Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya receives high marks for its cleanliness, with guests frequently applauding the well-kept beaches and commendable housekeeping. The resort's vibrant atmosphere, bolstered by themed events and live entertainment, is a hit, although some guests mention noise disruptions can be a downside. While the exceptional service is a highlight for many, the value proposition is sometimes questioned due to additional costs.
The rooms are generally celebrated for their comfort, yet there are occasional noise complaints. Nestled in a prime location, the hotel's proximity to attractions is a significant draw for travelers.

Detailed Reviews
This was our second trip here and it was fantastic. All the prep and hard work to keep things clean and safe was very evident on all levels. We had read about the seaweed in some other posts and it was there, but pretty minimal for the most part. There was only one bad day and that was after some rough storms had come through the prior day. Otherwise, it didn’t bother us or prohibit snorkeling at all.
The snorkeling was fantastic and we saw a bunch of turtles, rays and a huge assortment of different fish. The turtles were best at 8am and 5pm, and were always over in the neighboring resort near the boats, maybe 50 yards out in the ocean. It was an easy swim to get out where they were. Remember to bring your own gear, they aren’t giving that out at the resort right now.
Snorkeling was definitely the big highlight, but everything else was great as well. Food was awesome at every restaurant. Breakfast wasn’t the normal buffet, but all the same great options were available just with servers. Service was always great and we really loved Felipe who assisted us most days by the quiet pool. The shows were really cool. We especially liked the magic show, aqua routine, fire performance and the Elements show.
Only a couple things I would mention to some people to avoid any confusion. If you book through the resort and they have a promotion that says you can get a room upgrade if available at checkin or you get some amount of resort cash, just know that is not a free upgrade. We asked during checkin and were told a room was available but we had to pay the extra amount. I’m not sure how that’s promotion, I can ask if an upgrade is available at any hotel and if it’s available they’ll give it to me if I pay for it. Also, because they did have a room available, we didn’t get the resort cash. This was annoying at the time, but we obviously didn’t let it ruin the vacation or even bother us after the initial 15 minute grudge haha. The second thing is that when you checkin, a staff member will give you a quick rundown of the resort while your bags are being sanitized. I’m not sure if the bag part is true, but the quick resort rundown is to try and get you to a breakfast the next morning with a VIP rep who will sell you on their VIP membership. Before you have any idea what happened you’ve signed up for the breakfast. We did cancel that after we gathered our senses. Heard from some others that it lasted well over two hours and was a high pressure sales process. We had zero interest in that so I’m glad we got out. Some people were very interested so if that’s a deal your looking for then by all means, just wanted to put it out there so people who may not know what’s going will realize it.

This is one of the most amazing resorts I have ever stayed!
Location: about 1.5 hours away from CUN airport in the town of Akumal
Rooms: We had a preferred tropical view room, it was great, there is a big jacuzzi where 2 people can fit perfectly, the bed is super comfy. They have a privacy box where you can request room service to be deposited if you dont want to be bothered. We also had a small pool in the balcony, also good for 2 people and you can fill it with whatever water temperature is convenient for you.
The AC wasn't working really good since they state that they have a sensor where if it doesn't detect motion it turns off, so nights can be quite hot since of course you are not moving!
The bathroom lacks of real privacy since there is only a small sliding door in between the bathroom and the room and the doors are glass.
Pools: They have 3 pools, they were all quite empty except for the ocean front one.
Food/beverage: It was quite surprising, very good food for an AI
In general the resort is quite well maintained, the beach is not the greatest but that is not really the hotel's fault, it is just the location.
They have implemented very good hygiene practices due to COVID, we felt very safe at all times, all the employees are wearing facemasks and protection all the time even if there are no guests around. The buffets are assisted now and there are large gaps in between tables at the restaurants, temperature checks, disinfecting mats, and antibacterial everywhere.
I would like to extend a special thank you note to our concierge down in building 6, she made a magnificent job! This was an engagement trip and she took care of everything for it to be perfect. Thank you so much and we expect to come back soon!

