Bad points : A few maintenance issues but nothing too major, also our room was next to the pool ( ground floor) and slightly damp.
Good points : Lovely outdoor pool and grounds, Nice dining area and foods and drinks,Cheap beer!! Nice and friendly staff, beach within walking distance plus a good market, very cheap bus into Varna or the other direction to Golden Sands.
I must say Varna is a lovely City and well worth a visit. Golden Sands has a great beach and is an amazingly fun place to be both day and night. St.Constantines beaches are lovely too. Bulgarian cooking is great and there are many lovely friendly diners around. I found the Bulgarian people I came into contact with very nice and they have a special way about them.
Overall I recommend a stay at the Koral if you want to retreat away from the louder places but still be within reach of them.
I think I can see why there is a dichotomy of opinion on this hotel.
First the overall review -- which is very positive -- but please also read the stuff at the bottom!
The hotel is well located: although not particularly close to the beach, it's in a quieter area and nowhere is far to walk in this resort. There are many independent places to eat well and cheaply near the hotel, although the hotel food was also very good, if a little "samey" after a few days.
The hotel pool is great, and provided hours of entertainment for the kids. Apparently there's a club under the hotel, but we were never disturbed.
The staff could be a little uncommitted at times, but there was also some very good service -- the kids' animation team were excellent!
The air-conditioned lobby with the bar and the ping-pong tables also kept us occupied for hours.
Overall we had a great time here.
*But* you need to be aware that this is in effect two hotels:
- The new 3-star hotel. This is air-conditioned throughout, and is what you see in the photos.
- The old 2-star annexe. This presumably comprised the hotel in the former communist days.
We started off in the 2-star rooms. Having thought we were getting cheap rooms in a 3-star hotel, this was more than a bit of a disappointment. These are small, old (so old that despite best efforts from the cleaning staff, it is not possible to keep them really clean because of rusting metalwork, damp plaster in the shower etc.), and most importantly if you're here in the summer: they are not air-conditioned. I've stayed in hostels of a better standard.
For a moderate upgrade fee, we were able to move to the new part of the hotel for the last few nights. This was a completely different experience: indeed, the upper floors looked wonderful: light, airy, and modern, with what appeared (from the fire evacuation plan) to be large rooms. Unfortunately we were in two of the smaller rooms on the ground floor -- still a huge step up, but here's the other thing to look out for: the hotel permits pets, and from the smell, we definitely had the Dog Room. The strong smell of dog was with us night and day until the end of our stay.
So yes, we'd stay again, but be much more careful about choice of rooms!
The bathrooms are with mold and spiders.
Cleaners are coming not everyday, they don't even collect the garbage from the room.We needed to ask our bedsheets to be changed, and this happen just once for 2 weeks.Often we didn't have toilet paper and clean towels. When we were asking the answer was that they don't have right now as had a embarcation day.
The water in the pool is very cold.
The food is nice but the staff is awfull.Spoil everything. They are argumentive with bad attitude,no manners - magority russian speaking.
Most of them speak only russian, not even English or Bulgarian. The same with our room cleaner and some of the night shift reception. We had very big problem with communication and understanding.
So at the end for 2 weeks we get bad hygiene in the room, non professional reception service, and mean and rude staff in the restaurant.
See photo -
Mold everywhere in the room (see, feel) including sheets, dirty walls, broken room, cobwebs. No electric kettle only mini fridge. Mattress dirty. In the bathroom glass from dust with mosquito, broken tiles in the shower not to mention mold and smell urine.
The children's corner is a chapter in itself: it's about the yellow house - disgusting (no one cleaned there for a whole week, maybe even years, 100 years of dirt. see the photo, this is how it looked during our entire stay)
Wi-Fi hardly works at all.
My son cut his finger in the pool. All inclusive does not work at the bar by the pool - the bartender is bored, bothers you when you want one wine and God forbid when you want another. After an hour he says he has nothing to drink. The food is average.
This has nothing to do with a 4* hotel! And absolutely, ABSOLUTELY nothing for children!!!
The pool is a reasonable size and clean, but watch out - some surrounding areas got rather slippery when wet.
The maid service was the best we'd ever had, spotless rooms, faultless service and with a cheerful smile. Beds were comfortable, decor had been recently updated, air conditioning came in handy some days, always had hot water available for showers whatever time of day. (No kettle/tea making facilities, took our own with plug adapter, and put milk in fridge).
Located about 7 minutes stroll from a couple of sandy beaches with lifeguards; sunbed hire 5 Lev (£2) and sunshade 5 Lev each per day. 3 mins walk to a local permanent market and selection of places to eat and drink made it ideal. Staying B&B, we preferred the Koleloto 'snack bar' (restaurant) for excellent evening meals - delicious and cheap. Wish we had eaten there every night!
Did not experience any rowdy behaviour during our stay, so seemed suitable for all.
Cheaper to exchange English sterling at the Hotel (and locally) than it was back in UK. Hotel offered 2.70 Lev to £1 no commission, whereas UK Post Office offered only 2.57 Lev. (best we found was 2.85 Lev - but DO NOT exchange money on the streets - you will be cheated as old obsolete worthless currency will be given to you).
