I popped in here as I walked past and had a look at the rooms as the place I had just checked into was below expectations. As it was low season and they were empty, they offered me an excellent rate for the suite on the top floor and I decided I would move the following day. However, on getting... More

This is an excellent small boutique hotel. You can sense the history in the building, with heavy wooden furniture and doors, long sets of stairs, and interesting decor throughout. It is obvious that staff and owners take pride in the fine details of the hotel. All staff were smiling, professional, and knowledgeable. Wifi was good. The rooms are large, well-decorated, with... Situated opposite the Serena Inn and near to the soon to be opened Hyatt hotel, this bijou hotel shares some illustrious neighbours and is sited in a quiet square near the beach front and within easy strolling distance of all Stone Town’s main attractions. There is no lift in this old building, but the staff willingly carried our (heavy) bags... More

If you like small hotels with character, Beyt al Salaam ("House of Peace") is for you. It's in the Shangani district of Stone Town, just a couple of minutes from the sea. The hotel has recently been refurbished and rooms are decorated in "local" style, albeit with modern conveniences like electronic key, safe, mini-bar - and the large flat screen... More

Beautiful hotel, reasonably priced, tasty food in the restaurant (try the coconut crab soup - amazing) and super helpful staff who were brilliant when our flights were cancelled. Would wholeheartedly recommend a stay here if you're in stone town.

We have just returned from 3 months in Africa. As we made our way out of Tanzania, we spent 6 nights in Zanzibar, 3 of which were in the Beyt al Salaam. As we were in the period of "Ramadan" things were a little different, as in a little quieter, we had a wonderful time. Zanzibar is steeped in history,... More

We popped in for late dinner and received excellent service. The coconut crab soup is the best I ever had and it is served in fresh coconut shell. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
For those who want to experience the charm of a classic Zanzibar setting with a touch of ancient Arabian mystique, the place is Beyt Al Salaam, formerly known as Beyt Al Chai. This is an exquisite 10-room boutique hotel within a traditional Zanzibar house, built on 3 floors in what was once a tea house. Sitting only a few paces from the sea, the house is cool and breezy. On a typical day, guests relax in our beautifully appointed lounge and rooms overlooking a square filled with hibiscus and ancient tamarind trees - simultaneously feeling the pull of the mysterious Indian Ocean that lies just beyond the trees and soaking up the ambiance of this World Heritage Site only steps away from the shops, restaurants and attractions of contemporary Zanzibar. ... more   less