We stayed at Secrets for 4 nights. We were in the VIP section with partial ocean view. I am a Master Secrets Agent and can get my clients extra perks. We had 25% off at the spa, in room champagne breakfast, VIP Lounge access which was amazing, $200 resort credit, a bottle of alcohol of our choice in our room and more. The restaurants are all a la carte except a few which was very nice. The food was amazing! The staff and service were top notch. The beach was clear of any seaweed and the beach service was fast and plentiful. Loved the fluffy chairs on the beach and pool. Only wish would be a beach front restaurant and if the hedges were cut down at the infinity pool so you can see the beach from the pool. I would recommend staying here, and if you'd like to book it through me, please message me and I can send you a free quote. I don't charge a fee to book any trip. Will be back to a Secrets resort for sure!

My wife and I visited Secrets,Akumal from Dec.10th to the 17th.We booked online via United Airlines travel and flew from our local airport in Pa. We booked a preferred room package for 7 days with transportation to and from the airport, with trip insurance we paid $3500 which we considered a good deal.
Last year at about the same time we stayed a week at Excellence,Riviera Cancun for about the same price
in a upscale room package. Both resorts feature fine dinning, beautiful rooms and great service from a friendly staff. We did not return to Excellence because the beach was full of seaweed,a common problem in the area.
Reviews said that the Akumal area did not have a seaweed problem and they were correct. The beach at Secrets was clean with good snorkeling and swimming.Finding a beach spot was never a problem,if you didn't claim a spot in the early morning, staff were available later in the day to help you. There was a lifeguard on duty with security guards posted at both ends of the property.Beach service and fresh towels.were always available. My only disappointment was there were no turtles for viewing as Dec. and the winter months are not prime season for them.
Both resorts feature nice pools,3 at secrets and a lazy river at Excellence My main complaints was that the water was cold last year at Excellence and Secrets promised heated pools for the winter months. The pools were not heated during our stay,I felt the water coming out of the inlet jets and it was cool.

My boyfriend and I visited Secrets Akumal from 12/5 - 12/12/20. We booked a preferred room and felt it was well worth the additional cost for the services received. We were extremely pleased with the social distancing protocol during check in, as well as throughout our stay. The resort is beautiful, and the property and beach are well manicured. Due to Covid, we opted against most excursions, however, I booked two snorkel trips in the sea turtle preserve with a private guide right off the beach. The cost was $30 for each trip and I went for an hour + each time. It was exhilarating to be so close & observe these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. I brought my own snorkel, however, you can also purchase one at the resort. They have two gift shops. One is more casual with beach sundries, and the other has lovely boutique style items. They also provide large sized toiletries in the room, including sunscreen & sanitizer. This is most helpful, especially with weight limits on luggage. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the food & service at Secrets Akumal is amazing. Consuela and Juan at Bordeaux were wonderful....as were Paula and Jesus at Oceana. Israel and Jhony provided a special romantic chef's dinner for us at Seaside, and Naomi was always a gracious hostess. Orlando was our beach waiter - always incredibly fast service. He remembered our favorites and even made great drink suggestions for us. His service was timely and always friendly. Thanks to Arturo in security, Felipe our pool waiter, and David, our wonderful and attentive concierge who was always on top of everything. Thank you also to Rosalin, the gardener, who took the time from pruning a tree to talk about the flowers and fauna. This resort is a very special place.....not just because of the beautiful location and weather, but because of the wonderful people that worked so hard to make our vacation so special.

How do I start? I know so many people talk about great trips but this location is one of the most accommodating I can find. The Entertainment team, Jordan, Jessica and the rest team keep you involved in activities as well as fun conversation. Jonathan at the pool side was the BEST our chairs were set up each morning and our towels for our chairs were refreshed in the afternoon. The drinks were handed to us before we even had to ask. When they saw an almost empty glass we received a full one. To move on to the meals. The food was outstanding and the chiefs really made it happen when we had chiefs tables or at the regular table. We tasted food at the pool side one afternoon and couldn’t find one of the desserts that we loved, so, yes, it was made for us and delivered to the restaurant we were eating at that night. Our morning serves at the buffet Edgar and Roberto were also outstanding. I wanted fried cheese and they made it happen. I could go on and on about the excellent service and the many individuals that made our trip special. For our Anniversary the concierge had our room decorated with balloons, rose pedals, dessert and Champagne. What can I say if you haven’t had the pleasure of vacationing at Akumal Riviera Maya Secrets you must add it to your bucket list.

