The venerable "Emerson on Hurumzi", Grande Dame of restored palaces in Zanzibar has returned to service under the acclaimed management of "Emerson Spice". The same majestic building with the same spectacular views is developing a new concept of lunch and dinner. Designed to marry the culture and style of the building with the distinct culinary heritage of the era, The main house that today hosts Emerson on Hurumzi has particular historical significance since it was where the abolition and emancipation of slaves occurred in the 1870's. The recent refurbishment attempts to maintain the quality and style of the period in which it was built in the late 1800's whilst combining period antique furnishings with colour and comfort of the 21st century, a curiously magnificent building with historical significance and unique style.

Emerson rooftop has the best view of Stone Town and the ocean. It has an Arabic style, and you will have to take off your shoes and sit on pillows at the floor. Friendly and beautifully dressed staff. Perfect to relax, enjoy a nice cocktail or food and enjoy the sunset.

Good location and quite easy to find. Breakfast great (Tea/coffee, great fruits, (french)toast & pancakes with butter and jam)... variable breakfast but always fresh foodstuff and good taste! We had also dinner in rooftop terrace - great Experience too. There is nothing to complain about staff and rooms. Staff is friendly, kind and very helpfull. When you'll arrive they let you know everything... and even more👍. We got AC + Fan topfloor room, Wi-Fi ok. Room was big enough, clean and comfortable. Roomcleaning every day. Hotel is VERY unique and atmosphere is historical, nice and peacefull. Design is very inspiring and just awesome Premium class service and attitude👍 Absolutely worth for the money, If you are looking unique, clean, peacefull accomodation in middle of stonetown. Everything is inside walking distance. We were not bothered by this, but the hotel has many steep stairs but no elevator, so getting around the hotel for disabled people is really challenging - just for the info!

It's one of the hotel in Zanzibar where it's original structures are still exits. Zanzibarian style and local culture still exits. The hotelier are having stunning Arabian clothes that's one of the attraction too. Wide rooms with beautiful furnitures, plus stunning stone Stone Town streets views. And it has roof top to have amazing Sunset.

We booked a table for 4 and were asked to arrive around 6pm (as we were staying elsewhere) to enjoy the sunset from the roof terrace and also so that we would be there for when service started at 7pm. This all sounded great as did the traditional music that accompanied the dinner. We were hoping for a relaxed dinner with stunning views and background music. What we got was a reasonable dinner, stunning views but not exactly background music. The thing that really ruined the evening for us was when the singer walked around collecting money and the waiter shouted down the stairs after us to not forget to write a TA review. We had hoped for an experience that matched the upmarket price and in all honesty the money would have been better spent on another roof top!

Response from Management Emerson on Hurumzi, General Manager at Emerson on Hurumzi

Dear guest, Thank you for writing a review about our restaurant. I am sorry that you were not able to fully appreciate the evening. The evening experience in our restaurant gives in various ways an experience of Zanzibari traditions and provides an insight into Zanzibar cuisine and culture. It is a pity that this did not match your expectations. During dinner service, the musicians of the Dhow Countries Music Academy play traditional Taarab music. They usually play a few songs, pause during the call to prayer, and another short break a bit later. The musicians as well as the academy are properly paid for the performances, and require no further donations. During the evening they will explain a bit more about the school and invite guests to the concerts that are organised there. The musicians do not walk around collecting money, however it might be that other guests tipped the singer, who moves through the restaurant, which is a common gesture, especially among Zanzibaris when traditional music is performed, but this is absolutely not a must. On a future visit to Stone Town, perhaps we may welcome you to our restaurant during lunch, to enjoy the daytime views over Stone Town and the sea. The Tea House restaurant at Emerson Spice is also a good option for those who like to try an interesting meal in beautiful surroundings. Kind regards, Lisenka and the team of Emerson on Hurumzi
