A Unique experience awaits at the Tembo House&Apartments.Tembo House Hotel&Apartments is situated at the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town by the picturesque seafront. The magnificent main Building has had various functions over the past centuries. Between 1834 and 1884 it served as the American Consulate in Zanzibar then passed on to become the trading offices of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners. Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean. To this day , the name of Cowasjee Dinwash & Partners is still visible at the main entrance of Tembo House Hotel.Tembo House Hotel has seen a few celebrities pass through is doors during the consulate era, the Conwasjee Dinwash era and as a Hotel. Mahatma Ghandi, stayed here a few weeks with the Dinwash family on his journey back to India from South Africa 1930. As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home

Tembo House Hotel earns rave reviews from travelers for its cleanliness, with special mentions of neat rooms, clean sheets, and a well-organized restaurant. The hotel's unique, historic atmosphere, accentuated by charming decor, is popular among guests. Its proximity to the beach, restaurants, and Stone Town makes it a favorite due to convenience. Travelers appreciate the variety of amenities, including pools and beach access. The spacious, clean rooms, however, receive mixed reviews for privacy and style. ...While the transfer from the airport went fine, the next transfer to our next hotel was outright scam by the reception guys... We paid our drinks and food by card for check-out... When I asked if we could pay the transfer to our next stay in Zanzibar with the hotel the reception said yes... So we paid 103.500 Tanzanian Shilling to the reception guy (check your cameras at the second reception desk at the main reception)... In the taxi we were sceptical whether the driver knew that the drive had been already paid... The reception guy went to the driver and gave him 100.000 Tanzanian Shilling (and kept 3.500 for himself), instead of the receipt (!!!)... planned to keep all the amount and let us drive with the driver so we would have had to pay the amount again!...

The breakfast is served between 8:00 and 10:00 am... By the way the service is so extraordinary that Mr Abdulaziz Hassan like a concierge helped me to find in town local sesame seeds snack (kashata za ufuta)... Thank You Mr Abdulaziz - the most friendly, helpful and wonderful man I can imagin... Thank You my friend once again and see you next time...

...There was a staff member posted at the entrance 24 hours a day. Breakfast is included in your room price, and we ate all of our breakfasts in the hotel restaurant... The fresh juices and mocktails were our favorites... Staff at the front desk and in the restaurant were all helpful and friendly... The front desk staff helped arrange transportation for us and were able to exchange US Dollars for TZA shillings, which was very helpful...

We really enjoyed our stay at Tembo House hotel. There was a bit of a mix up with our room on arrival and we weren't really happy with our ground floor suite which lacked privacy but the reception staff sorted it out and we were moved upstairs with a sea view the following day... A problem solved so thank you to reception for doing that... The breakfast was adequate and a big pat on the back for the egg chef and his female assistant, he was brilliant at his job and very well organised...he could work in any quality establishment or cruise ship without a doubt, the hotel are lucky to have him... The staff throughout the hotel were very curteous and hard working... I can highly recommend this Hotel to anybody staying in Stone Town...

Stayed here for 5 nights in October - I would recommend this place, cleaners were great, the breakfast was better than I expected (fresh waffles, pancakes, fresh fruit etc). You had beach views at breakfast, several pools to choose from, nice infinity pool on the roof with nice sunset views... staff very attentive, place was clean, prices reasonable - Would recommend... One of the things I said like about this hotel was they came around in the afternoon to prep your Mozi nets and spray the room and nets to keep the annoying creatures at bay... Nice attentive touch that we didn't have elsewhere...

We stayed in Tembo House hotel for 4 days and i couldn't have picked better... Perfect for exploring the island on foot, relaxing on the beach or going on trips... One big pool in the middle of the hotel and one on the roof terrace... The rooms are beautifully decorated with dark wood and coloured glass windows... Theres a fridge in the room as well as a kettle and coffee which was nice... The breakfast was nice too although not the hugest in terms of choice... I loved the egg station and the hibiscus juice 😋 the staff is friendly, helpful and welcoming... Free WiFi throughout out the property... The night market with various food options again is 5 min walk away...

