My partner and I visited Playa Sonrisa in September, off season and quiet, exactly what we were looking for after a busy few months at work. We flew to Cancun and drove to Xkalak, breaking up the journey by staying in Tulum each way. The drive was easy enough and we had no problem finding our way. Playa Sonrisa was everything we were looking for. We stayed in a comfortable bungalow which looked onto the coconut trees, beach and ocean. We spent much of the time swimming in the ocean and sitting under the trees (but not under a coconut!) with a book and a drink. It was relaxing and we felt recharged after a week there. Murph and Cindy were great hosts, really friendly, welcoming and sensitive to the needs of their guests. They had done a great job of designing the restaurant and bar area, done in the local style but with a few nostalgic signs of their home country. We enjoyed hanging out there. The food was really good, and during my early morning swims I always looked forward to the breakfast buffet, which included local fruit and freshly cooked/baked items. Dinner was provided on some days and not others, which Murph explained to us at the outset. The dinners we had there were delicious, without exception. The final meal was a real treat as we had lobster. On a couple of evenings we drove into Xkalak for dinner, and had very respectable pizzas at an oceanside joint. For anyone looking for a high energy party atmosphere, Tulum might be a better option (although these days the clothing optional opportunities are limited). But if like us you wanted to unplug and relax in a stunning natural environment, Playa Sonrisa is perfect. Thanks to Cindy and Murph for being great hosts. We were sad to leave and hope one day to return.

My partner surprised me with a stay at Playa Sonrisa for my birthday. He worked with Murph to make it very memorable with a lovely dinner. Beautiful location, lovely small village and a great private beach. The beach front bungalow has an amazing view and was well appointed.

We spent a memorable week at Playa Sonrisa. The hosts Cindy and Murf are so cool, helpful and friendly that we felt immediately at home. The clean facilities allow for a comfortable stay, and Cindy’s food is just fantastic. We enjoyed every meal. The resort is 5km from the small fishing village of Xcalak, itself about 400km from Cancun. A very easy drive, about 5 hours long. This place is so beautiful and calm, and the weather so perfect! We felt blessed to be there and explore the area’s virgin beaches and coves. The astronomer in me appreciated the super dark sky with an unobstructed view of the southern horizon. Hello Southern Cross and Magellanic Clouds! We go back to this last piece of paradise as soon as we can! Johanne and Pierre

This resort is so quiet, tranquil and amazing. We spent a week and thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. Murph and Cindy are great hosts and the food is top notch. My wife has gluten intolerance and despite not giving her much notice, Cindy was a wiz at creating GF options for her. I would recommend this gem of a resort to anyone wanting to unplug from the world. We loved the beach and the found this place to be a very welcoming an easy place enjoy a nude experience.

We spent 11 fabulous days at the Playa Sonrisa in Xcalak, Quintana Roo, Mexico – a 5 hour drive south of Cancun near the Belize border. We had the most excellent relaxing experience. Cindy and Murph are outstanding hosts! We were a bit apprehensive travelling to such a remote place in a foreign country. Our fears were totally unfounded! The only hazard we encountered was the potential of a falling ‘free range’ coconut while relaxing on the beach! A few did fall during the day but don’t worry, no waste occurred … Cindy incorporated those coconuts into a mouthwatering dessert! Murph describes the resort accurately on their web site and we were definitely not disappointed. Xcalak is literally ‘off the grid’ with no landlines, cell towers or commercial electricity distribution. Playa Sonrisa does have rudimentary connectivity to the Internet that is ‘good enough for email’. An EXCELLENT Dinner is provided four nights a week at the resort and for a change, we were fortunate to have 3 meals at the Leaky Palapa – YUM. The entire resort (6 couples plus Murph and Cindy) were all able to go to dinner there and help Linda and Marla (also Canadians) wind up their season in Xcalak. We visited a few local places (Toby’s, XTC Dive Centre, Costa de Cocos), all were great. If you want a really wonderful experience, no tan lines, no early reservation issues with beach chairs at a resort, and a chance to think about nothing or everything, you need to try Playa Sonrisa. We WILL be back, ASAP!!! And…We need to defend our beach bocce win.
