#12 of 35 Specialty lodging in Esperance
Marvel at the dramatic rocky headlands, sheltered bays and tall eucalyptus woodlands on Woody Island Nature Reserve- only a 20-minute ferry ride from Esperance. Rich in history, Woody Island is one of 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago (commonly known as the Bay of Isles) and is the only island open to visitors with overnight accommodation. Woody Island lacks snakes and introduced predators, making it a haven for wildlife such as birds and lizards. Learn about the Island’s history and get close to nature during a guided bushwalk. Come stay with us on Woody Island and take advantage of everything there is to do and relax in nature. We offer both tents and safari huts for our guests, as well as a bar & kiosk with food, drinks, and fishing & snorkelling equipment for hire. Wake up to the sounds of the birds, go for a morning swim or walk, and have a coffee while watching the bay for dolphins.

Just when we thought our family xmas holiday couldn't get any better, we were all given a eco day tour to Woody Island on boxing day. Where do i start! We left Esperance at 9am. The tour included seal watching, dolphin sightings and an eagle viewing at different sites some kilometres out at sea. We were warned we may not see all the animals however we must have had the gods on our side because we saw them all & with the dolphins we saw them 3 times!!! After touring these spots we headed for the day at Woody Island and the approach is stunning. We took with us loads of supplies, an esky full of food & drinks. We were a group of 13 including toddlers so we had alot of bags etc. The crew looked after loading and off loading all our bags etc & taking them from the ferry up to the restaurant where we were able to set ourselves up for the day. We were provided morning tea on arrival & a guided walking tour was also provided. You can buy foid & drinks at the restaurant if you want & you can hire goggles & snorkles too. The view is stunning from the laid back restaurant, there are no windows that obstruct your view! There is plenty of seating for groups and families. We opted for snorkeling and swimming. It was such a magnificent day, the weather was perfect which topped off such a special day. Rachel was our guide and she was absolutely lovely. The ferry was spacious and is limited to a certain number only. When you do the tour the ferry only goes to the island once per day. The return time from the island back to Esperance was 2pm. The trip back is half the time to getting there because there are no stops on the way. Overall it was an amazing day that i would happily repeat. It was such a treat and made for the perfect gift. A definite MUST if you are visiting Esperance.

Unfortunately we didn’t camp on Woody Island, something we will definitely do next time. We did do the day trip leaving 9am and getting back just after 2pm. We saw seals on way to island and dolphins whilst swimming in the bay. Hubby did the walking tour (1.5hrs) and I went on my own walk to Skinny Dip Bay and had a look around the campground. Tents and beds supplied and the safari huts look cool with many having views. Enjoyed lunch and a drink at the Blacjacks Bar/cafe which overlooks the bay. Beautiful place to spend a couple of nights or just enjoy a day trip.

Came for two nights but after one day we extended to four nights. This is a fantastic place. Lovely walk around the top of the island, stunning views across to the other islands and Cape le Grande, great snorkeling and fishing. Will definitely be back for a longer stay.

We have recently returned from a delightful stay on Woody Island. Our boat trip over was smooth sailing with a sea eagle and some seals to see. The crew were friendly, helpful and happy to chat. Arriving at the island was an easy process and we felt welcomed not rushed. We were able to have morning tea then off walking on our guided tour lead by Gen. She was a fun guide, especially enjoyed hearing about the mutton birds landing skills (or lack of!). The views from the summit gave a good perspective of Esperance and surrounds. After the walk we were able to settle into our accomodation, then spend time on the balcony watching the large variety of birds darting around with sea views in the foregound, very peaceful. We had drinks and a meal at the kiosk and this was special as our host Fish entertained us with a few stories and his open friendliness was a delight. Sheree prepared us a simple but perfectly cooked meal of grilled fish and amazing chips! Fish and Sheree were the best hosts we felt like were valued visitors and from what we saw they were great hosts to everyone. This is a top little island to come for a getaway with natural surrounds, some lovely hikes and birds constantly darting around & tweeting The rocky & sandy beach is ideal for snorkling off the pontoon & fun for little ones too. Climbing over the rocks we found a beautiful red starfish and other sea critters loaded in crevices. We had a lovely stay and thank the crew girls Anna and Gen & the wonderful hosts Fish and Sheree for their hospitality. Great experience, great trip!
