5 couples booked to stay overnight to attend a group function on the 6th May. On arrival 2 of the couples were told their rooms were unavailable despite bookings having been made more than 4 weeks in advance Many and varied excuses were offered, none believable. One couple were offered relocation in a nearby alternative, and discussing their situation realised this was not a uncommon occurrence; and in fact this second provider was often called on to help out with clean linen and other assistance. The second couple were simply told they needed to go somewhere else. Despite being assure this was 5 star accommodation we found it to be well below that standard. The "manager's" claim that he was under staffed ( he appeared to be on his own at all times we met) fell on deaf ears as this should be easily rectified by a property of this purported acclaim. An excellent night was had when we eventually gathered. Not at this Motel and no thanks to them. NEVER AGAIN!!

I stayed at the Castlemaine Colonial Motel for the weekend with my Dad and brother. The room was clean with comfortable beds and ample hot water for 3 people to have showers. The shower and bathroom were also a good size; I’ve been to places where it’s impossible to sit comfortably on the toilet where they’ve been wedged in or the shower stalls have been so small one can’t turn around. Not in this case. On the subject of rooms, I found it pleasing that there were two bedrooms within the motel room. As there were 2 men and 1 woman sharing this room, the 2 bedrooms made for a much easier time with getting dressed and undressed. The motel manager (?) Matthew was very nice and pleasant to deal with during the booking, check-in process and during our stay. For these reasons, I’d LIKE to be able to give the motel a higher rating. Unfortunately I don’t feel comfortable giving 4 stars due to the following: 1) Inadequate parking - cars had to parallel park in VERY tight spaces. If Dad hadn’t been there, I would’ve really struggled. I’d hate to have had a 4WD or SUV. 2) Poor quality towels - towels were very small like what I’d use for a floor towel at home. I was lucky; the boys gave me the big bed, which came with 2 towels (assumed it’d be sleeping 2 people) so I was able to use the 2. Even then they felt inadequate. We had to ask specially for a floor towel. 3) Locks - no chain on the door and the lock looked to be cheap and low quality. Due to lack of safe and/or lockable cupboards, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my ipad in the room. 4) Lack of available staff on site - Dad went to ask about a couple of things at reception yet half the time nobody was there. On the Sunday night at 5:00 pm, two women who’d just arrived came knocking at our door to ask if we knew how to contact the motel staff having advised them there was nobody at reception.

If I could give 3.5 stars I would. But I gave 3. Three stars might be a bit unjust. Might. The family room we were in was better than Average but not really Very Good. Hence not a FOUR. The room was clean, the beds comfortable, and the showers hot. But from the advertising on line I had hoped for a spa bath. There was a bath, one metre square, which would be ok if you were under five years old. But useless for adults. No breakfast in the room that I could see - certainly no ordering menu. Nor a hatch to deliver the meal anyway, despite the claim in the motel literature that hot breakfasts can be put through the hatch. I think the blurb must be very out of date. The provided cutlery did not look all that clean, but we always bring our own anyway. There was a fitting on the door for a safety chain, but no chain. And no safe in the room to store valuables. As the door lock was of the cheapest I was reluctant to leave my iPad when we went out. Parking was very tight, not much room. Big SUVs may have problems. These are all little things but that is where stars are won or lost. The receptionist, Matthew, was friendly and keen to please. But he seemed to disappear quite a lot. I think he was on his own. This didn’t affect us but two ladies rolled up just after 5pm only to find Reception closed. They were a bit panicked, we hoped they reached him on the emergency AH number. So, a bit variable. I think the high rating this motel has may be due to past performance. It is not 4.5 now, based on my stay.

We were very lucky to get into this motel on the Anzac Day weekend because there had been a late cancellation. Our luxury suite (No 18) is at the end of the old Methodist schoolhouse building and features a huge roof space, king bed, spa bath, a kitchenette and sitting room. Slightly off putting are the marble plaques which commemorate deaths from 1906 including one which alludes to a former headmaster "suddenly called to his eternal home". However, with the heater on the room proved to be quiet and comfortable. The bedcovers were edged with lace but kept us warm .

My partner booked the king suite No.19, the room was huge, the bed was very comfy but we arrived for check in time at 2pm we were told room wasn't ready so we had to wait for 45 minutes. Then we had no wifi at all, overhead cobwebs looming from the rafters on the ceiling. The spa bath is dangerous...it needs handrails to get into spa. At night there were no lights outside...which is a safety issue..there are 2 steps before entering suite, with no lights outside on entry. No cooking facilities but in the cupboard is a metal frypan and egg ring...what is the point of that?
