We had a great visit and made the most of our short time here. We were not sure about staff & guests following Covid protocols so we only stayed 1 night.
The staff were polite, considerate, and Covid protocols were followed. We opted to to takeout and eat all our meals lakeside and staff were more than accommodating. The beach area is very small but functional and the lake was still really warm on labour day. We made use of the SUP and ensured it was cleaned before and after use.
We stayed in the main inn on the 2nd floor facing the main walkway into the building and you can hear the conversations by the fireside (the only place that was not well-distanced). Our room was small but clean and it was fine for us as we spent most of our time outside.
Food was a bit pricey but everything was delicious and portions were more than what we expected. We pre-paid breakfast and it was the best idea as we were able to order off the menu, and would have costed more to order it individually.
Overall, really happy with our visit and would definitely return.

We checked in Aug.9-12 we were able to bring our Boston Terrier with us (very important) it was a little extra $$ we also brought our pontoon boat and docked right near our room.(They even had our name on the dock) that was extra $$ but you can't truly see all the sites on Lake Jo without a boat.
We ate at the restaurant and the meal was very good and the staff were very friendly and helpful (all the staff throughout the Inn).We stayed in Cedarwood and our room was very nice and comfortable we enjoyed having a larger fridge in the room and the windows were big so we had a nice view .I would come back here anytime it was such a nice vacation very relaxing and comfortable

I will preface by saying that if you are looking for accommodations that are luxurious and flashy, this is probably NOT the place for you (although I'm not convinced you still wouldn't appreciate it). If you're looking for a rustic and authentic Muskoka experience with excellent food, service, gorgeous surroundings, and overall great value, then you will love this place. We visited earlier in the summer with our entire family and everyone raved about it. The food was delicious and priced reasonably - even better than what we were expecting after having read some very positive reviews online. This was extremely refreshing as we have had opposite experiences at other resorts in the Muskoka area (Touchstone, JW Marriott). We were very pleased that we were able to access a tennis court, kayaks, canoes, and even bikes at no extra charge. The rooms are cozy and the beds are very comfortable (we stayed in a room in the Maplewood building). The water frontage you get access to on Lake Joe is unbeatable. And what really pushed our experience over the top was how attentive and friendly the staff were - I'm seriously baffled by some of the other reviews that were recently posted on here.

We will definitely be back again. Hoping we can book a room for a night or two before the summer is over.

We booked the Sherwood Inn for our 40th wedding anniversay based on their web site and pictures which I found out were not realistic. First off forget the pictures they show for the rooms because if you do not read the fine print in the description you will think you have a lakeview when in fact you do not. We did have a lakeview, if you could see through the trees but others that were there were not so fortunate. The Maplewood building's first impression was terrible with broken furniture, debris and garbage strewn in the entrance way. In the hallways there are missing pieces of trim and carpeting that needed to be cleaned. The windows were filthy. The Inn and the room, we booked a premium maplewood, were not clean and very tired. Our door and our room was peppered with touch up paint that did not match, the balcony was filthy along with 5 holes punched into the side walls that were not repaired and there was insulation showing in various other holes in the wall.In all honesty the room needed a good cleaning and updating for what they charge. We also paid extra for 8 Muskoka beers to be delivered to our room on ice in a bucket when we arrived. What we found was a paper bag with four beers hanging on our door knob. Finally the A/C was not working and we were told this was an ongoing problem and they had run out of temporary A/C units to put in rooms. That was the last straw and the only positive was that they refunded all of our money and we then drove five hours home. If they do anything they must update thier web site with realistic pictures and room descriptions that are not misleading along with a good cleaning as the uncleaniness was not an overnight thing but a longer standing problem.
Jeff.

I would like to preface this review by saying that not ALL staff were rude, or poorly trained, but I would say that the vast majority were. Whilst staying at the inn not one person asked us how our stay was, or our room, or anything in regards to how the “vacation” was going. Staff would see us on the grounds and not even say hello. Our dinner servers were amazing one night, so we decided to return for breakfast the next morning. We sat ourselves after being told that someone would come along shortly to give us some menus. After 10-15 minutes two servers had gone in and out of the dining area FOUR times without so much as a hello. Let alone a menu or some water. And for some context, there was only ONE other table with guests. In total there were three servers and one table being served (not ours). I have never experienced this level of rude and incompetent customer service. It seemed as if we were being intentionally ignored. After confronting the staff about this they did not respond, even to apologize. The manager did very little to assuage us, and so we decided not to dine there for the rest of our stay. This incident was never followed up on by management, and upon checking out we were not even then asked by staff about how our stay was. In hindsight this “vacation” feels like a total waste of money. The location is beautiful granted, however the rooms are very outdated with stained furniture, our room was situated above a bonfire which got very loud with drunken guests until 12am, and of course the incredibly subpar customer service. It is a shame as the location is beautiful and the grounds have great potential, but the management and staff were enough to completely dissuade me from ever returning or spending my money here. This experience was very disappointing, and I would absolutely not recommend visiting this establishment and will not be recommending to friends.

