Called in for a Friday night dinner and enjoyed an open fire in the traditional old restaurant. Menus were on the table, orders were placed at the bar, staff were very pleasant and helpful, and service to the table was reasonably speedy. A local cabernet shiraz- The Musician by nearby Majella winery was the house red and was both excellent... More

We stopped for dinner on a Friday night on way to Mt Gambier. Surprisingly quiet at 730pm. Fairly standard pub meal, schnitzel, steaks etc. We had steak and both were cooked to request. Quality was also good. The decoration is aged and the ladder left over in the corner from some work suggested a little more care could be taken... More

The front bar is the main attraction here at Heywards. The bar lady that was very nice and seemed to have everything under control. The meal was very good but when I went to wash my hands in the boys toilet off the front bar and the tap didn't work which is absolutely disgusting. Went the rest off the night... More

Ten middle aged men riding pushies from Radelaide to Melbourne. Third night out, with fairly low expectations about accommodation and dinner, based on what'd gone before en-route, we arrived in Penola on a hot day, into a headwind. Happily, we'd booked into Heyward's Royal Oak. First things first: beers--perfect. Cold and a variety for each palate. Rooms--mixed bag. Four poster... More

We booked for dinner, arrived, ignored by the person, (male) attending front bar, and openly hostile at having to pay out $300.00 on pokies to another patron who was a winner. He then continued to ignore us, went about what he was doing, so we made the right decision and left. The Prince of Wales down the road is a... More

Hayward's Royal Oak Hotel has a wonderful charm, that makes you feel right a home (even on short stay). The small room had a four-poster bed (very comfortable) a TV and small basin. Shared bathrooms where very clean with a heater for those cold winter days (we where there in July). Everything was so well presented, this hotel had a... More

We stayed at this hotel for one night in order to visit Pipers at Penola during a weekend away. The room was clean and free wifi was included in the room rate. It was exactly as you'd expect: no frills accommodation suitable for a one night stay. I didn't love the shared bathroom and toilet arrangement, but I was pleased... More
