Surf Side Hotel delights guests with its convenient beachfront location and the variety of services provided by the warm staff. While the rooms offer beautiful views and cleanliness, some guests suggest they could benefit from modernization and more amenities. The amenities, including a praised breakfast and beach access, are popular, though opinions on the value are mixed, with some finding the rates high. The atmosphere is generally appreciated for its coziness, but the beach's accessibility and breakfast variety have room for enhancement.

Family has been vacationing in OBX since the 1960's. Sadly experienced the rise of huge rental homes pushing out small family and couples vacationers and eroding the charm of the Outer Banks. We decided to try the Surf Side several years ago and it has become our annual beach hotel. The OBX charm is alive and well at this hotel. All staff are kind and friendly. It is obvious that they take personal pride in their responsibilities. Comfortable and clean from the parking lot to the guest rooms and everything in between.

First time staying here. Room was clean and well appointed. Staff was friendly and helpful. One maintenance guy in particular (sorry don't know name) went above and beyond to offer help and saw him helping many other guests carry their bags, etc. In the aftermath of COVID, I heard of guests in other hotels complaining about things and being nasty to staff. I felt the staff here went above and beyond to, not only respect distancing, but provide the best service they could given the best service given the parameters they have been forced to work with given the COVID regulations. This is an older hotel that has been well cared for and updated. Just steps from the beach which was wonderful and pool area is nice. I would recommend the hotel! Oceanfront room if you can, beautiful view. Breakfast was excellent and was made for pick up during COVID guidelines but was always fresh and tasted delicious. My only suggestions would be towel racks in the bathrooms (there is nowhere to hang towels in one room we stayed in and limited option in the other room). My only other suggestion would be that someone needs to clean up the surroundings grounds. There was trash, old signs and just misc items that were up under the decking and under the oceanfront rooms that just take away from the niceness of the hotel. My only complaint was that the stairwell and hallways smelled of marijuana our entire stay. Not that they can control what people are doing in the rooms, BUT I think it hinders the family vibe that the hotel seems to be portraying. Our final day, the lobby even smelled of it. Management was aware and did set about looking into it.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights in this hotel from 11/16-11/19. We were in Room 411 - Oceanfront Deluxe Suite. The room was spacious, and the suite included a good sized fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, in addition to a small kitchen table and chairs. Best of all in these COVID times, it was EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN! The room boasts multiple balconies, each with its own seating. Our favorite was the oceanfront balcony, of course. The staff was always pleasant and accommodating, the indoor pool and hot tub were open and clean, and they even provided take out hot breakfasts every morning that you pre-ordered the night before. The entire hotel (outside of the room itself) is well maintained and very clean as well. I whole heartedly recommend this hotel, and I expect we will be back in the very near future.

If you are afraid of COVID-19 do not stay here. Staff does not wear masks and hotel guests are not required to wear masks. They make you sign a waiver when you arrive probably for this reason...Just was a bit unsettling after all of the emails and notices they have about mask wearing. Additionally, thought that the room was overpriced based on the comfort of the bed, bathroom and additional amenities. However, the ocean view was lovely and definitely made up for some of the other issues. I think I would have had a better stay if the COVID policies had been followed.

Based on the website this appeared to be a "luxury" hotel room worth the price. That was not our experience. The "Honeymoon Superior" room was advertised and priced as a luxury accommodation but fell short of expectation. Basic amenities like toilet paper were "gas station" quality, or absent like shampoo and conditioner unless possibly by request at the front desk. At check in we inquired if the room was available for an additional night and were told "No" without any effort to accommodate an additional night's stay in any room. Housekeeping services were limited to changing towels as opposed to full service. When we arrived a half hour after the check in time of 4 the desk person had to verify that the room had been cleaned due to staffing shortages. The TV channels on the TV Guide channel and room directory guide were not all available (ex. HBO but there were several others absent). There was conflicting information between the book in the room and the website regarding other items as well to include breakfast. We did not know if we needed to complete a form to order the limited selection of breakfast options and submit to someone somehow or if it was an open breakfast bar. The first day we walked into the dining room and determined it was a combination of the two with some options not available (ex. waffles). There were employees in the hallways on the ground floor painting walls and disrupting the flow of traffic with little regard for the throughway for the tenants. In summary, I could have paid another $100 per night to stay at the Sanderling to celebrate my 30th Wedding Anniversary in a much higher standard of comfort or $300 less to stay at another hotel for the same level of service.