This is THE place to stay in Stone Town! The hotel design is stylish and beautiful, with 3 swimming pools, a terrace restaurant with a view of the water, seating areas, beach lounge chairs, and rooftop spaces to view the ocean... Our room was in the annex, which is in an adjacent building... We loved our FANTASTIC, large room on the second floor, with a large en suite bathroom... Our room was air conditioned, which was so refreshing... It felt like a private oasis... There is also a pool table and seating area in the lobby of the annex... There was a staff member posted at the entrance 24 hours a day... Breakfast is included in your room price, and we ate all of our breakfasts in the hotel restaurant... They offer a huge buffet with plenty of options for breakfast food and beverages... We also ate some lunches and dinners at the restaurant... The menu has good variety and was reasonably priced... The fresh juices and mocktails were our favorites... Staff at the front desk and in the restaurant were all helpful and friendly... Tembo is located in an ideal place where the local attractions are all closely, usually within walking distance. Me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, the staff were so attentive and super friendly; there wasn't one person who didn't greet us :D The breakfast had ample choices to make and it was not too heavy... There is also an omelette station which was quite cute, they made fresh waffles and crepes too!... The hotel is located right on the beach so when you walk out back, you're greeted with the friendly faces of the locals and at night time, its just so peaceful to sit there and listen to the hustle and bustle of the city... It has all the amenities you could need for a stay in the city, coming in and out as you please because it is so close to everything... The staff went the extra mile to provide us with prayer facilities on the day we checked out as we had a very late flight...

This is a very beautiful property overlooking the ocean, perfectly located in Stone Town. We booked a room with a seaview. Unfortunately, there was a problem with our room as soon as we checked in. The AC was not working and we were moved to a room in the building next door. It was well past midnight and we had an extremely long day, so this was definitely a huge disappointment especially that the hotel was supposed to be excellent. Also, that other building faced the street and the room was noisy during the day and we did not get the seaview we were expecting. Thankfully, there's no night life in Stone City so we were able to sleep. The room was spacious and well appointed. The other annoyance was the shower which was a modern rain shower style but it wasn't working well and we literally had to walk around under the shower head to get some water. I strongly ecourage travelers to read the room description carefully and book a room with seaview because the other building is not as nice and has city views. Overall, we had a good time at the hotel as we enjoyed the breakfast, the attentive service, great location and ocean view at breakfast as well as the pool.

Don't believe their Deluxe Suite ad of beach view with balcony... It's a total scam. Especially if you are a solo female, don't go there! The windows are tiny and right next to the restaurant so you can never open up the curtains, the so called "balcony" is a piece of beach and a little fence around that it surrounded by beach boys, hagglers and hustlers that will never leave you alone! The hotel clerk (at the reception) will sell you tours when you get there a bit tired and maybe not that sharp, and will totally screw you over, connecting you with some thugs that are supposed to do "tours" but then shamelessly screw you over. (ok, not proud of it, but got cheated out of 20'000tsh in a scam I'm pretty sure involved both of them.) Then I heard hotels aren't even allowed to sell tours. So BE CAREFUL. I love to swim and they do not have a beach in front. That sucks. But then, on a positive note, the breakfast was really good and there were many (maybe less english savvy employees) that were very sweet? Just stay away from "scam suites" and reception guys and the beach.

Beautiful historic hotel, with fantastic location by the sea and in the heart of Stone Town. Everything perfect, excellent quality and variety of breakfast, large and suggestive swimming pool, with sunbeds and towels always available, even near the sea. Excellent dishes also for lunch and dinner. A few days at Tembo are absolutely recommended.

I and my gf enjoyed Tembo House a lot. Clean, Central, Pleasant ; The Best Hotel in Town. I really loved the design which is very historical and modern at the same time. Our room was really really wide. Shower was great, wifi works perfect, and the bed is super comfortable. Staff is absolutely kind. Especially the manager Rahim took care of us a lot and he helped everything we needed. Their restaurant has delicious food by the way, we had our open buffet breakfast during our stay. There are dozens of food.. lunch options are also amazing. The pool is clean and enjoyable. When you walk out of the hotel, you find yourself in the heart of the town. You can go everywhere walk distance. I recommend all of you to stay here, you will love it!

