My sister and I are just home from our holiday in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria
where we were staying at the Wela Hotel. I realise reviews of Bulgarian
hotels are not readily available so we felt the need to review the Wela
for the benefit of future guests.
First Impressions
I am always very apprehensive about hotels on holiday but I was so
relieved when I seen the Wela, it was modern and the reception area was
very fresh and smart in appearance and our room was also of a similar
standard, thumbs up! (5 out of 5)
Location
The hotel is close to the beach and in a quieter location than the
centre however the holiday brochures omit to inform you of the busy road
you have to cross to go anywhere, even to walk along a pavement! (3 out
of 5)
Restaurant, Half Board
We were booked for half board however I would not recommend it, bed &
breakfast would have been ideal. The restaurant does not have a great
selection and what they did have was unlabelled so we had no idea what
it was, common problems amongst the hotels. We ate from the hotel
three times before resorting to the great selection of restaurants which
are very cheap. (2 out of 5)
Receptionists
Do not expect much, they are capable of checking you in and out and
thats about it, as they barely speak any English. (2 out of 5)
General Tips
Telephone Calls
Never, ever, ever make a telephone call from your room, its
extortionate! The standard cost of a call per minute at the international
calling booths along the promenade is 0.55-0.69LV per minute and the cost
from the hotel room is around 4LV per minute, yes almost 8 times
more!
Tipping
Its customary in Bulgaria to tip. You will be asked to tip the bus
driver on arrival and departure so its a good idea to ask for some
smaller notes when you are ordering your currency (e.g. 2 or 5 leva
notes).

The cleaners had our beds changed everyday along with plenty clean towels. Our room was hoovered, balcony was moped, bathroom was cleaned and moped everyday and we had plenty of toilet rolls, we couldnt doubt the cleaners as they were more than excellent at their jobs.
The bar staff in the lobby were very friendly, even though the drink was expensive in the wela.
Overall we had no magor complaints about the wela but they could do with some night entertainment and reduce the price of their drinks.
The hotel itself is 100% spotless. Most of the staff talk english apart from the undercover secruityguard as we realized after talking to him for about 10 minutes.
We (family of four with two children) have just returned from Wela on the 27th.
The hotel is very clean and tidy throughout, fixtures and fittings are above standard and cleaners never seemed to stop working, this was the barmen and women, aswell as all other employee's, not just the regular cleaners.
The rooms were spacious and more than adequate for us, two adults and two children.
Wela have a had a lot of criticism about food, well all I can say is if you like caviar and gourmet food, don't bother, but if you like meat, veggies, rice, salad, you know , what us mere mortals enjoy, then you will be happy and there's also plenty of it, they don't mind if you go back for 2nds, 3rds or 4ths!!!!!!
the mix of nationalities and age groups is fine, yes there are groups of lads but there are also groups of ladies, friends, old people, families etc and everyone got along great!!!!! Some noise in the foyer in the early hours, but the sound proofing on the doors etc proved fine by us and we rarely heard a thing unless we popped onto the balcony.
Entertainment by the Animation team was great in my opinion, please remember they are trying to cater for different age groups and different nationalities, the only nite that was below par was the comedy nite, but that was purely down to the nationality differences, what makes the British laugh is something totally different to what makes a Bulgarian or a Russian laugh, so give them a break.
Some very good shows to be honest and them guys were there from 8 in the morning till 12 at night trying to give everyone a good holiday, would you work them hours at home for peanuts?????? no me neither, and they really impressed me and I just haven't got a bad word to say about any of them.
Overall we all had a good holiday, my youngest is four and there wasn't much for him to do, but that's just down to the fact he doesn't like the water much so he was just on the sand pit play area or knocking a golf ball round the mini golf, which he enjoyed doing.
I'd say all in all Wela is a nice, clean and friendly place for all ages and groups, a hard working team, and that goes for every single employee there, was expecting the worst when I read the reviews, can only imagine they are done by people who haven't got a clue or who just expect 6 star for 3-4 star money.
As your average working class family we have said we would go back there in the future not the best place we've been but we've stayed at 5 star places that were worse, so a good value holiday
It was more or less brushed under the carpet I was accused of causing a riot when the incident happened (I didn't) Thomas cook accused the wrong person when they didn't even ask for a description of which member of staff it was. By accusing the wrong person it took them 3 days to check the cctv. I was more or less accused of making it up and told to think about this man and his family and this could ruin his career (well maybe if he didn't commit such a horrible act his job wouldn't be threatened). It seemed because we were moved hotels (Bellevue 100% better and more welcoming) I should've gotten over the incident. This hotel doesn't even deserve a one star rating. I wouldn't want anyone else being put into a situation like I was so please stay away and book elsewhere.
All I ever see on this site is negative reviews for everywhere, why? Because normally the only people who write reviews are moaners and whiners who enjoy spreading their misery! Well I thought I'd try and change that by leaving a positive review! :-)
The Wela is a great hotel. It's an all inclusive hotel and I must say the food is very good. It's not 5* Restaurant quality, but what do you expect from a 3* hotel on the Eastern side of Europe?! It's all very well presented and there is enough choice to keep you interested all week. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get a grip!
The staff are lovely if you make the effort to interact with them. Too many Brits have this idea that they are all there to bow down to their every whim. Our group made the effort and decided to have a night of drinking and mixing with the staff at the hotel rather than going out down the strip. We had one of our best nights, moving from the free bar (finishes at midnight) into the pay bar, and drinking and socialising until around 4-5am. We ended up having pictures taken and a really good night. For the rest of our holiday all of the staff that were dotted about the hotel that night would come up daily to ask how we were and what we were going to do with our days. We'd made the effort, now they were returning the favour!
Sunny Beach is a lovely resort, and is so very cheap! The beach stretches for miles and the scenery is beautiful! We were there for partying though.......
Sunny Beach has great nightlife. It's not Ibiza so dont expect that, I would put it more like the hedonistic Greek Island resorts like Faliraki and Malia etc. There is a great vibe in Sunny Beach, very friendly. Sadly for me it seems as if 18-30 have discovered Sunny Beach this year so I'm keeping everything crossed they dont do their normal thing of destroying a perfectly good party scene!!!
There is plenty to do if your not there for the drink too, dont be put off because my review is based around partying, it's just what I like to do. I reckon Couples and families of all ages would enjoy Sunny Beach too, and apart from the main strip would get everything they wanted out of a holiday!
All in all I have now been to Sunny Beach 3 times, the Wela Hotel twice, and am heading back to Sunny Beach in September, this time and for the first time, staying at the Laguna Park (Review to follow! ;-) ). If you want luxury then stop being to stingy and book yourself off to the Caribbean! If you want a fun filled, friendly, clean, enjoyable holiday then look no further than Sunny Beach and the fantastic Wela Hotel!
