A full-service inn on the north fork of the New River, near West Jefferson and not far from Boone in the northwest corner of North Carolina. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we are far from the bustle of everyday life. There's a mile of riverfront for strolling, wading, tubing, canoeing and fishing. Brown trout and rainbows abound. Walking trails wind through 170 acres. Our uniquely decorated guestrooms are converted farm buildings and feature king-size beds, private bathrooms, jacuzzis, art, books and country antiques.

Had a lovely 4 day stay here in Ashe Co. exploring the area and enjoying the friendly folks and fabulous food here! Stayed in the spacious Chicken House-once we figured out the gas logs which heated very thoroughly, we enjoyed our stay there more (chilly nights!). Rustic accommodation but very comfy king bed and 2 bathrooms! Thanks to Gayle Winston our delightful inn keeper. We will be back!

The Inn under normal Pre-Covid circumstances could be described as a quaint, get away with a quiet atmosphere overlooking the river and the nearby mountains. But with the situation as it is in NC, I was very disappointed to see little regard for the state mandated mask (facial covering rule) social distancing or special hygiene requirements. The staff on Friday night had no masks on, the overflow bar area was packed with people unmasked and the bartender had no mask. The guests overall were about 50% mask wearing but not in the restaurant. After driving 4 hours into the rural mountains we stayed despite concerns that lasted all weekend. Breakfast staff wore masks, the very friendly elderly owner did not have a mask on ever.... asking to sit outdoors was our best option for dinner but not allowed on first night, told "we would have to reset a table". One guest complained and the reply was the staff can't breathe with masks on. The room was very small, food above average but not sure I would recommend in light of the above Covid concerns. This pandemic and its dangers are real not a hoax. We probably should have just left.

So, completely honest review, our vacation started out ROUGH. We had the carriage room, which I do not recommend. The jacuzzi was broken and the room smelled a little like mildew. HOWEVER after I brought these concerns to them they were quick to address our concerns and moved us to room 5 which was delightful and had none of these problems. The rest of our 4 day stay was magical. Breakfast was delicious every morning and our server couldnt have been better. We had a great time kayaking and I enjoyed relaxing on the porch swing. They bring you coffee in the mornings and leave it outside your door and that was an awesome way to start the day. They're pet friendly which was a huge thing for me and my pets had an amazing time too. The only criticisms I had once they moved us were personal preferences. The bed was a little firm but some people enjoy that, and they dont give out room keys which made my husband uneasy while we left to explore. Other than those things, everything was relaxing and magical! Definitely would visit again.

When you walk in the door and meet Gayle Winston you become part of her huge extended family. Her warmth and charm match perfectly with the environment you have just entered. We entered thru the bar area(full bar with great wine selections) and were greeted with the most tantalizing smells coming from her kitchen. I was really looking forward to dining there now! We stayed two nights in the Wee Cottage. A perfect place for a romantic weekend for two! Extremely comfortable bed, Jaccuzzi tub, fireplace, candles, a kitchen to chill your champagne and a great porch. Need I say more?? We had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant. Breakfast was included with your stay. Great French Toast, bacon, mushroom/cheese omelets, fresh fruit, homemade jam and muffin. The breakfast menu changes with about 6 choices or so, all excellent! For dinner a private dining room had been booked as we had 16 people in our party. We started with a few wonderful hors devours made especially for us; Dates stuffed with chorizo wrapped in candied bacon, Smoked trout in pastry and mini herb/cheese quiche. Next were mixed salad greens with a seasonal touch, warm rolls and then the most flavorful filet mignon I have ever had! All 16 were perfectly cooked to order. Gayle has a wonderful staff to take care of you whether it in the bar, dining room or in your cottage. If you need anything, just ask and they will do everything to make sure your stay is exceptional. We were delighted and very fortunate that we had booked our room at the Inn on a weekend that they had scheduled The Music of Emile Pandolfi accompanied by Vocalist Jennifer Roberts. All I can say is WOW!!! So, go the River House and Inn for dinner, for a break from a very hectic world or stay in one of the adorable rooms on the property. Make sure to take time and have a glass of wine with Gayle, you will never be the same.
