The Mountain is so unique and amazing. The gnarled tiny ancient oaks line the walkways, the soaring vistas stretch for miles before you as you pop out of a rhododendron thicket. You can be as active or as still as you want to be there, with beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces. It's not fancy schmancy, but it's so nourishing. My family's been coming there for over 30 years. I've been there for hooting hollering women for a UUWomenspirit retreat or a small group's quiet Mother's Day weekend or a festive gathering for the winter holidays, and even an exclusive anniversary weekend escape. Once you make it up the twisty road, you won't want to come down, except to walk the labirynth!

This Center is on top of a 4200 ft mountain with spectacular views in every season. The food is healthy and good. The accommodations are simple - very comfortable in the Lodge. My cell phone had good reception all week. There is no TV - it's nice to focus on the great people, enjoying the outdoors and beautiful views. I facilitated a workshop and the staff was attentive and knowledgeable about connecting the technology. A wonderful week at the "Aging to Saging" program.

This visit here was my first in 20 years. The charm of this mountain top retreat continues, but there certainly have been many improvements. They described the cabins as “comfortable, rustic,” but I would emphasize the comfortable and I would say simple rather than rustic. The lodge room continue to be comfortable like a good motel. We, there were three of us, stayed in Milestone cabin which had 4 bedrooms (one had a double bed, while the other three were single beds), two bathrooms (one wheelchair accessible), and a hall which had a small refrigerator. I was particularly pleased that we had good wifi/internet service. Each room had at least three outlets. We were there the last weekend in January, so I can report that the heating units more than adequate. The grounds were well maintained with good hiking trails. The conference facilities were modern and well maintained. The dining room consisted of long tables with regular chairs. The buffet style service seem to accommodate the common food preferences. If you are coming as a private party (there was a group meeting our weekend), I am not sure that the kitchen is always open. I thoroughly enjoyed the food. The staff get well deserved praise for friendly and helpful service.

High atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Highlands of North Carolina is a beautiful and rustic array of cabins, dining hall, labyrinth, tower and so much more! I recently stayed the weekend while attending a conference of over 50 women who traveled from all over the country to be at this wonderful retreat center. Small cabins, as well as a lodge with individual rooms, are the mainstay... along with a comfortable cafeteria style eating hall and another building that accommodates a large gathering with a lower level of smaller rooms for vendors or small gatherings. All of the rooms were clean, comfortable and smelled nice (a must have on my list!). My favorite place to sit and relax is at the Lodge porch- complete with rocking chairs- that overlooks the valley. At 4300 feet above sea level the view is breathtaking! This center is perfect for a private get-a-way or group retreat.

The Mountain has a gorgeous location, super friendly staff, and healthy delicious food. The accommodations are simple, as befits a camp setting, but perfect if you want to convene with nature and enjoy some much needed quiet r & r. I love it and could spend the entire summer there!

I was invited to the Mountain at first as a much needed retreat. Then I got drawn into the scene and the folks and it became a wonderful experience. Its is always a blessing to be there. I went back to volunteer and gained an opportunity to work there. It was the greatest experience ever. I know that the staff is hardworking and committed to maintaining a welcomed home for many wonderful people who come there.

The Mountain is my second home. I grew up coming to this retreat center with my family for weekend retreats. Then I started attending summer camp programs every summer. Once I was too old for camp, I worked two summers as a camp counselor. I met my husband during this summer job. Four years later we invited all of our friends and family to attend our Wedding Weekend on The Mountain. Now eight years later we attend for volunteer opportunities and family programs. We just returned from a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving holiday at The Mountain with my husband's family. The accommodations: The Lodge has had a "makeover" within the last two years and it is really cozy and comfortable. It also has the perk of being one of the accommodations that includes wi-fi access. The cabins, however, are more rustic, but they all include indoor plumbing. More details on lodging are available here: http://mountaincenters.org/pages/accomodations/lodging.php. Dining: Three meals are included in the daily rate. Delicious and nutritious meals are provided by the amazing and friendly kitchen staff. Some of the food is even provided from the farm at the base of The Mountain. They are also very accommodating to dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.). And the salad bar is always well stocked! Amenities: This retreat center is on top of Little Scaly mountain, a one-of-a-kind summit with dwarf white oaks that are at least 400 years old. As soon as you step out of the car, the smell of rhododendron and mountain laurel will take all of your cares away. This is an ideal location for rest and relaxation. There are multiple forms of entertainment too: fireplaces, outdoor fire rings, foosball, ping pong, board games and puzzles galore, plenty of scenic views (including a 360 degree view from the tower), pianos, a labyrinth, amazing star-gazing, a library, a lake, multiple hiking trails on-site, and even more trails and waterfalls within a very short driving distance. There are a plethora of meeting spaces if you want to bring a group retreat to The Mountain. People: The Mountain staff is a critical element to what makes this place so special. They are the most welcoming, warm and friendly people you will ever meet. This is what makes this place feel like home. The Mountain also seems to attract a variety of groups and individuals that are always up for good conversation.

The Mountain, as people call it, continues to draw our family into it's community. We started going 9 years again when my daughter went to a over night camp. We realized that it is not only a camp, but a retreat center, a lodge, and a nurturing community. We came back again for retreats with our Unitarian Universilist community. We have stayed in the lodge, simple yet clean, a cabin, that holds nice groups, a smaller cabin, and a youth cabin. No matter where you stay, the views are amazing. Also, the mountain cook staff accomadates all of our diets, which range from vegan, to gluten free, to carnivore. I never felt like an outsider. We love that there are hiking trail directly from the mountain top. A short ride to waterfalls and the beautiful town of Highlands. A perfect place to have a retreat or a small or large group event. Even thought the ride from our home is long, we keep going back. Best kept secret but not any more.

The campus of the Mountain Retreat covers the entire top of the mountain. It is fairly primitive and the views are amazing. It offers a number of cabins, a lodge (hotel), meeting rooms, Dining Hall, Playground, volley ball, campfire and fire-tower. This is a non-denominational retreat that offers the seclusion to study, meditate, or just take in the peacefulness the area offers. You may want to bring a comfortable pillow, extra towels and a flashlight for night time walking. The is no A/C in the cabins, only heat. Each cabin has four bunkbeds and two regular twin size beds in a seperate room. The food was pretty good for the few days my group was there. They focus on an all natural menu, not the commercial Sysco type food. No TV, radios, clocks, pots or pans.