We spent a total of eight nights in Zanzibar, with three of those nights in Tembo House Hotel and five other nights at other small towns on other coasts. I wish we had spent more time at Tembo House Hotel in Stone Town because it not only provided the best complimentary hotel breakfast we had throughout our entire time in Zanzibar, but it is within walking distance to all the popular, highly-coveted tourist attractions in Stone Town. For example, the Night Food Market is only a five-minute walk from the hotel; Darajani Bazaar is only a 12-minute walk; Mama Mia Gelato is two minutes away. My point is that it is in a very convenient location. And in regards to the hotel breakfast, there is a variety of Indian currys, local tropical fruits, beef and/or chicken sausage and/or wings, juices, teas, an omelet and waffle-making station, and nutella. Lots and lots of nutella! The hotel also serves ice cream, but I believe that is a tad overpriced. Hotel amenities are also fantastic. The hotel has three pools -- one in the main, open reception area, another on the second floor (which overlooks the beach and gets a lot more sun), and a third inside their "Apartments" complex, which is an additional building that is part of their hotel. The rooms are spacious with fully functioning wall A/C units and a mini fridge with small, complimentary water bottles. The Wi-Fi is spotty and may require you to reconnect a few times during peak use (like evenings), but it's better than most other Wi-Fi throughout Zanzibar. The staff are incredibly helpful and accommodating. Whether you have questions about how to set up a Stone Town tour or restaurant recommendations or simply the hours that breakfast is served, the staff is always able to help you or if they do not know the answer to a question, they quickly seek out someone who does. 10/10 I would recommend staying here.

After reading another advisor report regarding the scam where they tell you at check in you bought a room at the "Tembo Palace" and if you wanted to stay at "Tembo House" it would be more money, it happened to me. My prepaid receipt says Tembo House. The Tembo Palace is across the street and down a sketchy alley. Dumpy place. Beware! They will try this on you. I ended up in the trashy Palace place. Thank goodness it was only one night, even after arguing my receipt shows I bought at the Tembo House.

We were so delighted to visit Tembo House Hotel for one night. The hotel is spectacular, We had reserved the double rooom with sea view and balcony and we were granted no 27 , Magnificent room with incredible sea view and sunset. The service is excellent and the restaurant outside offers many choices of menu , The buffet for the breakfeast is awesome. The pools are so nice and plenty of loungers to relax. You can walk on the beach and swim but there is many boats so unfortunately there is diesel smell when you fo on the ocean, As the first beachfront hotel within the UNESCO Heritage Site of Stone Town the ideal location of Tembo House Hotel we a tour was organized for us by our safari company and it was easy to access the many streets of Stone Town to explore the Peace Memorial Museum, the Palace Museum, Forodhani Gardens, the Old Fort, Tippu Tip’s house and all the wonders of the ancient town. We visit the museum of Freddie Mercury, that was a pure gem and emotions. Karibu Tembo!

Hotel is right by the curio shops, right by the ocean, all the restaurants and promenade. Not the 1st visit to Tembo, everytime has always been good. Within in walking distance from ferry terminal. Breakfasts are great!! Staff at reception always friendly and helpful. Can book anything with them. Look out for Captain George, you will find him outside the hotel or on the beach in front of hotel. Best prices for trips to Prison Island and Taxi rides to the north of the Island.

We had one night here at the end of our trip to Zanzibar. A nice welcome with a large triple bed room. The A/C was very effective and beds comfortable. Make sure you keep doors closed after sunset as loads of flying beasts desperate to come inside! Two pools, one rooftop one with great views of the sea and child free. The restaurant provided a reasonable breakfast with friendly staff. A alcohol free hotel but there are plenty of places nearby for a sundowner! None of the local shops sell alcohol either so good excuse to patronise local places!
