could name individuals but feel that would be unfair to the others, they are all amazing. Rooms and whole hotel area was spotless. Aside from the pool bar there are 2 others, one located in reception area and the other by the pool. This made sure that wherever you were eating there is a bar nearby. Would we return -YES. Thank you for making our first trip to Mexico such a memorable one.

Dear Ian, WOW! I'm speechless. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to be your accommodation in the Riviera Maya and above all, being your first experience in Mexico, has been a total honor for us. We are very happy to know that the expectations were met and ( I dare to say ) exceeded, all this result has been possible thanks to the wonderful staff that makes up Catalonia Royal Tulum. In short, we hope that you come back, that you repeat this experience and that we achieve your total fidelity. Thank you very much for choosing us. Best regards,

I see that most grievances are about food. To be clear, I have booked a privileged room both times I've stayed here and eaten exclusively at the B Loved restaurant at my friend's recommendation. The food at B Loved is spectacular. The staff resort-wide are lovely, the facilities are kept well, and the beach is the most stunning I've ever been to.

We stayed at this beautiful hotel for 11 days. Upon arrival you are greeted with a gorgeous cocktail and a very welcome cold flannel/face cloth in the very lovely open reception area. The 6 different room blocks are separated by a lovely forest home to these cute little animals (cannot remember the name!!) and then over the bridge and opening onto a lovely pool area and a stunning beach. We very much appreciated that there was always a sunbed available either by the pool or beach. All the staff are lovely and really friendly. Always wearing a smile and incredibly kind and helpful. I am so impressed with their hard work to keeping the whole resort clean and spotless. From their constant scoping of empty glasses to even picking up twigs and leaves from the rain. I honestly cannot praise the staff enough for everything they do. Very hard workers. Our room was comfortable and fresh with a lovely waterfall shower and kept beautifully spotless and towels changed when necessary. I particularly like the fact that they supply beach towels and then change them every evening during turndown service. However if you miss it, you can always swap them at reception. Breakfast buffet and the Bloved (for premium) restaurant did a superb breakfast, with the buffet offering a ridiculous amount of different food from fresh fruit to waffles and pancakes. Lunch at the buffet by the pool was always very nice and with different options daily. We also enjoyed the snack bar, located opposite and next to the bar. The only downside to our stay was the dinner food. We were the most disappointment with the tapas and Mexican restaurants. We were really looking forward to authentic food but sadly it was not. It wouldn’t stop us from coming back but I can see room for great improvement on that front. Overall if you’re looking for a very relaxing holiday with a lovely atmosphere we would fully recommend.

It was our 1st visit to this resort/ we’ve holiday in this area several times. As always the staff / the food/ and Mexican hospitality was amazing. I’d read some reviews on the accommodation and upgraded upon arrival and glad of it. It wasn’t cheap to up grade but we spent our 1st night in assigned room NOT GOOD. I wouldn’t have survived it was stark bare need of a better cleaning and paint and perhaps a retrofit. The upgraded room was very nice painted/ clean and had been recently upgraded. I was on top floor and it was bright above the mangrove jungle around the resort. The beach at this resort is amazing very little coral / clean/ great for a good walk and very quiet. As previously mentioned the staff were amazing I’d like to single out one individual VICTORIA/ this young lady always greeted us and our room was always in immaculate condition. Make sure you take a good environmental body spray lots of hungry insects lots of bites. Enjoy
