My wife and I spent five nights at Lower Dover. We used it as a base of operations to visit the ATM caves, Caracol, and Tikal. We also visited San Ignacio on market day. Maddie, the proprietor, was a delight to interact with. She picked us up from the bus stop and, when she was going into San Ignacio for... More

This Lodge is run by a wonderful couple, and Maddy was so kind and friendly to us. The grounds are stunning and wondering along the river is a delight. The food was good and Maddie drove us to a nearby restaurant for dinner as it was her day off cooking. Really kind. Definitely recommend staying here.

The lodge is certainly off the path, but it has everything to offer. There are Mayan ruins on-site, a Belize river access point, a Tarzan swing, many loving dogs, free filtered water, and a wonderful host! I reserved a one-night stay in the dormitory, and I ended up extending my stay another night. The bunkhouse offered an outdoor rainwater shower,... More

Thank you Jennifer T for your positive memories of Lower Dover. Love your comment about changing your schedule to stay an extra night. Since vacations are too brief, many guest's initially see Lower Dover as a budget accommodation with good reviews & accessable by public bus (cheap) and so plan an overnight stay in order to get to further destiations... Had an amazing stay here back in late March. Maddie was extremely accommodating during our stay. The rooms/cabins were super clean, great atmosphere, friendly people, and loved the family style dining. Hands down my favorite place we stayed during our week backpacking Belize. Wish we had been able to stay longer!

Lower Dover was such a treat! We loved the outdoor rainwater shower and front porch of our cabin. The inside was really comfortable too. It was super peaceful and perfectly situated for an afternoon dip in the Belize River. Breakfast was delicious every morning. Meeting other travelers was definitely a highlight. If you're into a backpacker sort of vibe and... More

Thank you for the positive vibrations. When you said, "Overall it was a highlight of our trip." well that makes me smile. The best travel memories go to cool guest like you Kelly who get out of their comfort zone and roll with new experiences; even if that means taking the jammed public bus, awaking too early by farm animals,... I will start with this place is unique and not for everyone. However if you like adventure and new experiences with not your usual hotel, this might be for you. We picked the rasta cabin because it had air conditioning which was a life saver for us. It was not what I would consider cheap but it worked for 3... More

Thanks "TA-radwommman" for the thumbs up review of Lower Dover. I especially appreciate your positive review of JC, (Juan Carlos). He is one of the best independent ATM Cave guides there is. At Lower Dover we try to refer our guest to the small tour operators like JC. His business is small but his heart and impact is huge. As... More

Absolutely LOVED our stay at Lower Dover. The bus from Belize City is easy, and the bus drivers all know Lower Dover and tell you exactly where to get off. We opted to walk in from the hardware store, a short 0.5 mile jaunt. Met by the dog pack -- clearly such a happy and vibrant crew. Maddie welcomed us... More

Lower Dover manages to be minutes away from the main public bus route and a town with everything you'll need and yet... it feels like you're a world away from everything while you stay there. Sleep to the sounds of the jungle, under the clearest, most beautiful night sky I've ever seen in clean, comfortable cabin. What do you want... More

Would definitely recommend this little gem instead of staying in main town San ignacio. Perfect for travellers looking for a stay in the jungle/riverside of Belize. Very easy to meet people as you have breakfast and dinner with other travellers. Maddie and her team makes amazing meals with locally grown products. Furthermore, Maddie can assist with your booking and you... More
