We enjoyed our stay at ABBWR and are planning to return next year. The staff are super friendly and worked hard to address the guests needs. The food was good, not outstanding, but the presentation made each dish look amazing. We ate in the restaurants each night and the buffet for breakfast and lunch. The evening meals ran a bit slow at times and I wish they didn't take so long. Our favorite was the Kooben Gourmet. The room was clean and we did not have any issues with hot water etc. The beach here is nice, but rocky in places, and the sargassum is ever present but the staff work daily to keep it picked up. It is cleaned more frequently in front of building 1 and 2, not as much down at the rockier beach by building 3 and 4. The water was a bit murky when we were there, so the snorkeling was not as good as it could have been, but other guests reported seeing turtles, sting rays and even octopus right at the resort. We enjoyed the evening bands. They do need to acquire additional lounge chairs, as there were not enough to go around for all the guests and the towel/chair reservation game was escalating to earlier and earlier in the morning. Most days the lounge chairs in front of our building (3) were all "occupied" by towels well before the sun even came up.

Thank you for the exceptional customer service! Alejandro, Holi, Wilbert, and many more! We saw turtles, stingrays, squid, etc. and had tons of fun playing volleyball, tennis, bags/cornhole, riding the beach waves, dancing, and playing in the pools. (sea turtle video attached)

Second visit, first was 2016. We had such an amazing, luxurious trip that we booked again for last month. We booked with TUI, we paid for extra space seats as I need space to move about in my seat due to a bad back, my husband is 6ft 3 and can’t sit comfortably in a standard seat. Checked with TUI two days before we flew to ensure the seats were deffo booked and they confirmed that we were travelling on their Dreamliner and the seats were all booked for us. On the morning of the flight, we left the hotel and whilst on the shuttle bus I received an email advising that they had changed the aircraft and provider to Wamos and we would not have the extra space seats or in flight entertainment. Obviously I was mortified as it was a ten hour flight which I knew would be painful and boring without any films or music to Listen to. We were so disappointed but sucked it up and got through the flight. We got to the hotel in Mexico late at night and found we had been upgraded to a penthouse suite. We got to the room through various corridors and saw that the condition of the hotel had deteriorated with patches of paint on walls and flakes and large pieces of ceiling on the floor and it looked all rather run down. The room was clean and we went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night and whilst walking in the dark to the toilet I slipped on water on the tiled floor. We put the light on and found that whilst raining, the rain had poured through the roof patio and poured down the internal stairs and flooded the room. We contacted reception and they told us that there were no other rooms available for a couple of days so we put towels down everywhere to stop us from Slipping. The air con unit was so noisy that we couldn’t have it on so complained about that too. Went to bed that night in the same room and woke again in the night to water pouring through the room ceiling. The ceiling started to flake and come away onto the floor and there was water flooding the floor. By this time we were hacked off and again went to reception. They said they could find another room which we could have later that day. We waited all day without access to a room Or our things. They gave us a room which wasn’t a penthouse it was in building 1. The room was ok, old and tired decor and not cleaned to a good standard but as least we were dry and safe. After a night there we couldn’t get in or out of the room as the door had broken. It took them hours to fix it. The door was so poorly fitted and there was a good inch of light around it at nighttime from the hallway lights. You could literally hear everything outside and in the next room. The air con again was too noisy so we had to switch it off although we suffered with being too hot during the night. They offered us a spa treatment each and a bottle of wine in the restaurant. We also complained about not being able to Reserve a sun bed near the beach if we got there after 6:30 am every morning, it was totally ridiculous and not what you want to do so early in the mornings of your holiday but it was that or have nowhere to sit as outside beach seating was limited.so after another day or so they gave us access to their fidelity club where beds are in an area away from the main beach seating area and beds are reserved by staff for specific guests. This was ok but we were still so disappointed about the room and the poor state of the hotel compared to how it was the last time we visited. The buffet restaurant was good, hot food with a lot of variety to choose from. The serving staff were amazing although the reception staff didn’t have high standards and couldn’t really be bothered with helping guests. The grounds are beautifully kept but cleaning bins and addressing litter wasn’t happening as much as it should have. We had a bin next to us on the beach that was full for four days. The mini bar in the fridge in our room had four cans of pop and two cans of beer. One small packet of crisps and one small snack bar of chocolate. Not even one each for a couple sharing the room, seems a bit mean to me. The pool was dirty so I only swam in it once. The ladies toilets next to the lobby bar was leaking so there were towels wrapped around the base of the toilets. There was a German Rep from TUi who visited the hotel however he told us to come back at another time And there were at least 8 people waiting to see him When this was all going on so we didn’t bother. We contacted TUI via their app and emailed them but really it was painful as we gauged that we spent probably about three days of our holiday trying to sort the issues out etc and I didn’t want to waste any more time speaking to a rep who probably wouldn’t have been interested anyway. All in all it was a horrid time and I will never go back there. This hotel is no longer a 5 star hotel and should not be advertised as such. Photos attached