We never really like the all-inclusive concept as we prefer to try out local restaurants and find our own variety. We were attending a wedding at Secrets Akumal and so that is why we booked there. I have to admit that we had a great time, enjoyed all of our meals in the resort restaurants, poolside Fish Market, and room service. The resort grounds were well maintained and had little paths through the greenery that brought you to hammocks or benches. Snorkeling masks could be borrowed (snorkels were purchased for $4) and we saw coral and plenty of fish. The room was lovely and the swim up room provided a nice balcony for coffee and meals when we chose to stay in. The swim up pools are shared by just the other rooms that are on the first floor of that side of the building (in our case 4 rooms). The resort (and actually everyplace we saw in the Cancun/Akumal area) took Covid precautions seriously by disinfecting luggage, steaming tables at restaurants, and giving hand sanitizer to people entering restaurants and shops). We felt comfortable the whole time and the staff was extremely helpful. The only negative we had was the watermelon juice on the final day seemed a little watered down, but it was delicious every other time we had it. We had preferred status and while we didn’t use the two little bottles of liquor that were provided daily, we did appreciate being close to the beach (preferred club buildings are the closest to the beach) and stopping into the club room for a quick snack and drink or coffee, plus having breakfast at Seaside. Our rate was just a few dollars more per day than the regular rooms so it was worth it, but I have heard sometimes that difference is more significant and we may not have done it if that was the case. Now to the food, we ate at El Patio, the French restaurant, Fish Market, and Seaside. Our favorite was El Patio for a sit down dinner as the food was authentic and very tasty. The French restaurant had tasty white truffle included in the meal and everything else was cooked properly so the meat was tender and the escargot was tasty. Both options were great and the green juice and watermelon juice were a refreshing way to start. We also ate lunch there once and the tacos were amazing. While at the pool one day, we saw two guys walking up with freshly caught grouper and soon the Fish Market was cooking them up. They also had ceviche and giant shrimp. Yum! Perfect relaxing vacation and we’d do it again.

My wife and I were struggling to find a venue for our destination wedding. After a few contenders like Thailand and Bali we ultimately decided on beautiful Cancun.
Secrets Akumal hit everything we were looking for in terms of budget, vibe and location. It is quite a distance from Cancun Airport to Secrets but is totally worth it!
We opted for the Junior Suite Swimout King room since we booked a wedding we were given the VIP treatment. The resort was truly amazing and everything beyond the experience we thought it would be. The amount of pools at the resort and the abundance of restaurants to pick and choose from was a joy. Additionally the staff everyone single one of them was so helpful and pleasant to deal with, any question big or small they were able to assist with.
Me wife and I choose the Ultimate Wedding Package with 28 guests had the pleasure of working with wedding coordinators Abi and Jazmin who were amazing and so easy to deal with. The thought of planning a wedding with so daunting and difficult but Abi and Jazmin made the process so easy and straightforward. They were always so timely and thorough with their responses whenever we had a question with our wedding.
We had our wedding at the beach and the setup was everything we though it would be a bit windy for the ceremony but hey you're outside and can't control the wedding but it was everything we wanted.
Cocktail hour and reception dinner was at the Chiba Gardens and we were given a heads up that a small storm tropical storm might rain out our reception and we were tasked with the decision to carry on at the garden or move to a back up location. We decided to risk it and stay with the planned location but if the case it did rain we were going to be moved to a location with a roof. As the reception dinner loomed and when we were about to be announced it rained cats and dogs! No biggie this was expected and rain in your wedding day is good luck. While Abi and Jazz and the team moved the tables and some of the decor to the back up location we ducked out and got some drinks to get a little more loose. Abi and the team did such a great job of moving the items in the back up location while we dried off =).
Overall the wedding was a fantastic success, honestly me and my I did not eat too much of the food since we were so busy taking photos and making the rounds with our guests. But the guests said the food at cocktail hour and the reception was great. Bride and groom be sure to eat! The DJ was great and keep the dance floor poppin and we danced the night away. We all chanted one more song after the last song was played but continued the party at desires nightclub.
This resort is highly recommended for a vacation away or a destination wedding. You won't regret it!
My husband and I just came back from a 7 day stay at this beautiful resort. We were there to celebrate his birthday and our wedding anniversary and these two celebrations were taken into consideration (birthday banner on Suite door, champagne and fruit delivered to our suite one night and on our dinner the last night, were presented with a dessert plate with Happy Anniversary written). It was such a beautiful and relaxed experience! We feel this resort was totally ready to welcome guests and make them feel comfortable and safe with all the uncertainties we are now facing. The safety protocols in place automatically made us feel very comfortable. Upon arrival, we wiped our shoes on special mats, our temperature was taken, we filled out a COVID survey and were guided to our Suite (which we received an upgrade to a Preferred Suite). For sanitation purposes TV control, toiletries, coffee cups, glasses, and tablet were sealed in plastic pouches. Bedding was changed daily! At the breakfast Buffett our temperature was taken daily and were given hand sanitizer. The buffet was not self serve, it was assisted by the staff. Eating utensils at all the restaurants, were placed in a cloth pouch on your table. Only two people allowed in elevators and had hand sanitizer stations right outside. There were floor signs were to stand while waiting in any of the restaurants, dinner shows, and food stations around the pool. There were sanitizer gel stations throughout the resort and even hand washing stations. Most of the nightly shows and entertainment were held outside and the ones we saw inside the theater, the seats were arranged in twos and with ample space between them. ALL the Staff wears a mask and protective glasses. Is up to the guests if they want to wear a mask. The beach was absolutely beautiful!!!! There was only one day with a little bit of seaweed and workers were there cleaning it up. If you like to snorkel, bring your own gear since this activity is not part of the resort right now. Also bring mosquito repellent! Since the Resort is only allowed to be at 30% capacity, you don’t have to worry about being around a lot of people or waking up early to save a sun lounge. ALL the employees/staff throughout the Resort and on the beach, our concierge Araceli in building 6, treated us like we were the most important guests in the Resort. Upon checkout, we were given a certificate for one free night to be used on our next return! Secrets Akumal is a beautiful place to stay - a piece of paradise in the jungle! Can’t wait to be back!!!