Taxis are reasonably priced but barter and fix a price - we got 8 Lev for a trip to Golden Sands about 10 min drive, but lowest for trip back was 15 Lev - car share makes sense. Can bus there, with half mile down hill walk from bus terminus to beach (uphill walk at end of day, so may prefer taxi back?)
Bus trip in other direction to Varna (the no. 89) was only 1 Lev (40p) each way for 20 min journey!
We throughly enjoyed our whole stay 13th-20th July 06 and would come again.
We do need to say BEWARE- beach traders selling clothing eg. Tee shirts or shorts - they will say 2 Lev to get you interested which they immediately bump up to 40 or 25 Lev once they have you in conversation. They are extremely persistent, just repeatedly say No! Also if you agree a price try to give exact amount - our friend got robbed in Varna market - he agreed a price of 25 Lev for 2 Tee shirts but only had 2 x 20 Lev notes, which he handed over and the trader pocketed the lot and refused pointblank to give change. This is not always the case but just be alert.
We got a great deal on this hotel and we were pleased with the first impressions when we got to the hotel.
The hotel room is bigger than expected and has a little balcony where you can sit outside of hang wet clothes out.
The beds were single beds pushed together to make a double bed, but you got used to it and wasn't really an issue.
Bathroom/shower was bigger than expected as well so on the whole the room was brilliant.
The hotel food for breakfast had a range of cheeses and cold meats with a few bits of salad items and fruit.
The hot food consisted of poached eggs, scrambled eggs, frankfurters and sometimes bacon. There was also cereals and a range of breads and rolls to have with these.
Overall, it was much the same everyday, but it was buffet stye so you can change what you have if you get bored of the same things.
The staff at the hotel were brilliant and most of them have speak good english, which is very handy as you will find many places outside the hotel have limited english.
The Bar people especially Krasi (who is commonly known as Chris) are very friendly and helpful if you want to know about places around Bulgaria and just general chit-chat. The cleaners were very quick in the rooms and were very good.
Even the Taxi driver was friendly and helpful. His rates vary a bit but as long as you agree a feebefore then there can be no arguements.
I don't think I would go to Bulgaria again, as I have probably seen of what I want to, but I would recommend this hotel if you wish to stay in St. Konstantin.
We decided to visit again to see if things had changed much, the hotel certainly has we cannot find one good thing to say about it now. (it’s now rated as 4 star)
Hardly any of the services stated in the brochure were available, no exchange desk, no mini bar, no restaurant facilities, no adult entertainment.
We booked 2 rooms for 4 adults.
The first problem was that our toilet would not flush, we had to fill the waste bin with water and pour this into the loo to flush it.
On our first full day we returned to our room at 5pm to find none of the rooms had been cleaned but the waste bins had been emptied.
The breakfast was terrible the bread products were dry and stale and there was hardly any hot food choice.
We complained to the hotel about the cleaning and the toilet, the rooms were now cleaned but not very well, there was mould in both bathrooms and the glass and mirrors were never cleaned.
The complimentary shower gel and shampoo were not replaced until 3 days before the end of our 2 week holiday.
We had to make do with wet and dirty towels for 4 days.
The internet was unusable unless you paid for the service.
Finally on the Wednesday (over 4 days into our holiday) our rep came with us to our room with the hotel maintenance man to see our non flushing toilet.
The maintenance man put one square of toilet paper into the toilet but it would not flush away, he blamed it on Italian toilets.
We were now offered a family/apartment room, this was not acceptable as there was only one bathroom and was a downgrade and not what we booked.
We also complained about the breakfast as indeed did a lot of people, a family of Germans had their rep with them who had called the restaurant manager out to talk to them.
The next day there was indeed a lot more available at breakfast, this lasted for 2 days then went back to as before.
We also complained to the rep about the lack of restaurant facilities, most of the guests were from other countries and were all inclusive.
Days before we had asked for a lunch menu, we were passed around a number of people all said that there was not menu available or food for us.
On the Wednesday the rep now said there was food available for us to purchase, this was after she had had a long discussion with a manager, we did finally manage to order some food a few days later although with much difficulty and a long search to produce a bar menu.
There is a general complacency amongst all of the hotel staff from the top to the bottom, the cleaning is very poor in fact some of the large windows in the public areas are so dirty you can hardly see out of them.
All this is understandable because the hotel manager is not available, it’s well known in the resort why he is unavailable.
We have of course took photo’s of all our complaints as we will try to recover some of our money back from the holiday booking.
We had of course asked the rep to move us to a 4 star Hotel of which we had paid for, all she would offer was a move to Golden Sands, another resort miles away or we could pay a lot more money for another Hotel, we did not agree to this as we had already paid considerable money for this hotel.
I have to agree with another reviewer that it was very obvious that they were not bothered about western tourists.
The only good reviews are from eastern tourists who’s expectations are not the same as ours.
If you look at my other reviews you will see that I am an honest Tripadvisior reviewer I like to commend a place if it is good as well as bad.
I cannot stress enough do not go to this hotel you will regret it!
