The Sanderling hotel garners mixed reviews; its picturesque location near Duck and inviting beach and pool facilities are frequently praised. However, guests have called out issues with room odors, cleanliness, and worn amenities, detracting from the overall charm. Service experiences vary, with commendations for staff friendliness contrasted by complaints of inefficiency. While the atmosphere's allure is noted, critiques of the hotel's dated decor and perceived poor value suggest that it may not meet everyone's expectations for the cost.

Our stay at the Sanderling Resort was wonderful. It is a very nice property right on the ocean. We stayed 8 days in an O.V. King room. The room had a small deck with 2 comfortable chairs. Our view was of the pool, the dunes & the ocean. There is a hot tub, Fire pits, and also a snack shack for lunches. There are also some outdoor porch areas for sitting right in the back of the resort. They should have someone to bring drinks to serve people sitting there. Our room was adequate but very non descript. There is a great large bathroom. The king size bed needed a new mattress as it was soft & somewhat lumpy. I woke every morning with a back ache. The places where they could really bring this up to 5 stars are the following: At least 2 bottles of water in the room each day; pool & beach service. If you want lunch at the pool or on the beach, you must go to the Snack Shack, order your lunch & drinks & take them back yourself. Not very helpful for older patrons: Room service would be very nice, especially for breakfast. Some updated decor in the rooms & better mattresses. All of that said, the resort is in a beautiful location , the beach was GREAT & very uncrowded, & it is very peaceful. We loved our time there & will probably return.

Hello, Thank you for your thoughtful review! We’re delighted to hear that you had a wonderful stay at Sanderling Resort and enjoyed our beautiful location right on the ocean. It sounds like you made the most of our amenities, from the hot tub and fire pits to the snack shack and outdoor porch areas. We appreciate your suggestions for improvements. We’re actively working on enhancing our guest experience and will definitely consider adding pool and beach dining service to make it more convenient, especially for our older patrons. The idea of room service, particularly for breakfast, is also something we’ll look into. We’re glad you found the beach uncrowded and peaceful, and that you enjoyed the views from your room. Thank you for choosing to stay with us for eight days. We look forward to welcoming you back and providing an even better experience next time. The Sanderling is located on a really special spot. Perfect stretch of beach on one side. Gorgeous sunset on the other. The hotel itself was beautiful and laid out well. The staff were wonderful. There are three things that could be improved: (1) The food situation was a bit dire. The hours of the restaurants were weird. We had a hard time finding a place to eat often. (2) The restaurants were extremely short staffed. The staff members were wonderful, but they needed more people. (3) The facilities were very run down for the price. The rooms and hallways could use a fresh coat of paint.

This was our fourth time at Sanderling. It is a beautiful, secluded location, the beach isn’t very busy which we love! The beach is shallow with great waves to ride. Lots of flora and fauna. We saw dolphins every morning and a deep with its babies. Many fishes swim at the ocean and the kids had fun to catch them. Beach chairs and umbrellas are nice but could use some new paint. Pools are nice, the kids pool needs more working umbrellas! Trash cans should be emptied more often.- they were overflowing . I loved the idea of free kids toys on the beach! The rooms are clean and spacious — our cleaning lady Vernette was the best! I was a bit saddened to see how unmotivated most staff was. I asked for a second umbrella and got an eye roll. We ate at the sand bar and first the waitress brought a wrong dish, then forgot to refill my coke and brought my eight year old an cocktail instead of his lemonade— I complained but was laughed at. I really do not mind the first two things ( things can happen) but the alcohol in a kids drink was not acceptable. The food at lifesaving station definitely was better than the years b before. We ate five times there. They noodles and soup were awesome. The staff was very inattentive, slow and overworked. I am understanding of many things but if you pay 150$ for a meal you do expect a bit more for the service. Betty was great though— she looked clearly stressed but was very attentive and delivered a good service. Also make sure you reserve your table right away when you reserve your room otherwise you will have to eat before 6 pm. The overall feeling is that this is a beautiful location but nobody cares for the details because there are enough people who will come either way,

The property location is in a nice quiet area, close to the town of Duck. There’s a lot of restaurants and shops in the town which is convenient. The resort itself is ok. The lobby is nice and well kept. The staff were all very friendly. The room and building we stayed in was clean on the surface but it was evident that deep cleaning has not been done on a regular basis. The room and especially the closet had a very musty smell. There were marks from dead bugs on the walls of the room, the carpet in the room and hallway/stairs had a lot of stains. The screen of the door to the balcony in our room was in bad shape with several holes (hence the dead bug marks). It was surprising that there was no microwave in the room. We were also disappointed to find out when we arrived that one of the restaurants on property was closed for the season. The restaurants that were open were fine but way overpriced for the quality of the food. It would be nice to have some grab and go options on property to take items to the beach, snacks/sandwiches, We ended up going into Duck to pick up some items at the market instead of the mediocre, pricey food at the restaurant. The pool and hot tub were nice, and it was great to have chairs/umbrellas available for the beach. Overall, it was fine but for the cost of the room per night it was disappointing and not worth the price we paid. We have stayed at other places that were less expensive and cleaner. Based on that we probably won’t stay again.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, Ellen. We’re happy you enjoyed our quiet location near Duck, with its charming shops and restaurants, and appreciated our friendly staff, pool, and beach setup. We hope you had a chance to explore Duck Rd and Kitty Hawk as well. Your feedback on the room's cleanliness and overall condition is important to us, and we want to assure you that the resort will undergo a significant renovation this winter to address many of the areas you mentioned, including updating the rooms and addressing maintenance concerns. We understand the importance of comfortable accommodations and want all our guests to feel fully at ease during their stay. As for dining, we appreciate your input on pricing and the limited options during your visit. We will look into offering more grab-and-go selections in the future. We’re confident these upcoming enhancements will elevate the guest experience, and we hope you’ll give us another chance to show you the improvements next time you visit the Outer Banks.

