We had an excellent family vacation at Palladium White Sand during the last week of November 2020. This is a dffficult time during the pandemic, and many things in the resort have changed, but we still had a good time. There was excellent service from a lot of people who made us feel like part of the family, and we want to thank them. We especially want to thank all the waiters and waitresses of the La Laguna and La Dalia restaurants, especially Maria Esther Uh Hoil. There were also two bartenders at the bar La Jarra, Jacinto and Maria, who made our trip unforgettable. Our driver Adolfo also gave us great service in transportation. Overall, we are very grateful to the staff and want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone.

I booked this back in early February for our family (2 rooms) for Thanksgiving week. We normally do cruises for Thanksgiving but we opted for a resort for the first time in 10 years and thank goodness we did since cruising is definitely out! After 11 hours of travel time check in was easy enough and when I asked about dinner reservations for that night she promptly directed me to the Travel Club guide waiting to pounce. I politely told her I'm not interested in their Travel Club and after traveling the entire day we were ready to see our room. She didn't care. The guide jumped on in. He asked if I had read reviews what did they say? I told him of course I did and all of them talked about the pushy travel club people. He kind of backed off at that point but every time we walked into the lobby - here he came and off we ran. It was a bit over the top. The room was VERY musty. I've done Mexico before - I just brought a candle and realize I have to wash every single thing that came in that room when we get home - it does reek....but I get it. Loved the shower and the tub. I had to kick my teenager out of the room so I could take a bath. There is not much in the way of privacy for any of your bathroom functions and needs! The beds - it's been a long time since I've had to sleep in a full bed with my husband. We are pretty small people and it was very crowded. Everything worked thankfully in the room. I had read reviews and met people that had problems with their rooms. I picked this place for the activities offered for my parents and our teenager. Unfortunately the teen club was closed up with no additional offerings for teens to go or hang out. That was a disappointment. My parents cancelled the trip because of Covid. It's hard to compare this to what it could have been pre Covid with entertainment and activities but as it was - there wasn't much too it. I didn't see much in the way of fun pool games but we spent most days on the beach - I have a pool - who wants to see that on vacation! No bar service on the beach - you had to walk up to the one that was open which was fine - never many people. Drinks were pretty light in liquor (like a splash) and we did ask for top shelf brand liquor and never seemed to have a problem. Except in the lobby I ordered a Bailey's and I got a local knock off that wasn't right....but you could get Bailey's in the restaurant bars. Safety - I felt very comfortable here 99% of the time. Everyone had masks when needed, all the staff wore PPE. The only bad day was our first breakfast and La Dalia was the only option and the entire resort had to go to this INSIDE restaurant. I don't understand why the outdoor buffet wasn't open that day. It was crowded and they wouldn't let me take food to the outside seating. Food - I really wanted to eat Poseidon as we are big fish lovers but was told it was closed for the week because of a flood and it did STINK down there. on the night before we left we were on a tram that took a couple there for dinner. I was like WHAT??? They lied to me it was closed. I thought all of the ala cart restaurants were pretty good. We always did a 5:30 seating and most times were the only table in there. THAT was nice and safe feeling. I found the app was not correct in many things. No food options late at night other than crappy room service and a delivery charge for that. I asked about the sports Bar (the app listed a menu). The dinner reservation clerk told me no only drinks. The app said the Japanese restaurant was closed but it was open and never could get a reservation. The app said Poseidon was open but the dinner clerk told me closed. we walked into two different places without a res and was able to get seated and served quickly. Buffet food was buffet food. Lack of servers and okay food. Things would run out and they wouldn't be replenished. I don't love the idea of ONE place open for the entire place to eat breakfast at. The beach grill was "okay" and SLOW. 30 minutes easy. We loved the natural habitat GP is set in. The animals running around are fantastic and people friendly for food. We enjoyed walking through the resort instead of using the trams. Things do need some repair and some things were downright dangerous. The steps on the bridges did not have lights and if you weren't looking and slowly feeling your way, you could miss that first step. We ended up walking around TRS just to site see and walk the bridges and trails. The beach is better the further north you get and just at the end of the resort it's really nice. The water was warmer and not rocky at all. We took kayaks out one day and saw huge sting rays swimming below us - that was cool. I understand they are running about 25% capacity and that would be hard to keep up with that enormous place and make sure the restaurants were open and staffed. I don't fault them for that and we thoroughly enjoyed every bit of our week there. Everyone seem to really be happy to help and make sure you had what you need. Thanks Palladium for a nice break from this Covid driven world of chaos.