My 33rd visit to the wonderful place. We celebrated a friend's birthday and also were honored by being invited to their celebration of día de Muertos. What an experience. To see the respect that is paid to family members who have passed is humbling. As always staff members Jesus our fedility concierge is always #1 in his service. Wilbert in the buffet greater our group everything with a place to sit and wonderful service. Adrianna always a breath of fresh air in the buffet. Marco is always on top of our wants and Holly is the most gracious hostess. German the beach manager was always on top of any needs that were had on the beach. Adial keeps activities going and is willing to jump in and be a helping hand on any games we are doing. Last but not least philpe, Wilbert, Climente the world's best bartenders. I can't ever put into words how grateful I am to have found this resort years ago. Alejandro the Fedility manager has become a great asset as well. There are to many people and reasons to list as to why we return.

The food is excellent. Lovely deserts. Able to eat formal dining each night without reservations or hassle. The yoga instructor’s are top notch and able to cater to specific area of the body upon request. Multiple classes to choose from to fit everyone level and schedule. Really appreciate the ecosystem efforts put in by the resort. From educational classes, roping off turtle nests to avoid damage and tracking their progress. Mr. A Milan is very involved and professional biologist.

Returned for my second visit with my 9 year old daughter - this time with my husband! We tried the garden suite this time and loved it. We were right by the Bldg 3 pool and it was great - especially with a kid. We loved being able to come and go easily from the room without using the loud main door in the early and late hours. Ambience and staff everywhere are wonderful. So welcoming and great to talk with. We got lucky with the seaweed and it was only bad for a few of our 10 days. In 2018 it was much worse. The best part for us continues to be the wonderful kids club which many people ask about on forums. But understand that it is different than other places and that as a parent you have a responsibility to engage and introduce your child to the leaders. And when you do - it's wonderful. They would find us every morning and chat about the plan for the day. They would do great activities with our daughter - crafts, paddle board rides and even a special dinner one evening with a few kids. Gloria and Priscilla were the best. It was surprising how many kids weren't joining in but likely partially due to Covid concerns. Re: Food - well we are pretty good cooks ourselves but when we travel we aren't horribly picky. Great flavours, fresh grilled foods, the pizza and most of our a la carte meals were great. Our daughter preferred the "adult" meals to the kid options. Drinks were great and a special mention of Carlos at "Sushi" bar in the evenings - he's a magician with cocktails and using the most wonderful ingredients. He made our evenings very memorable. That all said - I do feel the snack bar offerings during the day are pretty disappointing for a resort of this caliber. More BBQ meats and veg and fish would be great and more taco options etc would be good that are available for longer than 1 hr around the pool. The chicken wings are great but often disappear in minutes. Also, we hope they go back to the nice burger dinners there again in the future. The only other low point is the main pool - it seems to need a major refresh on the surfacing and the water treatment. It also seemed low and could have used much more water. It would be great to have some nice loungers around the pools in addition to the Bali beds. Not a big complaint but slightly disappointing - it's a race every day and seems like a lot of unused space. I wanted to add that we rented a car (4 days) easily in Tulum at America Car rental and just took the Collectivo back and forth for pick up and return. So easy. Explored many cenotes, Tulum and the Akumal Nature Reserve - the best 1/2 day of our trip! We'll be back again in 2023 and 2024! Can't wait.

I booked this hotel based on the 5 star reviews on Tripadvisor. I’d had some reservations ahead of time hearing about tired rooms but figured there must be something special with the great reviews? We arrived late after a delayed flight and there was no welcome or help with cases. The rooms are really tired! Certainly not the standard I’d expect for the price paid. The rooms are very plain, mostly clean - just don’t look around the ceiling and window frames! The fixtures were old and rusting in places. The window in the bathroom wouldn’t close and the patio doors could easily be opened from the outside despite supposedly being locked. A key issue was the lack of privacy in the room. There is an open plan bedroom and bathroom with nothing to divide them. I was travelling with my adult son and we had to get dressed in the toilet for privacy which was not great. This could be addressed with a simple curtain. The beds were comfortable which was a positive. We had a garden room and loved the terrace which had great views. We had some cool visits from friendly iguanas. The food was good in the a la carte restaurants and we could always find something to eat in the buffet - though it would have been nice to have some special items like roast meats, whole fish etc. The service overall was good, especially the ladies serving drinks around the pool and beach who were super helpful and friendly. In the buffet and sometimes at the bars there seemed to be a two tiered service depending on whether particular servers thought they’d get tips, perhaps based on accents - ironic as we tipped well when we did get good service. The only time we had bad service was both times we visited the rodizio restaurant - once we had to wait ages for food when others that came in 20mins after us were halfway through their main. The second time we only got half of the main course rodizio items with the waiter offering no resolution. There was a very limited to no selection of branded alcohol and bars/restaurants ran out of things often or just wouldn’t get what you asked for e.g no red wine left in restaurant, no baileys substitute. There was a significant issue with Sun lounger reservations which was super frustrating. By 7.30qm most of the loungers had been reserved with some then not being occupied for most of the day. This was throughout the resort and meant that there were days when we couldn’t get a lounger. The activities on offer were great with the wellness/yoga offering and stand up paddle boarding. We were really pleased with the conservation efforts at the hotel. There were a number of turtle nests which the staff at the hotel really looked after with nightly patrols. We really enjoyed the turtle class led by Alejandro Millan which was really informative. More of these would be great. The standout selling point for the hotel was the beach which was amazing. The rooms were steps from the beach which was kept clean and beautiful. There was great sealife and we saw some big turtles amongst the sea grass. Overall we had a good time but probably wouldn’t return as we didn’t feel the quality was commensurate with the price point in comparison with other similarly priced all inclusive resorts in the riviera maya.