We were very excited to holiday at the Sherwood Inn. After a year and a half
of lockdown and the fact that this property enjjoyed a positive reputation about the food, we were ready to relax and enjoy.

We chose a bed sitting cottage, as we were bringing our dog with us.
Upon arrival, we were very disappointed at the state of the cottage. It is in dire
need of some paint and the bathroom needs a total reno.
The location of the cottage, however, about ten steps from the lovely beach was ideal.

We could have put up with the general shabbiness of the cottage, if the food in the restaurant had been delicious, or even very good. It was not.

The first item we tasted, chicken wings and French fries were both undercooked.
We said nothing at the time, as we were tired from our drive and it was our first meal.

For our first dinner, we chose pan fried pickerel and trout with fresh vegetables.
Both kinds of fish were poached and totally bland. The vegetables were not hot.
The risotto with sea food was again a huge disappointment. The risotto was okay, with various clams, and shrimp decorating the plate. The seafood was cooked without any additional flavours, such as lemon juice or herbs. Totally bland.
The first morning I sent my bacon bacon back, as it was served almost raw.
We began eating out and snacking during the day, rather than having breakfast or lunch at the restaurant.
On the last night, after a Fawlty Toweresque serving of the wrong wine, and then the right wine served without a glass, we ordered asparagus soup.
It was cold, had a a piece of raw asparagus floating on top and contained some unidentifiable bits of green which were inedible.

Most of the servers, although pleasant, seemed disinterested in the fact that we did not like the food. They seemed inured to the situation.

Sherwood Inn is in need of a total refit. It is located in such a beautiful area, but relies on Lake Joseph and its charm to bring in the punters.

For the price, over $400.00 per night without food, it is selling on its previous reputation, and frankly is a ripoff.

We shall not return to Sherwood Inn.

all colours and view of the lake = Excellent

Everything else = Crappy, uncomfortable, cheap quality, poor service.

This is a dated hotel, that makes no effort to provide a good experience other than being in a great location. Best to go anywhere else in Muskoka where you'll get the same benefits and hopefully someplace that actually cares about hospitality.

The "Premium Room" we received was small, with a very lumpy uneven mattress we had to turn around just to be able to use. Missing little details that differentiate a cheap roadside motels to a supposed 4-star resort, such as having a decent sized floor mat at the entrance to our room (as it was the fall and your wet shoes are now right next to your bed - great to get your feet wet before getting under the covers).

Walls and floors are paper-thin. Could easily hear the guest in the next room snoring, and the guest above us walking around the room. I've stayed at variety of hotels, apartments, condos, old and new homes, cheap and expensive, and I have never been in a place where you could hear people upstairs so loudly. And it wasn't the guest's fault, you could tell he was just walking normally, not stomping around.

The absolute worst was dinner at Vintages restaurant. It's advertised as fine dining, in reality it's anything but. We arrived at 6pm, and it started off nice enough. As reservations are required, that means the staff have a good idea of who will be there, such as the large party of 20+ people who came and took over half the room. We could no longer have a simple conversation over dinner due to the noise. The host could have told us in advance or at least when we arrived that there would be a large party coming in shortly after us, so we could have decided whether or not to eat elsewhere.

When I spoke to the manager about it, he was somewhat apologetic, but made it seem as if they were taken by surprise that a large group made a reservation. I made sure to tell him that i doubt this was the first time this happened. This, more than everything else, showed how the entire staff is just coasting on the fact that they know the place will be booked due to its location, so they don't need to put in any effort.

Do yourself a favour and book ANYWHERE else where they'll likely make a bit of an effort to make your stay enjoyable.

