March 21/2023 Just returning from my vacation at this resort and we had a great time. From the hotel manager down to the room cleaning staff. Everyone went out of their way to make sure we had an everything we needed. The beach and snorkelling was great.we had a beach front room with an awesome view of the ocean…We also included the sun club upgrade that was a good value…Big shout out to the sunclub concierge Alejandro and the front of the hotel attendants who helped me big time. We definitely will be returning. Welch family….
The resort pictures on line look nothing like your room when you arrive. They neglect to inform you on line the jungle view rooms are back down the main road closer to the highway in older buildings and you have to take a golf cart to get back and forth to the resort/beach. The rooms are very old and look nothing like on line pictures. They then want you to pay an un upgrade to move to the main resort buildings. I believe they do this so you have to pay an upgrade to stay in the main resort area. Beach does not look like on line pictures. Very small and few seats. Room was moldy smelling and no hot water. Toilet make awful noises when flushed and sink taps sprayed out very sporadically. No wi fi for 1 1/2 days. Food always cold Took 5 hours to get from airport to resort (Sunwing). Lobby very dark. Had to wait for very long time in the specialty restaurants. …
The only thing really going for this resort is the food. It’s old and run down and definitely to small for the amount of people they book. There’s not enough chairs at the pool or beach, like a 1 to 10 ratio, restaurants to small and waits are long, only resort I’d be to where you wait in line to get into the buffet. The rooms are run down and falling apart but the beds are soft. The pools are old and crumbling everywhere but clean. It would be a nice resort if it got a facelift. I knew it wasn’t a 5 star but I’d rank it at a 2.5. We made the most out of our vacay but if definitely was not worth the money we paid and would never come back or recommend it to anyone.
This place is ok. If you're expecting a 5 star resort for this price, you're going to be disappointed. The rooms we had are outdated, but functional. The pool areas are nice, but not phenomenal. Strange layout takes some time to get used to. The beach is typical for the area with rocks and seaweed, but still very nice. The food is where they are really lacking. The buffet for breakfast and lunch is very good but the dinner restaurants are not good at all. I'm not saying you shouldn't stay here. My family and I had a great time. But just don't expect too much, lol. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. If you can get a great deal like we did, it's a decent place for a getaway.
Sunscape Akumal is a nice place to stay, especially if you have small children. There are tons of pools and even an entire separate section called Dino Land with pools and play equipment for little kids. If you are a frequent traveler to all inclusive locations, you’ll probably find this towards the bottom of the list. If you don’t have much to compare it to, you’ll probably think this place is amazing. The grounds are beautiful, with lots of fountains and lush greenery. They work constantly to keep the grounds looking good. They are also doing the best they can with the seaweed, but they can’t help that. I understand it’s bad pretty much all along this part of the Mexican coast lately. There was tons of seaweed along the beach, and it made the beach area stink. Not their fault, but something to consider if you love laying on the beach. Some thing that is in their control is the amount of chairs they have. It’s not even close to enough. People were out at five and 6 AM claiming chairs. That’s not our idea of a good time so we just took a chance every day. There were a few places we couldn’t get any chairs at all. Our room (4145) was in horrible disrepair. The cover to the bathroom light switch kept falling off. Not that big a deal, except when it fell off, there were exposed wires. Our sliding glass patio door would not easily open. Probably the worst issue was that the shower and toilet both leaked, so there was constantly standing water in our bathroom. The day we arrived our room smelled of sewage, but we weren’t in our room other than to drop off our suitcases and change so we didn’t think much of it. When we returned that night to shower, we realized the sewer was backing up into our shower. We called the front desk multiple times, and I even submitted a maintenance request through the app. It was several hours before this was taken care of. There was actually feces in our shower. The man at the front desk (Alexis) was not apologetic at all, and was borderline rude about it. After the second hour of waiting for someone to come and fix the shower, I went back to the front desk again and demanded a new room. All this time we can’t use our shower and our room stinks too high heaven. At that point it was about 10 o’clock and we were finally moved to a different room for the night. The TV didn’t work and the mini bar was empty in this room, but we didn’t care, we just wanted to shower and go to bed. The next morning we were able to go back to our own room, and the sewage issue was gone, however, the toilet and the shower continued to leak every day. Our kids who were traveling with us, had a room on the second floor and they didn’t have any of these issues. There were plenty of good things, however. There’s a cute little café where you can get a nice coffee drink and snacks 24 hours a day . Noeli in the cafe was the best! The food was pretty good as well. It’s nice that you don’t have to make reservations and it’s just first come first serve, but we did have a decent wait every night. The entertainment staff is also great and led some fun activities throughout the week. Overall, we had a lot of fun, but I would not return to this resort.…
My partner and I visited the Sunscape Akumal resort for one week during March Break. We usually go on cruises and hadn't been to an all-inclusive for some time. Here's our experience: Pros: - Small resort, which made everything easily accessible. - There were multiple areas from which we could see the ocean, such as restaurants, the infinity pool, Sun Club terrace, and even our room. The beauty of these views cannot be overstated and had a significant impact on our overall experience. - The staff worked hard to provide consistent service and create memorable experiences, such as the Fire show and Oscar night. - The Mexican restaurant was by far the best one on the resort, and we found the food to be quite tasty. Not so great: - As other reviewers mentioned, there weren't enough loungers. We brought our own Helinox chairs, which helped, but we noticed that many loungers were cleared out by early afternoon so we were not too inconvenienced by the chair shortage - The resort wasn't the cleanest, but given its 3.5-star rating, it was to be expected. We suggest bringing slides to wear inside the room since the tiled floors were sandy. - The sargassum seaweed was out of control during our stay, and the staff worked tirelessly to clear the beach. However, it continued to come ashore. - With the exception of the Mexican restaurant, the other restaurants were just average. The resort is showing its age, but it had beautiful beach views and consistent service, which made for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.…
Just returned from a nine day vacation at Sunscape Akumal. We booked our room in the Sun Club section and it was definitely worth the upgrade! The staff and the food at all the a la carte restaurants was very good! The buffet was also very good. Snorkeling is great!! Lots of fish and we also saw rays and urchins. We celebrated our anniversary at the Olive Branch restaurant and Edwardo (the chef) and Amado (our waiter) prepared an amazing lobster dinner and a special dessert for us which was absolutely amazing!! The staff at this resort are all incredible.
