We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Leighton Lodge. We came to Opito Bay just for a couple of hours three years ago and decided we wanted to come back for a stay. The attraction for us was its isolation - no bars, restaurants or shops, just a glorious beach with very few people

Maire and Wally are ideal hosts - really warm and likeable people, helpful about local sightseeing, respectful of our privacy when we wanted it. The self contained downstairs unit provided everything we wanted (beautifully appointed) and although downstairs still gave us a

A huge thank you to Maree and Wally who accepted our eleventh hour reservation, quickly made up the extra bed for our kids and made us feel completely at home during our stay. Opito Bay is such a beautiful, peaceful destination, and Leighton Lodge the perfect getaway while

BRILLIANT! Is the only word to describe this delightful get-away place in an "off-the-beaten-track" destination at Opito Bay. It's 10km of gravel road from Kuaotunu (halfway between Whitianga and Coromandel Town) but worth every kilometre for the fantastic unspoilt beach at

We now make jokes about it, but this place was terrible. after a long journey, My sister got put on an uncomfortable camp bed in the living room, we were in a tiny back room, looking out onto ugly prefab houses next door. The owners had advised us to buy dinner there, so we each

What a pity guests do not make their complaints at the time of their stay . What the writer of this complaint appears to not know is that at the time the single person of this group made the booking she was specifically offered another room, but chose to take the sofa bed in the living area of the Seahorse Suite. The Pacific Room would have cost more of course. I doubt our neighbours, on whom the Seahorse Suite bedroom looks out would appreciate the comments about the prefab house. Their home is a substantial two storey plastered house. Further away there are some smaller baches. Regarding dinner these guests shared the same meal as our Danish visitors whose review said "it was like coming home and being spoiled". The Danish visitors dined here all 3 nights of their stay. Their review on a different website gave us the highest possible ranking. A complimentary bottle of wine is included with dinner. Because these guests wanted different wines they received two complimentary bottles of wine. I'm disappointed they did not like the meal as during dinner they expressed their satisfaction and returned for 2nd helpings. One person ion the party was offered pate for an entrée because she did not like watermelon. I apologise if these guests took offence at any comments my husband may have made. These guests arrived late and left early the next morning because of their tight schedule. The only criticism we received when they stayed was that it was raining. If they did not wish to stay at rural out of the way places they could have researched their choice more carefully. Most people who choose to stay here enjoy the peace and tranquillity. For a more accurate and unbiased view readers could refer to the Lonely Planet Guide.

"ask for the double with the balcony!"
"If you plan to go you can arrange ahead of time with the owners to have dinner on arrival as there are no places to eat in Opito Bay. Opito Bay is populated with New Zealanders. It is very small as it is mainly set up as a place of summer homes that are mostly unoccupied during the cooler seasons. The Leighton Lodge B & B owners live there 12 months of the year."
