I stayed there 2 nights before and after the Mgahinga Gorilla treking. I didn't book before, just went there, checked the rooms and booked. I stayed in the dorm room for $10 without breakfast, but you can order your breakfast in the evening. They wake up early and prepare it, it worked well for me. I also got a hot shower and quite good wifi, sometimes I used my data when it failed. The room was clean and comfy, they staff is very nice and helpful - they woke me up for the gorilla tracking as I didn't change the time in my clock and stayed on Rwandan time - almost was late for the track! It's right next to the Mgahinga Park office where you can book and pick your permit. It's a good place overall.

I stayed here for three nights. The staff, as mentioned, are very kind and eager to help. I arrived after 9pm after lots of public transportation challenges and they were quick to help me arrange a morning hike of Sabinyo the next day at 6:30! My private room was exactly what it needed to be- warm with power and running water. The hot water is a bit on the lukewarm side. The rooms are named by country and Tanzania does not have water, but I found Sudan to be agreeable. You can always ask for hot water for basin bathing if you are so inclined. Also I suggest taking advantage of the laundry services. They did a great job with my clothes and even my hiking boots after Sabinyo! The wifi is spotty, but they have a wide variety of options for food, even making me kikomando upon request :)

I chose the budget option for my gorilla tour, which included Golden Monkey for 2 nights. Ok, lets be honest, this is a budget, backpacker-type place. The rooms seem old, electricity doesn't always work, my room had no external window (except the bathroom), the surfaces are old, and hard to keep super-clean like a Hilton, and the bathroom was small. But as backpacker lodges go, it had a good vibe - mainly because the staff were great, friendly, keen to help where they could, everyone seemed to get on, and they seemed to enjoy their work, which made for a great atmosphere. Come for the value, the location, and the vice, but if you love Hiltons,, you'll be in the wrong place....

I would recommend this place if you stay in the private rooms. They are clean, well furnished and have instant hot water. The staff will treat you like family. I showed up at 9pm and they arranged my transportation to the Gorillas for the next day and everything was very professional and on time (definitely recommend Dennis as a driver!). There is a nice aaccommodating restaurant attached with good food. I would not recommend the dorms unless they make some upgrades. The shower does not have hot water which isn't a deal breaker where hot water is a luxury in Africa, however the shower head doesn't work properly and water only comes out in a single stream from the middle. The dorm has a pretty dank smell and there were no light bulbs, this may have been fixed though.

OK, well this is Africa so don't expect western type standards and this is really a backpackers type guest house. The rooms are small but ours had a double bed with mosquito net and a shower room. There are hooks to hang your clothes but no wardrobe or cupboard. Just a single plastic chair. The shower room had hot water but we did not seem to be able to get it to work, but the cold shower was quite refreshing! The toilet had a suspect flush that occasionally worked. The bed clothes were clean but the room felt grubby. Food is inexpensive and tasty - cooked on a charcoal grill so you need to order it well in advanced if you want it at a special time. Wifi is free and good. The best part of our stay was the ever smiling, friendly and helpful staff who welcomed us back each day with a hug and genuine pleasure. They provided packed lunch and even breakfast at 5am when we went for an early morning gorilla trek. Drinks - you helped your self from the fridge (not always working) on an honesty basis. Avery homely and friendly place that we would return to.
