First time there and it was an experience! A step back in time. Dinner was wonderful!! The owner came up to see how we were doing and ask where we were from and how we found the place. I had no idea she was the owner and the history behind the fact that she had bought it twice until I... More

We only had a 2 day visit, but the wonderful historic inn did wonders for us -- beautifully restored common areas and rooms, delicious breakfasts and dinners, and great rocking chairs on the front porches of each level overlooking the mountains.

Had an overall "meh" experience at the Balsam Mountain Inn. On the positive side, the place was very unique and staff was very friendly. Even in July, it was comfortable in the rooms with a fan running. The place is exactly as described in their advertisements. On the negative side, the place is quaint but in need of some repairs... If you want a vacation with no tv ,phone or wifi this is your place! This beautiful old country inn has such charm . It has a relaxing, friendly environment with rocking chairs all around the big porch with beautiful views of the lovely yard. They have terrific musicians that perform during the summer months and great dinners . This was... More

We book two nights at Balsam. My parents stayed here many years ago. Over all our stay was ok. Our room was at the back of the inn on the first floor. The only issue was that around 5am staff starts arriving and with the windows open you can hear the cars driving by and people talking as they go... More

Come stressed and leave relaxed. No tv, no ac, but wonderful friendly people. Games, puzzles, front porch rockers. Unique rooms, awsome food in the dining room. The owner also lives on the property and is very gracious. By the way if you read the review that said it was not a full breakfast that person did not take the time... More

.......... situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where there is no A/C, but you don't need it, no television, no in room telephone, and limited internet, but with good cell service. Imagine a hotel listed on the national register of historic places built in 1905. Imagine rocking chairs on the front porch and fireflies at dusk. Imagine an owner who... More

We came during the week with our friend who drove up from Georgia. We had two rooms and both were beautiful. See the website for all the room photos. When I say beautiful, I do not mean sleek chrome and glass and posh furnishing. I mean comfortable, good quality, eccentric and quaint. The bathroom was a hoot and my husband's... More

I loved this hotel. My husband loved this hotel. This is not the sort of place for everyone. It's not generic. It's unique. Every room is different, every room reminded me of my favorite aunts' homes - from the transoms over the doors to the creaky steps to the separate tub room (2nd floor, end unit) This place reminded me... Scary place! Looked haunted! Won't do it again. On Saturday night we were the only guests there. Nice view of the mountain. No tv and bad internet reception. Keep your noise to a minimum. Floors have no insulation so when you walk it sounds so loud.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Read, rest, ramble and romp at the Balsam Mountain Inn! Nestled among lofty Smoky Mountain peaks just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Balsam Mountain Inn was completed in 1908 to serve the highest railway depot in the east. Restored in 1991, the inn now welcomes travelers with 50 cheerful rooms, rocker-filled porches, a fine library and gracious dining. Plump pillows and soft comforters inspire pleasant dreams! In December, 2011, the Inn came once again to be owned by Merrily Teasley, the innkeeper who restored the structure two decades ago. An experienced rescuer of wonderful buildings, Teasley bought the derelict inn in 1990, and her certified rehabilitation effort helped the inn – already on the National Historic Register – experience a rebirth. ... more   less
