I am really glad I decided to base my stay in Akumal for my time in the Yucatan. It is 30 minutes to the Tulum area and 30 to Playa Del Carmen. Those other places are bigger, not so attractive cities. Akumal is a small beach community with gated access at night. Most of the tourist activity is limited to the front of the road, so you don't really have to deal with that. As for the hotel, I had a nice second story room with a hammock on the balcony. The beachfront is a nice plus, but the beaches in Akumal Bay overall are pretty rocky. You have to pick and choose carefully where to enter the ocean. Once you get several meters off shore, the rocks will disappear, but getting in and out can be tricky. This is a good value and community to pick for those that don't want to interact with the busy tourist areas.

We were only here for one night. Great location but the seaweed was very bad in front of the hotel so not able to really enjoy the beach front because of the smell. Room was small, shower pressure ok. Very friendly staff.

So we rented bicycles for $8 a day, and we returned the bikes (7:45 and rented at 6:00 pm for 2days) and were charged an extra $12 1/2 a day during a slow season. When we asked why the attendant was rude and became upset when we questioned him. Just a heads up because usually when it’s slow (or even when it’s not) I never encounter this type of service. It’s generally a bit off in this area. Perhaps the guy was just in a bad mood or wasn’t happy with his job. Renters beware of the other policies if you’re renting for a full day. Maybe go somewhere else.

The hotel is located half a Km north of the main Akumal village, away from the new 'mega' all inclusive resorts, in a quiet 'half moon' bay. When they say it is on the beach, it is right on he beach. When booking this hotel, we just booked a basic room. After a couple of days, although the standard room was fine, overlooked the sea and beach, for a 2 week stay, it was a bit on the small side. So after enquiring, we upgraded to a ground floor 2 bedroom apartment for the last 10 days. Superb. Although there is no on site restaurant or pool, these amenities are available just a few meters up the beach. Although having a car is not an essential while staying at this location, I would recommend one. Being able to visit all the local ruins, cenotes', restaurants and if you can find them, 'public' beaches, make it a lot easier. One note. During our stay, the seaweed that has been causing a problem throughout the Caribbean was prevalent in the bay. Despite heroic efforts by the locals to clear the stuff, next day it was back again. Hopefully this is just a seasonal thing and will be cured before long.

Thanks for your helpful review of Del Sol. We are glad you got to upgrade to one of the more spacious units during your stay. Half Moon Bay really is a nice little secret in amongst the large resorts in the area! We hope to see you again in the future.

Our overall experience was very positive. We stayed in one of the 2 BR/1 bath condos. The locations is very convenient -- our porch was right on the beach. The condo was well equipped wit A/C in every room and enough kitchen stuff to make diner as well as have toast/muffins for breakfast. The front desk staff was very pleasant. I think we had a better experience over staying in one of the mega all-inclusives, but it depends on what you are looking for. The location is good (but would highly recommend renting a car). Parking for our unit was right in front. There are several restaurants within walking distance. The snorkeling on the lagoon side of the area was very good (separate fee to get in). We swam/snorkeled from our unit, but did not go to the paid area of Akumal beach (looked nice, but didn't have time). We felt very safe in the area. -- Know before you go -There is a lot of seaweed on the beach. It was cleaned off every day, but there was still seaweed. Didn't hate it, but might be unpleasant to some. - Little bugs (gnat sized) are everywhere, especially by the screen door and around the kitchen area. Annoying, but not awful. We had to keep everything in the fridge. - Long time to get hot water. The water heater must be miles away. Needed to run the shower for a long time before the water got hot. Once hot, there was plenty of water. - Weird bathroom with no shower curtain. Only one of us could use the bathroom at a time, and the floor ended up getting flooded no matter what we did. Ended up using a beach towel to sop up all the water. - The swimming pool is small and a ways down the beach Overall, I would highly recommend Del Sol as a nice balance of local/convenience.