So I travelled to this beautiful resort for my second visit - On arrival which was 10th November 2022 at 9pm Mexican time: I was with my parents there was no greeting, no welcome drink, nobody asking if we wanted a drink or food, we weren't advised of restaurants being open or where we could even get food on arrival! So I will start with the minor inconveniences first: 1) Needing to get up before 7am to be able to get a Cabana/Bed on the beach, some people whilst I was there were getting up at 4:30am to get beds which is insane!! 2) The A La Carte's to me were not as good as my previous visit - I visited the Mexican once, Gourmet once and the Lima once. Overall my A La Carte experience was not great as I did not eat any of the food and ended up in the buffet instead. 3) Room service - So from previous experience room service was great you could even get steak and chips. We ordered room service the first night we got there and were not impressed due to the food being cold. Moving on from above though I loved my visit! Some people who stood out for me personally were: 1) Adiel - in the animation team from meeting him last time I stayed was nice to catch up and the one evening he was working he taught me how to Salsa, which is a lot harder than it looks haha! It was nice for him to come up and speak when he had the time as it showed he really valued his guests, he is an asset to Akumal and due to his friendliness I will revisit here. 2) German as per usual was amazing - he is more a friend than staff to me and my family always makes sure everything is ok. Do feel for him though as there is not enough sunbeds for all the guests and he has the difficult job if people reserve sunbeds and don't come back in an hour removing their belongings and then having to deal with people's complaints. 3) Karen & Jared & Miguel - Animation team who made my holiday always making sure I was happy but also came up to me and spoke to me about my stay again making me feel valued as a guest. I understand they have work to do which they do amazingly however is nice when the staff come up and speak to you makes it a more personable experience. 4) Daniella - Buffet Receptionist - Wow Daniella was amazing the smile she gives when she sees you in the morning and at lunch time is so special. 5) Aracelli - Supervisor in main buffet - Again such a lovely lady nothing you ever asked her was too much amazing customer service. 6) Alejandro - Reception Manager - Alex is amazing as per usual he was there on my previous visit and knows my family well as they have visited 4 times. He couldn't do enough to make you feel welcome and any issues we had were resolved quickly. Feedback Time: 1) Personally I feel the evening entertainment has gone from a relaxing and tranquil environment to what felt like trying to get people to party and drink due to this I never sat downstairs to listen. I miss the animation team being down and teaching people to Salsa or quizzes which they have had previously. Even the guy who used to play Violin and Saxophone are no longer there and was a bit disappointed with the evening entertainment. I do hope that the hotel takes this into consideration as some of the bands that come in were playing electric guitars not very relaxing! 2) I believe there should be a rule that people can only put towels on beds from 7am as no one wants to get up at 5am to reserve a bed. 3) Having waterproof covers for the Cabana's - when I woke up on a number of occasions where it had rained the night before the Cabana's were soaked meaning people who were putting towels down within 1 hour the towels were soaked then having to be replaced which there was a towel shortage whilst I was there anyway! 4) Not enough beds/cabana's - I feel as though people are reserving beds at silly O'clock because there is not enough beds for everyone in the hotel so if all beds taken some guests have nowhere to sit. 5) Not that i'm much of a drinker anyway but there was some alcohol shortages but I do believe this is because more guests are drinking until they're very drunk which again never seen on my last visit and takes the relaxing and wellness side away from the hotel. 6) So for people who visit this resort to see the turtles unfortunately there is now a group of workers who charge people $20 per person to see Turtles to make this worthwhile for their customers they are feeding the turtles daily which means sadly you may not see the turtles unless you swim passed secrets to where the fishing boats are! 7) Lastly on departing the hotel I was not given a wooden turtle which I did on previous visit which was a shame as a little souvenir to end the trip. I know there is a lot here but I do not want to discredit the staff because all staff are amazing but from my 1st visit to my 2nd there was a big difference and I hope Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort reverts back to it's tranquil environment.

ABBWR is our favorite. The beach is incredible but the service is what sets this place apart. Our favorite…. Adalinda. She took care of us EVERY day. Always make sure we had water, Mexican water (tequila). She was the most kind attentive and we can’t wait to come back to see her!