Secrets Akumal Rivera Maya was an outstanding property. The property was well maintained and clean. The staff were extremely friendly and responsive. The property is expansive and took a little getting familiar with to navigate. The first couple days we would have to ask where certain restaurants were located and staff would not only tell you they would frequently walk you to the location. The bartenders at the swim up bar were excellent and I wanted to particularly mention Jeremais, Sergio, and Ivan. In the preferred club Augustine was great and in the Bordeaux restaurant Paul did a fantastic job.
The beach was well maintained and there were sufficient chase lounges and grass roof covers to relax at the beach.
The only negatives I noted were the lack of steak on the menus and lighting in the halls and outside our doors was not sufficient.
I have been to several of the Secrets properties in the Cancun area and Akumal has been the best so far.

There is no buffet restaurant in the evening, only a la cart, and no smart shorts.
Sometimes when they organize Pirates, Mexican night near the pool, men don't have to wear trousers.
Definitely enjoyed this resort. I see that many have addressed your Mom (we are in the same age group) but will add that it is a large resort and if she has mobility issues I would contact the resort to see where the best block of rooms would be, for example, is it better to be nearer the pools, or near the breakfast and lunch buffet area. There are elevators in each block and up/down from the front lobby. Several people had motorized scooters with them or needed wheelchairs and the support and caring approach by staff was excellent.
As for the college-aged - There were a number of water sports/activities available (beach based), beach and pool volleyball, fun participant or watching games eg running on water, pool exercises, morning yoga, a gym, etc on site , cycling tour, tours to Tulum Chichen Itza and some other off resort activities. There were local artisans who came, shows in the evening and afternoon often, and life saving (for me in early morning before breakfast) — a 24/7 coffee shop!
Wine, unless you go for the expensive bottles in the international/French or Italian restaurants that are from France, Italy, US are perhaps not what you might be looking for. They have some for SA as part of the all inclusive package that are decent but not exceptional if you are a wine connoisseur.
Depending how strict you are re food and its preparation, there are vegetarian options at the buffet and there are at least one option labelled on each menu (but not so much strict vegan).
Have a great time!