So close to a 4.5-star rating (which I would then round up to 5) ... but I just can't quite get there based on my very good (but not great) experience at Grand Palladium Riviera Maya. Call it 4.25 out of 5.00. Couple of different families traveled together and visited during US Thanksgiving week. My family (mom, dad, boy (16), girl (11)) has been to the area before, but this was our first time at Grand Palladium. We chose this resort for mainly two reasons: 1/ We wanted to experience the "mega" resort with many, many things to do and explore (vs small-to-medium, like our last visit). 2/ We REALLY wanted to experience the "jungle vibe" from Grand Palladium. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we couldn't experience as much of the resort as we were hoping, and activities were quite limited. Having said that, the resort definitely delivers on that feeling of being right in the jungle - absolutely loved the dense foliage, the wildlife, the architecture. Brief Summary ============== The resort delivered on a really, really fun family vacation, largely due to location, beach, amenities, and the wonderful staff - especially the entertainment team. Cutting a little bit of slack for COVID related shutdowns (i.e., large portions of the resort non-operational), our experience was so close to a 5-star rating, but there were a couple of hiccups that prevent me from giving 5 stars. I give the resort full credit for doing its best in this difficult environment - the staff genuinely appreciated customers staying there, and it showed in their attitude. Details, details, and more details.... Things we loved ================ . Entertainment team. No one loves their job more than these folks, and it shows! Shout out to Adriana, Didi, Oliver, and Omar!! (Oliver, sorry I couldn't swing past and say goodbye at Sports Zone; we were delayed during checkout and ran out of time.) . Natural environment. Wonderful setting, lots of wildlife - loved it! . Brazilian, Tepanyaki, and Italian dinners - excellent! . Snorkeling off the beach. From the north end, you can enter in sand (limited rocks), then swim out maybe 100+ yards to some AMAZING underwater life. Conditions were hit-and-miss .. but when conditions were on, it was GREAT. . Service in general was EXCELLENT and the resort did its best in a difficult time. . Example 1: The first few days, the beach was terrible - lots of rock and coral everywhere. By Monday a.m., they had used a tractor to clean up the north end and give us that beautiful, soft sand experience. . Example 2: Was happy to see the dinner buffet resurrected on Monday of that week. Much needed "safety net" for dinner because reservation system was pretty mediocre. . Shout out to Veronica and Maria in the buffets at La Dalia and La Laguna. Loved your smiles, and thanks for letting me practice Spanish. . More shout outs to Alfredo, Antonio and Miguel at the Las Olas bar / restaurant. Always friendly and happy to make a drink. . Also, thanks to Mily at the front desk for keeping such a positive attitude. . Rooms in White Sand were very well insulated for noise - I was pleasantly surprised at how little noise came in from either courtyard or neighbors. Things that were mediocre ========================== . Buffet food in general (except the street tacos - WOW, they were good). . Lack of nightly entertainment (blame COVID). . No real 24hr "snacks" for teens (thinking of light snacks, not the limited room service menu). In normal times, I think Las Olas is 24 hrs, and I think the sports bar serves food till 1a (?), so that would be a much better experience. . Related: The room service menu is pretty limited and the food is mediocre - but I can understand how food gets soggy. . The new reservation system being used was pretty weak. We arrived on first day, only two a la cartes open (no buffet). So you have to go to one of the restaurants and they will "work you in" when they can. Expect long waits... . Then, when you try to make reservations for the rest of the week, you're looking at either early or very late dinners - prime time reservations were gone very quickly. . Lots of bridges were closed / under repair. While I do appreciate the opportunity to walk a bit, it was annoying to constantly walk in massive detours when you can see your destination just over the bridge that happens to be closed. . Roberto at check-in was maybe not having a good day. I'll give him credit for being efficient and quick. But I like a little more warmth and welcoming spirit. I even had to ask for towel cards. . Resort is showing its age and needs some TLC. Like someone else recently mentioned, the pavers / walking paths are very uneven due to age. The rooms were OK, but the common areas don't reflect anything really modern or nice. Example: In the hotel lobby and restaurant bathrooms, the men's rooms have manual flushing for all the toilets?? Hello - this is 2020, spend a little to upgrade to a touchless system. . Sargassum on the south end of beach was a bit heavier than I expected on a few mornings. Not a big deal, was either quickly cleaned up (some days), or easily avoided (if not cleaned). Definitely more than I was expecting in Nov. . Mattresses were OK, but not super comfortable. Back was quite sore toward the end of the week - but thankfully, stretching with Didi and Adriana solved that! . As crowds slowly increased during the week, Las Olas got overwhelmed during lunch (really from about noon to 5p every day). There were just too many folks trying to get a seat or order food to go. Expect waits of 45' at least. Almost no chance your order would come out right the first time - just too chaotic. That's a silly way to run a beachside restaurant at a resort like this. But unless you were willing to walk roughly 1km to the lunch buffet, you didn't have much choice. Things that were awful ===================== . Just one thing: Vacation club sales. OMG, what a horrible process. You check in, and then you're handed off to some equivalent of a used-car sales person to explain the resort to you. I'll give credit - our guy gave us a couple tidbits of useful information, since COVID has changed many things. But that was about 1-minute of useful time spend...in a 25-minute conversation. Eventually I used the kids as an excuse to get up and leave. When asked to come back next day at 9:30 for my free gift and tour, I refused to commit and said I wasn't interested in ANY free gifts. Thankfully, that got me out of the lobby that night. Just had to repeat it every time I saw them in the lobby for the rest of our stay.... Couple of times I had to remind myself that the "glass is half-full". Especially the first few days when things were bumpy. But I truly take my hat off to the resort operations team - they rolled up their sleeves and addressed several of those gaps during our stay. It was kind of fun to watch more and more things start to become operational. Hope to be back next year! Fingers crossed they have a good Christmas / New Years season so they can keep things rolling. Once a vaccine is widely available, I would love to go back and give GP another chance.

Been here 4 times over the years, awesome place! Service is great, Ernesto in the travel club takes care of everything! Diving is great right off the resort. We went to. Not too many people here now because of COVID. Things are scaled down a bit but we had a great time.
