We were looking for an overnight break and this worked out very well for us. The resort had excellent hiking and biking trails which we used. Montebello town was a short walk away and had quaint shops. The finest part was sitting by the giant fireplace having drinks and snacks and reading or playing board games.
My experience at the Fairmont Montebello was incredibly unpleasant and I will not be returning. I booked 2 nights in a renovated river view suite. Upon check in, I was told that my suite was “under maintenance” and we had been moved to a different suite. As a consolation, they gave us $60 hotel credit/night. A measly compensation for the horrible room we ended up in. Our view was of a neighbouring roof and we learned a family of birds lived there since they woke us up at 4am. None of the patios were open despite the good weather so we had no outdoor dining options. We decided to cut our visit short and left the next day. The only positive experience is that there was no difficulty in cancelling our second night. The room was ridiculously overpriced and the $60 hotel credit we received didn’t offset the difference in price between a river view room and a room with zero view whatsoever. A waste of both my time and money.…
My wife and I stayed at Chateau Montebello for a second time May 13 - 15, 2022. First stay was a golf trip (they have a wonderful course across the road). This second stay was for the weekend marriage of our son. This hotel has history and does a good job of maintaining its rustic charm. The staff could not have been more polite/helpful. Montebello has everything you could ask for; Pools, Walking Trails, Bike Rentals, Marina and River Access, Outdoor Fire Pit Rentals, Indoor and Outdoor dining and a Lobby like no other. What we didn't realize is that Chateau Montebello is also dog friendly so no need to leave this family member at home. We will be returning for another stay. This place has grown on us!
We had a nice room with a river view. The bathroom was spacious and updated with a nice rain shower. The room was a good size and the king bed was very comfortable. We took a walk through the woods and by the river and saw a couple of beavers. It was so relaxing to sit on the benches by the river. The food was very good in the restaurants too.
We arrived on April 26th left on April 28th. Check in was easy. Room was nice but the mattress needs to be replaced..very lumpy and sagged. The pool was closed and so were all the restaurants but 1. The breakfast was very good, service was excellent. What I liked about this hotel was that it was within walking distance to the town of Montebello, 15- 20 min walk. Several good bistros. I had to request maid service on my second day, which they weren't too happy to do. They cited covid, but that doesn't wash as at both the Chateau Frontenac and the Chateau Malbaie provided us with maid service without requesting. It was quite a cold day and the maid left the room window open upon exiting. When we got back to the room the temperature was 13celsius. Would I return to this hotel..probably not. I preferred the Malbaie and the Frontenac.…
staying in Margaret Thatcher's room was legacy for us and its close proximity to the conference wing and the restaurant made the schedule work very well. our night walks on the property were so amazing. then the day time walks were great , walking up to the chateau museum was enchanting. was able to have an amazing refresh weekend mind body soul and spirit. Praise God.
Heading to the Chateau Montebello we had high expectations. Overall still impressive. The Food was very good. The environment was impressive. However the obvious disrepair and lack of maintenance was painfully shocking. Then NO HOUSEKEEPING... or to be told after one day "you could request housekeeping" didn't say that in the premium price of the room. Then when we asked for clean coffee cups, they delivered them but left the dirty ones in the room... AMATEUR HOUR!!!! We will NOT be using this location again, and Fairmont gets a black eye for reputation out of this.
Loved the river and how calming it was. The great fireplace was exceptional to see and to sit by it. Really enjoyed watching two beavers playing in the river at dusk one night. The restaurant was excellent and it is expensive but we felt you got what you paid for and it was a date night. We also enjoyed the whirlpool. We were there off season for a conference which was excellent. Family Life Canda marriage conference so we did not get to try out any of the outdoor activities. We did really enjoy the outdoor fire pits that were set up at night.
From the outside it's not that impressive (rustic charm but nonetheless a bit underwhelming). However the interior with the 6 sided towering fireplace, makes one think they've entered a viking great hall! Truly romantic and inspiring. So many great spots on multiple floors to gather either in a quiet corner or to hang out with your group, play games, etc. All with the ambience of the stone fireplace to charm and conjure up a different time and place. Great live music in the evenings too. One can easily complain about the aged rooms and floors however you can choose to see it as charming character and be transported back in time and embrace the sloping floors and somewhat awkward layouts. The cleaning fee per night added on to the room rate (along with all the other taxes and fees) seems odd considering there was no room cleaning at all during our stay. We did see people occasionally wiping down chairs in the common space. We walked through the tunnel to the pool area, quaint and fun, but the pools were closed and we didn't end up reserving time in a hot tub this trip. We also walked the grounds to town which was lovely, would have enjoyed a tour at the Papineau historic site but it was closed. The restaurant menu (only one was open during our stay) didn't really appeal so we only ate a small lunch on site, it was fine but nothing special and considering the prices didn't seem worth it. No mention of gluten free on the menu either but the poutine was gluten free. (Bistro Montebello nearby was very good with reasonable prices too and a great wine selection and lots of gluten free options as well). Overall a wonderful, romantic weekend, albeit expensive.…
If you keep your expectations low and don't expect any special for staying at a "Fairmont" chain hotel you'll be happy. The architecture is stunning and after you get past the structure you'll find a tired hotel. Lots of of signs of age and wear an tear. The rug in our room is bubbling off the floor in some places, and the room could use a fresh coat of paint as there are lots of wear marks and chipped paint. The 'rustic' furniture around the fireplace in the lobby is authentically rustic and some pieces are incredibly uncomfortable. Day1: we had to call to ask for the wall mirror in the bathroom to be fixed as it was falling off the wall and didn't work. Its now back on the wall but doesn't work. We also had to ask for a cover for the couch in our room as its covered with disgusting stains. We called the restaurant to make the mandatory dinner reservations, only after a few tries and no answer we left a message. When we arrived for dinner they didn't have our reservation - the staff needed to have a 'discussion' which was unprofessional and unwelcoming especially as the restaurant had very few patrons. Day 2: We woke up at 7.30/8am to the sound of the hallway being vacuumed for at least 20 mins straight. The walls are pretty thin here as we can hear constant noise from the floor above us and kids running the hallways. In the afternoon we found that our drinks has all exploded in the mini fridge. Its unclear to me what the daily $35 resort fee is for. Its hard to find what is open and available...the answer is not much and especially not anything special The pool is closed for 'renovations' something to do with the ceiling needing repair. However under this ceiling is not only over the pool but also the hot tubs. The hot tubs are open but the pool is not. The whispers are that the pool has been closed for over a year for these 'repairs' that never occur and there are no plans in the near future to do them. This hotel should not be listed as having a pool as it is misleading. If you plan on using the hot tub, be advised that you have to call in advance to try to book a time slot. There are only 2 hot tubs with limited availability for all hotel guests to try to use. So the daily resort fee of $35 may just be for your use of a tennis or squash court and walking along the river since may of the other walking trails are closed. Not worth the $$ for what you're getting. Having stayed at Westin's, Hyatt's, Delta's, Marriott's and other competing brands across the country I would say that those other hotels have the same amenities that are here except they have working pools and don't change an additional daily fee. The last time I stayed at somewhere with a stained couch, chipped paint, worn out rugs, unreliable fridges was decades ago at a roadside motel.…
