Pine Creek is now a bit off the highway, but it is well worth the short detour to have a look. Probably the main attraction is the Lazy Lizard Pub, restaurant, caravan park. Excellent in every respect including prices that are quite affordable and realistic. An old bush type pub with plenty of character and super friendly staff, you will enjoy your stay. We stayed two nights and could have enjoyed a week there if we had the time.
We stayed there for one night as part of a two day birding trip to Pine Creek and places nearby. Our birding trip was excellent (Experience the Wild, review on the way!), and the Lazy Lizard was just another pleasant surprise in the NT, where we had one good time after another! Honestly, our whole Darwin/NT adventure was expectations exceeded just about everywhere we went. Before we get to specifics, let's just say that even if The Lazy Lizard was some sort of Camp Crystal Lake-meets-Bates Motel, we would have loved it, because...it's a wildlife wonderland for those of us from outside Oz/NT. Hooded parrots drinking from water taps, Galah cockatoos, flying foxes by the THOUSANDS, lots of other cockatoos and birds...we loved it. However, if you are not a wildlife person, and do not want to hear many, many flying foxes coming and going at dusk and dawn, you may want to get some earplugs, and then stay there anyway! We had one of the "cabins," which are sort of what us Yanks call mobile homes. They are surprisingly quiet, well appointed, clean, and have good AC, which is really important in October! Nothing fancy, but you wouldn't expect that there, and besides, the grounds, resto, and wildlife more than make up for any "missing stars" in the accommodations! We slept just fine! Beautiful sky too! We had garlic prawns and a veggie pizza, both better than they had any right to be out there in Pine Creek, and nice cold XXXX to go with. Friendly service, nice indoor/outdoor dining...loved it! No idea what the caravanning facilities are like, but I bet they're as good as the rest, and that's pretty good indeed. Thanks guys!…
We paid $30 for a powered site for two adults. We returned here because both the small caravan park and the tavern and store seem to be clean, tidy and well managed. The whole place has a bit of Territory style without any of the gungy old junk that supposedly gives outback pubs some atmosphere. It did not disappoint. The gardens and small pool were attractive and the gourmet pizza was just as good as last year. Pine Creek is a nice quiet little spot off the highway.
On our way back after a couple of weeks in Darwin, Kakadu & Litchfield and just wanted an overnight powered caravan site before heading off the next morning. However, after a lovely welcome from reception, we settled in to a great shady site (our pick) checked the place out, rustic but clean & nice. Went into the tavern for a great coldie, not disappointed & the staff (in particular, Zoe) were again very welcoming. We ended up staying 3 nights instead, enjoying the refreshing pool, terrific rustic tavern and fabulous grilled barramundi, salad & chips. Great place, lovely friendly staff & well worth a few extra days stay to chill out.
We stopped for 1 night (unpowered site) and after setting up our tent, enjoyed a pizza and beer in the rustic tavern made from termite mound. Lots of shady spots and big camp kitchen, good showers and pool. Very friendly staff.