We booked a 5 day family vacation with my husband and my elderly father and booked the rooms over a month ago. When I was here in July we had a relaxing holiday and so we booked 2 cottages with adjoining rooms for August so we could bring my dad . We selected the cottages specifically because they were close to the beach , adjoining and accessible for my father who needs a walker.
When we arrived we were told one room ( the more accessible room ) was no longer available as there was another guest in it and they planned my give my father another one. One that was not connected to mine and which had steep stairs and a sloped area that is dangerous to anyone with disabilities.
We were furious and expressed our extreme anger . The manager told us there was nothing he could do because he did not want to inconvenience the other guest by asking them to move. Really he chose to do nothing !!
I am disgusted with the attitude and blatant disregard for seniors and with those with disabilities . The resort gave away our room and took no responsibility at all for their mistake . The other guest we saw was not disabled and was not even asked to she would be ok to move .

This vacation was my dads first vacation since being social distanced for 5 months.
The managers arrogant, pompous and ignorant attitude and disrespectful decision ruined our vacation . The A 90th birthday celebration where we were all supposed to be in a connected cottage and celebrate.
I will never forgive this person or the horrible treatment we received as this resort .

Pros:
1. The grounds are great - peaceful and calm.
2. Staff do their best to help out with anything you need.
3. Tasty Breakfast.
4. Quick check in and check out.

Cons:
1. Cottages are super dated. We were in Birchwood West. Avoid!
2. Cottage walls are too thin and you can hear people in the other half of the cottage talk and much more.
3. The shower area in the Birchwood Cottage is gross.

Service Recovery:

1. We were upgraded to a 2 bed cottage right after I spoke to the General Manager for the remainder of our stay. The 2 bed cottages are dated but way better than what we were in initially. The bathrooms are cleaner.

Wondering why we were upgraded?

Keeping reading.

2. Breakfast charges were waived off - don't remember if this was for a day or two.

3. I was allowed to use the conference room for work calls, cause I could not take any calls in the cottage we were in.

If you are wondering why?

We could hear our neighbors getting busy with it!

Will Smith's gettin jiggy wit it would have been better.

Embarassing! Not the song but the other stuff.

The rating is for cottage.

The staff did what they could to help us.

I would come back if they refresh this dated yet charming property.

We spent 3 days at this Muskoka area Inn during October. The colour of the maple leaves was awesome. Our room was in the Cedarwood Building by the lake with wonderful views. A cosy fireplace with two comfortable upholstered chairs and a lake view made for a pleasant afternoon. Great hiking trails nearby helped to work off the great meals offered in the package deal. A four course dinner from a long list on the menu gives everyone a wide choice, The beef tenderloin was awesome and the carrot cheesecake was rich and delicious. Social distancing was encouraged and masks for indoors in the main Inn were required. We felt quite safe.

Tdotontario, our cottages and some of the Maplewood rooms have mini fridges but as mentioned above, in Maplewood there is an ice machine on the second floor and for the other rooms closer to the inn, our team is happy to fill your ice bucket at the bar. Just ask our servers or if before or after hours, the front desk will assist.

rkee, Thank you for your questions. At Sherwood Inn, there is a $20.00 per night resort amenity fee that includes a number inclusions including use of all of our waterfront equipment such as paddle boards, canoes, etc. I also includes the wireless internet, parking and even a 9 hole round of golf on one of our academy courses in Muskoka. Lake Joseph Golf Club's 9 hole academy is the closest to Sherwood only being a few minutes away by car or boat. You are certainly welcome to bring you own canoe as well. As for the fridge in your room. Breakfast and lunch items vary in price but a typical budget for breakfast would be $18 and lunch $15-22. Sample menus are available on our website. Not all Inn rooms have fridges. Typically the Inn suites have mini fridges but the typical Inn room does not have a mini fridge. Finally, although the resort is certainly adult oriented, children are more than welcome and typically enjoy the beach and activities as the beach is very child friendly. We hope to see you soon!

Children are welcome however there are not a lot of activities to keep them busy other than the beach. Our sister resort, Rocky Crest Golf Resort is a more family friendly property with lots to do for the kiddos. Thanks for reaching out! If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to call our reservations team at 1-866-844-2228.

Hi Dan, there is a nice beach that the kids can play on but to be honest, not very many children stay at Sherwood Inn. It is more adult oriented although children are more than welcome. Our sister property on the North End of the lake is more desirable for families. Check out Rocky Crest Golf Resort as it has kids camps, water toys, pools and large spacious suites, really perfect for families. I hope that helps
