As a family with a 16month old sick baby we stayed here the last night before our departure home. All staff were friendly, the food was quite good (but somewhat overpriced), the rooms and location is idyllic.
The reason we rate this hotel as "bad"...More
This is one of the worst places we ever stayed, not only in Asia, but elsewhere. They have misleading photos on website, but rooms are worn out, SPA looks like run down storage, staff is slow and hostile. It is so bad that even chairs...More
We booked this ten night break at Ranweli Holiday Village through Kuoni who we regarded as a highly respected holiday company!!!!!!!

Probably a fancy place 8 years ago, now it seems a bit run down. The place could easily get 5 points by adjusting a few things. The swing is broken, fix it. The pool area is not supplied with mattresses for the sun beds. A...More
My husband and I were fortunate to have been able to visit this resort. The resort is based on an island, that has to be reached by a small ferry across a river.
The setting was beautiful, the staff were friendly and very accommodating.

Many other places that trips go to are even further away. We had a tour for a number of nights with a car and driver, but if you want to use Ranweli as a main base you could still go off for a one or two night tour and return to Ranweli after that (car and driver is the way to do it - the good hotels have driver accommodation, so you would not have to pay extra for that.
Colombo well worth a visit IMO and that is only an hour os so away from Ranweli and you could even use a train to get there, but would need a tuk tuk or something to get you to the train station.