We booked an expensive premium room but found it with no hand soap and only half roll of toilet paper. Had to go down to front desk to get more. Another guest violated hotel policy by smoking which clouded our balcony. To their credit, front desk staff tried to identify the offender. No caffeinated coffee available in the morning, a big dissatisfier for coffee drinkers. No plastic lids for coffee cups so guests could take coffee up to their rooms without risk of spilling on way up. During the dangerous Delta surge of the COVID pandemic, few staff or guests wore face coverings indoors. This was rampant everywhere in the OBX, not limited to this hotel, but a clear public health menace at this time nevertheless. Back to room: found TV set to closed captions and unable to turn it off. Also, for a room that we were charged $410 on one of the nights, is it too much to ask to have a small clock next to bed? The balcony had dried bird poop on the little table, did not appear balcony was checked by cleaning staff before our arrival. Bottom line: friendly staff but did not get value for our money as noted.

Response from Melissa Murray, General Manager at Surf Side Hotel
Responded Sep 17, 2021
Ranger Randy2021 - Thank you for choosing Surf Side for your stay and taking the time to leave us a review and valuable feedback. As with a lot of places this year supplies at times are very hard to come by, as well as getting service people to come out and not have month long wait lists. We try our very best to make sure we have everything we need, but again sometimes it is hard and we have a long wait/delivery time. I am sorry at this time masks aren't required, but some of my staff do continue to wear theirs. Hand soap we do have in the rooms, it is in the bars on your little vanity stand, we haven't had hand soap pumps in a few years. Our housekeepers take pride in the cleanliness of the rooms, and I will follow up to make sure they are being thorough on the balconies. I hope you will come back again ad you are a valued repeat guest. Thanks, Melissa

Surf Side is a small quaint local hotel with only four floors which we found to be the perfect location to stay while visiting the Outer Banks. Its centrally located so if you want to travel North to Duck and Corolla its about an hour drive or if you want to head South to Cape Hatteras you have about an hour to an hour and a half drive. The staff was always friendly and helpful. Easy access to the beach with a shower to use when leaving the beach. Breakfast was good but they could offer more options or change up the menu daily. I believe there were only a total of five options. We were there 5 days and every morning breakfast options were the same. Other than the breakfast we enjoyed our stay and would stay at Surf Side again when visiting the Outer Banks.

My partner and I spent a week here as part of a summer getaway (we had soccer tickets in Chapel Hill, but thought it would be fun to also explore the Outer Banks!). We stayed in one of the honeymoon suites, which had a lovely balcony with a beautiful view as well as a bathtub with jets. The beach was soft sand and lovely even on a cloudy day, and the location is great for getting to many tasty restaurants in Nags Head.

However, I felt this property was lacking when you consider the cost per night (more than $300 a night). Housekeeping is extremely minimal, just taking out the trash plus fresh towels, and two nights of our stay I had to call down and ask for towels to be taken or fresh ones to be left as it had not been done. When a bunch of dirty towels had been left in our bathtub and I asked the front desk about having them removed, I was told I was complaining, which felt inappropriate. The toiletries are very minimal, too, so definitely bring your own. I do think the rooms were dated, and it was a little annoying we had a table rather than a couch, but I think this would be fine if it were a little less expensive. I also think the hotel should make more of an effort with the accessibility of the beach. If you don't bring your own chairs, blankets, and umbrellas, then you have to wake up early and compete for rentals with other guests, which isn't very relaxing. An easier path down to the beach would be nice, too. Breakfast food was delicious (I can't say the same about the wine reception...), but actual plates rather than so much disposable stuff would've been preferred, again, because of the price point.

Overall I think this property offers a lot, most especially a gorgeous view, but at a bit of a steep price tag.

First time to Outer Banks. We picked Surf Side Hotel based on positive Trip Advisor reviews, location and convenience to local attractions and restaurants. We were not disappointed. Although fairly large it is not a chain hotel, but regardless of other reviews it is not a boutique hotel either. It is not a new hotel, but has been reasonably maintained given the lashings it has seen from hurricanes. Our king bedroom directly overlooked the beach and was priced accordingly. The balcony had a couple of white rocking chairs to relax and enjoy the view. The room was large, clean and offered standard amenities. Bed was OK but certainly not luxurious. The room was quiet, except for the ocean and a few heavy footsteps from the room above. Due to Covid the room was not serviced except for trash pick up and change of towels. This was appropriate given the situation. Breakfast was carry out order style, with good but limited selection. Some fresh fruit and extra toast would have been nice, but selection was strictly limited to 4 menu items preordered the night before. Hotel staff were friendly and very helpful. They have managed Covid well throughout the hotel. Masks were worn by all staff. I wish one or two guests had the same respect for others. Access to beach was easy. I’m sure the outdoor pool would have been enjoyable in the summer months. Overall a nice hotel in a convenient location.