We booked our vacation at this resort and after reading the reviews I was a bit nervous due to the overwhelming negative reviews that I had read. I went into the vacation reminding myself to make my own judgements and boy was I glad I did. As soon as we arrived the staff could not have been more attentive and accommodating. We booked a sunclub room and I would definitely recommend doing so. The rooms were great, they restock the mini fridge every day, you can order room service, there is a rooftop bar with plunge pools and chairs, and you get to eat breakfast at Portofino which I liked better than the buffet. The pools were great and the ocean was gorgeous. There was lots of seaweed but the employees worked all day to try to keep it to a minimum. There were plenty of bars to go to and you never waited long for a drink. The food was pretty good. The Olive Branch and Portofino were our favorite restaurants. The food was always good, maybe not the best food I’ve ever had in my life but I never had anything bad and never got sick. They don’t do dinner reservations but we never waited longer than a half hour to be seated. Most nights we didn’t wait at all. My husband and I woke up at about 730 each morning and went down and put towels and bags to reserve our chairs at the pool/beach before getting breakfast and never had trouble getting a spot in the area we want. Could the place use a little renovation/sprucing up? Maybe! But I never thought anything was dirty or grossly worn down. Overall I would definitely book this resort again. We had a wonderful time and thank the staff most of all, they were absolutely incredible!…
The hotel grounds are beautiful. The staff is so fun Sergio entertained us daily in the pool and dancing in the evenings. The Coco coffee shop is open 24/7 which is awesome they have snacks as well. Noelei is so delightful and made our coffees perfect daily. The food was really good. We also changed requested to be upgraded to the adults SunClub and Sophia was amazing and so helpful! I had a massage from Claudia and she was perfect and it was the best massage ever. We traveled each day to all the pools and enjoyed them all Sip and Dip, Family fun pool and the Sun Club roof top! The beaches we not the best as the seaweed is horrible and they did the best they could but it is unseasonably out of hand. We enjoyed the evenings in the lobby with all the different types of entertainment and you didn't have to make reservations to eat at the restaurants. We had a good time! …
I want to be as fair as possible with my review, so I'll include both the pros and the cons. Pros The resort is beautiful from an esthetic point of view. I like modern and the views with the white building and blue/green water is really dramatic and beautiful. I have never stayed at a resort so close to the ocean, it's really unbelievable. Overall, very friendly staff. I make it a point of tipping a usd for every drink. Cons The biggest deal breaker is that there are so few beach chairs on the beach and around the adult pool. The adult pool had 14 chairs, that 2 families had for pretty much all of our stay minus 2 days. It makes a vacation far more stressful than it should be, every day waking up at 7am to run out and hopefully get a chair. Even on the beach it was hard to find an available chair, the gentleman (Edgar?) is very helpful but he can only work with limited resources. This chair issue alone is a huge deal breaker. Food is very average. The buffet doesn't serve pork bacon only turkey bacon., which is supper disappointing. Buffet or the pool grill are the only lunch options - it's gets boring. There is little change up at the buffet. The buffet cooks a wide variety of meats as you wait and I do like the Mexican dishes. Restaurants are decent, salads are very sparse to the point why bother. I liked the pizzas, steak and mashed potatoes. Tikki Taco was bad - we left after having one bite of the chicken tacos which were some reason rolled like cigars with no veg - super dry chicken. I was disappointed they didn't replenish the beer in the rooms. The beds were really hard and uncomfortable. There was a loud noise coming from our toilet at night. It would go away and come back. There isn't roo much night life option, but I'll be honest we were happy to have a few cocktails in the lobby and go to bed. I was hoping there would be a bar with stools around it where people could stand around and socialize with each other. The way the lobby is set-up, it doesn't allow for groups to socialize with each other. I also don't like the kids pool in such close proximity to the adult pool. Sorry if you have kids, but the kids were coining over and joining in the adult games which threw off how you can play the game. I definitely would pay attention to where the kids pool is located next time. I go somewhere. Also, when we arrived a gentleman who works for the hotel asked if we would be interested in seeing Breezes, he said we would get free admission to Tulum as part of the 'thank you'. I asked if it was a time share pitch and was told it wasn't. We went and of course, it was wasted half a day with 5 different sales ppl coming and trying to close the deal with us. We said no each time and were finally allowed to go, but we felt like we were second class citizens at that point on. The taxi was included, took us to Tulum and then we find out its only to get into the shopping area not the ruins. The ruins cost more and it's in pesos, we only had usd - we went to the bank they asked for a passport, my sister only had a copy of hers, as Air Canada advises not to bring your original with you when sight seeing. We had to leave and then pay a lot more to go back. It's better to purchase thru the Air Canada rep if that's who you flew with - they give discounts. So as you can read a lot more cons than pros. …
