Wonderful place to stay. The rooms are very clean and has a beautiful balcony too. Benjamin, the host, ensures everything is well taken care of before check in. Padmini and Gamini who live on property are very kind to cater to your needs. Plus points for a sweet cat and the sweetest dog they have on property.

We stopped here before we flew to Jaffna the welcome was warm and friendly.
Rooms where immaculate and clean cleaner than some of the 5* Hotels.
Breakfast was nice .
Decoration of the hotel was very nice .
Would definitely return if I needed a base near Colombo .

I stayed at Mount Lodge for one night only before a wedding being held at the Mount Lavinia Hotel.
Mount Lodge is situated less than a 3 minute walk away, you can see the entrance as soon as you step outside.
We stayed in the suite on the top floor and it was beautiful with it's own lounge area and a beautiful bedroom. The design is so unique and it was so much better than the boring, dated hotel rooms of the Mount Lavinia Hotel.
If you deciding where to stay in Mount Lavinia, definitely stay here if you want an individual room. I cannot fault it at all, really good service, excellent Sri Lankan cuisine and a good breakfast in the morning.

We stayed here for two nights. The hotel is easy to locate and close to Mount Lavinia train station. The room and bathroom was clean and comfortable, and the communal sitting area was a nice place to relax after a long day exploring Colombo.
The beach is a short walk with a few OK restaurants.
The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful and made our stay even more enjoyable and relaxed.
Breakfast was huge and delicious and set us up for the day! We didn't bother with lunch both days as breakfast was so filling!

Pleasant hosts and wonderful, genuine SL food, really delicious dinner all freshly cooked. We had the first floor room, comfortable bed, simply furnished. Small, spartan bathroom not en suite, no hot water in the morning, no toiletries. Polished concrete floors and lovely interior garden patios, smart furniture and layout. Upstairs garden patio with table and chairs but this was locked by the time we came back from our stroll (although I'm sure they would have opened it again, if we'd asked). Lovely sitting room adjacent to our room. Local architecture to see and get a flavour of life here. The hotel beach was recommended, the public one could have been lovely but wasn't clean. Far enough away from the train line that runs immediately behind the big hotel here, Mount Lavinia. Nice for an overnight stay. Thanks to very gracious hosts.

Dear Sandwich_Sue, Many Kind thanks for your Trip Advisor Review. It is greatly Appreciated. We pride ourselves on and take claim to serving some of the best Sri Lankan Food in the City. We are also very glad you loved the Design and Style of Mount Lodge as much as we do. Our Apologies for the problem with Hot Water. I do hope you were shown the Heater Switch in the Bathroom. This is now part of the Welcome process so should not be a problem in future. Sorry also for the Garden Balcony being closed on your return in the evening. We generally close earlier to avoid mosquitoes. I have now also asked our manager to ensure that Gardens remain open, lit and setup for guests until they retire to bed. Extra Coils will be lit both inside and out as needed to control mosquitoes. We recommend Mount Lodge for Arrivals, Departures and for anyone wishing to Explore the City of Colombo. We also own and operate a Garden Resort 'Nisala Arana' in Bentota for those looking for a calmer & more relaxing style of holiday only minutes from the Beach. Benjamin R. We really loved staying here. It was so relaxing and comfortable. There are only a few rooms with living areas so is just like staying in a friend's house. The breakfast was absolutely delicious too. The only (slight) negative (as mentioned by another reviewer previously) is that the bathroom is completely open on one side (there is no wall or window but a void that goes through all the storeys of the house) so that we could hear people in the bathroom on the floor below us as well as the hosts downstairs in the kitchen. Anyway, as long as you don't mind not having privacy in the loo, you'll be fine!

Dear Traveler, Your review is greatly Appreciated. Many Thanks for taking the time to forward your thoughts. We are planing a simple & stylish way to offer some privacy of sound between the bathrooms on the different levels. We plan to hang Bamboo blinds covered in Handloom Material that should offer some soundproofing and a better sense of privacy for guests in the Suite and Deluxe Rooms. We have also asked staff to kindly keep talking to a minimum in the Kitchen area. We hope this will help and thanks again for bringing these points to our attention. Hope to see you again at Mount Lodge soon and please also consider our Garden Resort 'Nisala Arana' on your next Holiday in Serendipitous Sri Lanka. Kind Regards, Benjamin Pereira

No sign on the door. A forbidding-looking iron grille. But once through you find yourself in an architectural gem house. The sweet retired couple who caretake the house said it had been designed by the famous, ubiquitous Geoffrey Bawa. It could very well have been. Polished cement floors, ingenious detail (eg marble-topped window seats with discreet cupboards beneath) and open shafts cutting up through the whole house where bamboo and palm grow. The 2 rooms on the 1st floor (in one of which we stayed) each had their own mini garden terrace. The decoration throughout the house is exquisite - modern art rubbing shoulders with antique Sri Lankan handicrafts and colonial-type furniture (4-poster beds). Tasty home-cooked food. And located just a few-minutes' walk from the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel, where we walked for afternoon tea (a must!). Not sure if it would be the perfect base (distance-wise) for first-time visitors to Colombo, but for us who know Colombo, our 1-night stay was a treat at the end of our holiday. Highly recommended.

We were welcomed at 10pm by the lovely Giamini and his wife Padmini and shown to a beautiful room with huge double bed draped with large mosquito net. It was air conditioned and also had a large ceiling fan. We fell into bed and next morning had a wonderful breakfast of Hoppers (rice and coconut pancakes) with egg, and a plate of fresh tropical fruits. We stayed 11 nights at this lovely architect-designed guest house and used it as our base for exploring Sri Lanka. Padmini is the most amazing cook and we were treated to some fabulous breakfast and dinners. Extras worth mentioning are the excellent wifi, laundry facilities, comfortable sitting areas including pretty courtyard gardens and large library of books & DVDs.

Loved the layout and decor of this large house with 4 guest rooms. Nice lounge areas to relax and small terraces to chill on. Polished concrete floors, lots of planters, nice furniture.
Our room had 2 queen sized beds pushed together, mosquito net, thin hard mattress with sheet and thin but heavy duvet. I found the bed to be comfortable, but it may be a little hard for some. Lots of storage space in large wardrobe, small desk, tv with only one channel that we could find, not a problem as we weren't here to watch TV. Large bathroom with rain shower, water pressure fine. Good hairdryer!
The house is 5 mins walk from the mount Livinia hotel and the railway station. You can only access the house by ringing the bell and having the gate unlocked. I have to be honest I found this quite annoying. The owner (an Australian) wasn't there and the couple looking after us were very kind and helpful but spoke limited English. The air con in our room wasn't working well and once made aware they sorted this out very quickly.
Breakfast made by the couple was awesome. Hoppers (a local rice flour pancake) with egg or butter and jam absolutely delicious. Good local fruits and tea or coffee.
So why the but? Well firstly it would be nice to have your own key or the ability to enter the house. Helpful Information about where to go in Mt. Livinia would be good. Extra little touches like tea and coffee in room, update the blinds in the room as they are slightly damaged and a little dirty looking. Update bedding and towels too as quite thin and used looking.

The Mount Lavinia Hotel is literally 2 minutes walk from Mount Lodge and has a wonderful pool overlooking the Indian Ocean and Greater Colombo City. There is a charge for pool use which inlcudes changing room, pool towels and pool bed. I hope this helps.