I really wanted to like this resort as the location is amazing and we spent $3k for 4x days. We arrived after a long drive to find the a/c in our room not working. The engineering tech came and fixed it after about an hour, it never went below 74 F the entire stay. The room was run down and not like the pictures. The balcony was filthy, hadn't been swept in a long time and was full of mosquitoes and spiders. We couldn't enjoy this area. The pool was absolutely filthy the first day with lots of bugs and hair in it. It seemed to be cleaner later in our stay. Staff seems to miss the details that matter, towel carts empty 3 out of 4 days requiring extra trips to the front desk. They offered water in the lobby but there were never any cups available / refilled. Housekeeping only came 1x to refresh our room. The resort wasn't that busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff. Staff was nice and helpful when asked for assistance but did not seem to be proactive. The resort is generally in need of a renovation and more focus on the guests experience. This was a very poor value for the price and I'd just rent a house next time we visit the area. On a positive note, the beach and location is excellent.

Everything is said with a Rating of 2*
The spot is just crazy.
This is our second stay at this hotel but I think it was the last.
Cleanliness is not on the table. Certainly the location is crazy but when you pay more than 1000$ per room with in addition to resort fees you can expect much better.
The service is 0. 2h to be served at the beach restaurant. The exteriors are not maintained swimming pool + jaccuzzi full of sand. Nobody restocks towels around the pool.
And the rooms ..... ageing. The carpet is full of stains and I am not talking about common areas.
It is clear that it lacks staff but in any case, we customers pay the highest Award
Even if 1 renovation is planned at the end of the year this will not solve the problems of cleanliness outside.
It may be a 4* for the location but not for the rest.
We'd have to start over.

Where do I begin? I originally booked a room with laminate floors, what I got checked in to was a room that was filthy with disgusting carpets and a dirty old humidifier in the room. Cobwebs and mold on ceiling with a gross smell in the room. When you are spending over $700 a night you don’t expect a holiday inn.
Tried to switch rooms, front desk said sold out of 2 queen beds.
Hallway carpets and stairs going up were absolutely filthy and full of dirt. Not once did they vacuum or try and wash the carpets. Disney washes and vacuums their carpets, especially in high traffic areas. I was so grossed out. The rooms and buildings need a major renovation.
Pool chairs were ripped, one even had a hole in it. Some of the Towels were faded and gross. Pool needs an upgrade as well.
We ate at lifesaving station and while our waiter was great, food was sub par with flies everywhere.
Lobby area was nice.
I couldn’t wait to leave and will not ever return.

Minor in room issues included carpet stains, TV not working properly, housekeeping didn't clean room one day out of 5, no fresh towels 1 day out of 5. In my opinion, the resort needs some overall TLC, maintenance, cleaning, and more staffing. We were happy with the Lifesaving Station restaurant, the tranquility pool/hot tub, and loved the resort provided beach chairs and umbrellas and the fact that we didn’t have to pick up our chairs and umbrellas everyday. The fresh beach towels were also great. The beach and pool was never overly crowded and we were able to relax. We would love to see improvement by the resort overall as it has potential to be so much better and would recommend to others

As others have mentioned, the hotel could use a renovation but a thorough cleaning and general upkeep at the very least would help. Rooms, hallways and most common areas all look tired and dated. Simple things like clearing of cobwebs on balcony's, painting, power washing and a deep carpet clean would go a long way to help bring the hotel more in line more with the nightly rates charged.

The property is very pretty, situated right on the beach. Although guests with families are relegated to the kids pool, which looks like it got the 15 year old left over furniture from the adults only pool. Old and worn loungers and no food/drink service are what you should expect if you have kids.

In general, service seemed to be lacking. Most employees were nice and helpful but it seemed like the property was running on the bare bones amount of staff. A truly 4-star "resort" should also offer food/drink service not only at the adult pool, but also at the beach and family pool. This seems like a no brainer and a missed revenue opportunity for the hotel.

At the end of the day, the hotel is really the only game in town so why would they be incentivized to do better or provide added value. I probably wouldn't return until the hotel went through a renovation given the rates charged.

I have been coming to Sanderling for many years. The deterioration of the rooms and hallways is shocking. While the pools and beach and location are amazing, the facilities look so run down and dirty. I am here a few more days and I would love to have the general manager come to my room while I am here to show him all the issues. I won’t even walk barefoot in my room because the carpet is literally dark brown and stained. The hallways too. It makes me so sad that things like carpet cleaning are not done. Also, ours screens for our windows are literally on the floor. The screen of our patio door is broken. I don’t know when the last time the room was painted but it is scuffed everywhere. For over $700 a night, it’s frustrating. Until I know the rooms have been renovated, this will be my last visit.

Also there use to be an employee every morning on the beach setting people up. I was on the beach 10 hours yesterday and saw no one. At the landing of the beach are busted up umbrellas and chairs just sitting there. Again if the GM is around I would love to walk around for 10 minutes and point all this out. Not sure how often he or she does that. The stairs to beach are never swept so they fill up with sand and can be dangerous to use.

Again the location is amazing and employees are very sweet. Food and service at Lifesaving station was great. But facilities are horrible. If you want detailed pics let me know. And to the GM, contact me and I’ll show you everything personally. And if you say you are aware of this, then shame for not updating pics on the website and offering discounted rates in acknowledgement of the run down condition of the property.
