Nice room, lovely breakfast The couple who run this place are super friendly. The room was nicely appointed and clean. Big breakfast, and you could sit on your own, or communally with other guests if you were up for a chat. Good value!

The hosts were so gracious and welcoming; The room was the most clean place we have ever stayed--would rival a hospital surgery suite! Breakfast was bountiful and healthy. The accomdations cheery and a very restful place to sleep!

We are delighted that you had a pleasurable stay with us. We haven't had the necessity to 'operate' in any of the rooms but it's good to know that we meet the standard !! Being able to sleep well is always a big benefit when spending days exploring our beautiful island and we're glad that we could offer that to you. We appreciate you taking the time to review us and thank you for that. Hopefully we will be able to welcome you back to Auld Farm Inn one day in the future.

We stayed four nights in the twin-bedded room above the lounge (four of the rooms are internal, four are accessed externally). The Scottish owners are friendly, knowledgeable about the area and informative, and needless to say these attributes are the key to their success and high TA ratings. We found the beds comfortable and liked the fact that our room had a double aspect (albeit we felt there was one chest-of-drawers too many and would have welcomed a comfy armchair instead!), and the en-suite shower room - although compact - served its purpose admirably. The other key element of a B&B is of course the breakfast, and this would seem to be an area where you can't please all of the people all of the time, especially given the pasting by another recent reviewer who bemoaned the absence of eggs... If there is a problem here then it may be because the owner is striving to offer something different each day (bearing in mind that quite a few guests seem to stay a number of nights), and that with so many guests [potentially] converging all at once she quite understandably wants to make something that can be prepared first thing and then kept warm without spoiling (rather than either being unable to cope in the rush or having to be constantly at the stove if service is more protracted). We certainly didn't see any evidence of the hot dish running out, but it is fair to say that it might not be to everyone's liking (eg capsicum peppers in a fritata). As it happens I myself didn't fancy any of the small pastries on offer, so it could be that on occasions one might feel the breakfast was a little light, but it certainly wasn't for want of effort and the fruit salad in particular was always well balanced and nicely prepared. So, whilst we would agree in that it would be nice to be able to order a bespoke cooked breakfast if desired, this certainly wasn't an option in any of other B&Bs we stayed in and is I think a little unrealistic given the number of rooms and the price point (ie it would probably need an extra pair of hands in the kitchen). So, even though I'm prapared to mark it down a tiny bit too, I'm still going to rate it as 'Excellent' overall as we felt it a nice place to stay!

Thank you for your gracious review, we appreciate you taking the time to comment. We have made a note of your observations, suggestions and comments and will look into how we might improve on breakfast, also of putting some plump cushions on the rocking chair to make it more comfy. Breakfast for the most part seems to work well for the vast majority of people and we are glad that you enjoyed our breakfast offerings over your four day stay. We hope that we will be able to welcome you back to Auld Farm Inn at some point in the future.

First, I want to say that the hosts are wonderful. For that reason, I'm sad to write this review. There are 2 main problems. 1) Strong smell of mildew in room. 2) Unsatisfactory breakfast. 1) I understand that this is an old house, and the hosts might try to use that excuse to explain the mildew. Doesn't fly. My husband and I have stayed in numerous B&Bs across Europe, the USA and Canada that were as old or far older than this one, and none of them had a mildew/mold issue. There is such a strong smell when we entered the room that we wanted to leave as soon as possible. 2) A hot breakfast was advertised. Hot breakfast means eggs etc. A good B&B will bring the breakfast plates to your table. However, I'm ok with a hot breakfast buffet if it includes the usual suspect/s. What we were given: small blueberry pancakes kept warm on a hot plate on the buffet table (a few other continental breakfast items were included on the table, as well as some incredibly weak coffee. My husband, sister, and I all had to add a spoonful of instant coffee to our cups to make the drip coffee drinkable). I was embarrassed because my sister was visiting NS and I chose this B&B, so when she turned to me and asked where the eggs were, I didn't know what to say. Pancakes are just carbs. They're pretty much baked goods, like danishes. In hindsight, I would have told the hosts that we were all Keto if it meant getting a real breakfast with proper protein. As it was, I felt so bad that I made my sister eggs and bacon the next morning to make it up to her. Bottom line: if you want a real hot breakfast (and decent coffee), look elsewhere. Final note: if you aren't interested in breakfast and don't mind the smell of mildew, this B&B is for you! It seemed clean and it's quiet and well decorated.

We are as sad to read this review as you say you were to write it. Unfortunately it appears that our 3½ stars didn’t match your 5 star requirements for accommodation. The other sad thing is that you do not use your actual name, so we cannot address you personally, however we think we know who you are and which room you stayed in. Although you appear to be good at written communication, that skill clearly does not transfer to face to face communication, as you did not say anything to either Glen or myself while you staying with us. If the smell was as strong as you say it was, then you should have come to us to discuss the issue and we would have gladly tried to find a solution to the issue. If we hadn’t had another room for the three of you, we would have found somewhere in town for you. Incidentally, that particular part of the property was built in 2004 and not 1874 like the farmhouse, so it is far from ‘old’ and that room was redecorated during Autumn of 2018 and we can assure you that there is no mildew, mould or damp in that room. It appears we fell well short of your expectations on the breakfast side too, but once again, communication with us would have been good, as then, we could have accommodated your needs. We alternate our hot breakfast dish every day between sweet and savoury, so that guests staying more than one night get a variety. It was unfortunate that you were not happy with our freshly made blueberry pancakes and local maple syrup, but again, if you had told us that you would have preferred eggs, we could have changed our choice for the hot dish that morning to accommodate you. In smaller B&B’s it is much more common to have table service with a traditional cooked breakfast being personally served, however it’s not so common in a large establishment like ours unless the room rates are much higher. We cater for many people with special diets and preferences, so it was unfortunate that your expectations were not met on this occasion. We have many thousands of guests who are very complimentary about our morning coffee and for those who require a stronger or weaker coffee, we can offer a French press tailor made to suit your needs. However we need to be told about the issue before we can do anything about it. We are sorry that your stay with us left your feeling bad and embarrassed, but hopefully your next trip to Cape Breton will be better.
