Okay, so if you are looking for an upscale resort with all modern furnishings, like a fine hotel, this isn’t it. But neither is the price. If you are looking for clean, well-maintained, comfortably furnished in very good condition, with great beach access, easy parking, and a community vibe (friendly neighbors), this is the place! Compared to other beach rentals on the Outer Banks in this price range, it’s great! We have travelled to the OBX for over 35 years, and this is our go-to place.

If you’re like me, you read the bad reviews first. I’d like to respond to some folks criticisms. Yes, the beach has experienced storm erosion. The entire OBX has. Fortunately, it has been restored to some extent, but not the incredible depth it once had. It’s still a great beach, and the area has lots of shopping, tons of restaurants, and plenty of fun activities to do from historic to sports to nature attractions. The best kite flying in the country is here. Go to Kitty Hawk Kites and get a two-line kite. They are easy to fly and GREAT fun!

It’s true, you have to go over a walkway over the dunes to get on the beach. The dunes protect the entire area and its buildings from storms and further beach erosion. Please don’t walk or play on them. (The plants are fragile, and their root systems are what hold the dunes together in a storm.)

True, there is no public transportation. But then again, it’s a really rare beach town that does.

The fire alarm doesn’t go off for no reason. It goes off because someone accidentally has a small stove fire, or causes heavy kitchen smoke (cooking burgers is famous for this). Kitchen fires can become serious quickly. When the alarm does go off, we meet in the parking lot and chat with each other. Get to know your neighbors, thank the fire department, and watch the kids enjoy the fire truck. It only takes once for everyone there that week to learn to be mindful of opening doors if the cooking gets smoky.

I agree, the dumb waiter could use an update with a door on it, so things can be rolled onto it rather than lifted over. Next time I go, I’ll make that suggestion! (It’ll need a way to keep kids from playing on it, though.)

Finally, while there isn’t a washer dryer in the unit, there is a free laundry room. I’ve never used it, but occasionally see someone in there doing laundry.

Have stayed at this resort three times now and plan to go back again. It is located right on the beach with a fabulous view from the living room and master bedroom. We like to stay in the winter when things are quiet in the OBX. Nobody bothers you and you can just enjoy the ocean view and the beach steps from the building. The unit is very well equipped with everything you need during your stay. Grocery stores, restaurants, etc. are all quite close by. The location is great. The only recommendation I shared with management is that they should replace the queen size bed in the master bedroom with a king size when they replace the bed.

My favorite resort @ OBX, whether RCI or not. Friendly, courteous, and attentive staff, great rooms that are well appointed, million-dollar views of the ocean and beach, all in addition to the plethora of attractions of the OBX. I love it

Enjoyed our recent stay at The Golden Strand! We stayed in C3, a top floor end unit with magnificent views up and down the coastline. The view of this unit can’t be beat, while the condo itself was ok. It was really clean which is top priority but has the bare minimum necessities. Not the most comfortable but it was fine for the 2 of us. The complex has free laundry facilities (we did not use) and a pool that looked really nice and well kept (wasn’t open yet for the season). The complex was quiet because it was not busy and the beach out front was so relaxing and not crowded. We liked that it’s an older complex but would probably try a different unit if we return. Overall, a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Elevator on far side of complex that isn’t the most convenient for some units during peak season.

The Golden Strand is perfectly situated on the beach in Kill Devil Hills, NC. We had an amazing view of the ocean, surfers, fisher people, etc. Nearby (within several blocks) were grocery stores, shopping, Wright Brothers Memorial, restaurants, and anything else you might need. The beach is 30 seconds from your door. The unit we had was large, well designed, great kitchen, etc. we couldn’t have asked for a better place to enjoy exploring the Outer Banks.

I don’t mind older resorts, because they always have more square footage. We always have a group, and we never felt crowded. We had a nice balcony with the view of the beach. No extra fees added, unlike the more modern resorts with “extra” amenities- which we never use. We go to relax, unwind, and chill in our surroundings as a family - and it’s nice to have a place to go to that isn’t hassling you to see or buy into another timeshare, want you to attend a “welcome” breakfast, or try to get you to schedule adventure or excursions. We just needed the beach with a great view, internet access, and a big kitchen so that we could spend our vacation relaxing. We were very happy about this place.

The Kill Devil Hills / Kitty Hawk area in the Outer Banks is our favorite vacation spot. This was our first time staying at The Golden Strand and our expectations were exceeded. The beach location of the resort and the view of the ocean were fantastic. Although not the Ritz, our 3 bedroom unit was spacious, the bed was comfortable, the other furniture more than accommodated our needs, and it was just overall nice. Since it was just my wife and I, the lack of other onsite amenities was not important to us; the beach was all we really wanted. One big thing we really appreciated was the fast, simple check-in; no lines to the desk; no "sales" concierge that try to sign you up for their timeshare presentations that we've experienced at other larger resorts; and no other sales pitches for discount coupon books. We plan to make The Golden Strand our new go-to resort in the OBX.

The beach is beautiful.. I didn’t really get much of a southern feel .. lots of local restaurants but we didn’t eat at any one place we thought was fantastic.. I think this would be good for teens and college students who only want a beach and booze .. I like something a little more historic .. the condo location is perfect and the layout and cleanliness is absolutely top notch .. if you like the outer banks this is the condo location for you

We stayed in unit C3, it was not good. The condo is very old, with a rusty odor, and dirty. The furniture was very outdated. The kitchen was old and not well equipped, dirty dinnerware, utensils, even some of the silverware was rusty and smelled bad. If you think you can cook a meal for your family, forget it. The beds in the bedrooms were hard and uncomfortable, we woke up with back aches every day.
Although this condo has two bathrooms, both of them were gross. The shower curtains were slimy and have mold. Showering in those bathroom was disgusting.
At two different times, we saw what the locals call “water bugs” in the living room, they are about 2.5 in, they came from a hole near the door to the balcony, those bugs scared the heck out of us. Unacceptable.
There is only one elevator in this property and it’s located in the complete opposite site to where we were staying. The elevator is old and slow. Many time we chose to take the stairs, about six flats of them, and carrying all the beach stuff, it was not an easy task. Again, unacceptable.
At night time, it’s very dark in the building, the lights are very dim.
The only new thing in this condo appears to be the carpet in the bedrooms.
The only positive thing about this property, it’s the location, being very close to the beach. Other than that, this place is definitely not worth the money we paid for it.
