The only Protea in the beautiful Zanzibar, Protea Hotel by Marriott Zanzibar Mbweni Ruins provides the perfect choice for both beach and Stone Town holidays in Zanzibar. We are located amidst Mbweni Ruins dating back to 1870s and a beautiful botanical garden. The hotel is ten minutes away from Stone Town, airport, ferry terminal and the CBD of Zanzibar. Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins is a cozy boutique hotel offering serene accommodations amidst a rare blend of history, greenery and ocean with a beautiful beach. Traditional Zanzibar hospitality at its best is offered at an affordable price. It's a hotel that complements your travel style. The site where the hotel is built was once an old Arab house, which was then bought by UMCA missionaries in 1871 to build a school for girls. The hotel makes a perfect base for exploring Stone Town.

We visited Protea Mbweni ruins twice in March. Very nice both times with very efficient & friendly staff. Good menue, both on the food & drinks side, with reasonable pricing. Very nice location where you can sit outside and enjoy the great views over the sea & sunset. Well cooked food served in reasonable time. Altogether a place really well worth visiting🦞

This hotel is very conveniently located = not far from the airport, and not far from Stone Town. The Reception area is in the Mbweni Ruins which gives it a very romantic touch when you arrive. The Hotel complex itself is in a wonderful tropical garden. The Beach is clean and lovely, Sunbathing is very relaxing. The Hotel has a walkway out into the ocean and a lovely cocktail desk. All staff friendly and helpful at all times, and food was also very decent and not costly. A great beach place for family or honeymooners!

First of all the location is magnificent, the ruins around the property are very mystic and give a unique charm to this hotel. Then the long white sand beach west oriented offers breathtaking sunsets. Staff is extremely friendly and rooms are spacious and comfortable. Finally it is perfectly located between Stone Town and the airport. Great stay !

We spent three days in Zanzibar before going on a Serengeti Safari. The hotel is small and intimate. The food is great, and there is a shuttle to Stone Town if you want shopping. There are only a small amount of rooms that are clean and modern. I would highly recommend staying there.

Avoid at all costs! This hotel is disgusting (see pictures) and should not be under the Marriott brand. The rooms were in such bad shape we had to book at another hotel nearby. Zanzibar is beautiful and has so many hotel options. Pick any other over this one.

I normally have a good experience at Marriot's hotels but this one was very different due to human factors. I booked a family room on the top floor with sea view month ahead. We arrived and were given a double room on a bottom floor, very small. We were told our room had problems with them roof due to heavy winds. A few hours later we saw that the room was occupied by another family. After many words with the supervisor we decided to leave the hotel and book somewhere else. The service and food in the restaurant was excellent. The location is very nice for sunset views and swimming when the tide is high.

Hi Joyce, Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable feedback. My name is NITHIN RAVI and I am the manager at the Protea Hotel Zanzibar Mbweni Ruins. It is very unfortunate that the room booked by you has become non salable due to the heavy storm we got hit the previous night of your arrival. Since another family room was not available we provided you a double room considering you are only 02 people, and we assured you a full refund. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. The experience you described is not characteristic of the level of service we strive to provide. Please accept our sincere apologies for all the shortfalls and we hope to host you again and offer better experience.

We spent three nights here is our two young children. The beach was calm and the small pool was appreciated for the hot afternoons. We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner; the staff were wonderful and attentive. They even setup a table for us at the end of the pier one evening. The boat to Chumbe Island leaves from the pier and guests get a $20 discount. We went for a day to snorkel and explore. The rooms were super clean - there are only 13 rooms so the place is very chill. Enjoy.
