Beautiful pool, cleans rooms, great service with a smile and good meals. After a bad experience at another resort on Zanzibar, our agent rebooted us here and we were thankful she did. We enjoyed it all (I didn't partake in breakfast buffet), but the lunch and dinner menus changed daily and all was enjoyed by our group. Only cons are AC never got cool enough so ran constantly and the bathrooms are small due to age of hotel. If those are deal breakers, then try the Park Hyatt which is lovely. We enjoyed our stay at Serena.

The Serena that was, of years gone by, is no more sadly. This hotel is very tired indeed, everything is looking lack lustre including the furniture. The chairs by the bar could do with revival and soft coverings were dirty and worn out. The breakfast spread is also very poor. The dining room windows full of crow faeces. Telephone lines when trying to contact room service always ends up somewhere else. We were so disappointed and the magic of Serena Zanzibar is gone. I was really sad to see this as at one time it was one of my favourite hotel of all times I found myself asking relevant staff to clean up as it was upsetting. Now for the positive- the asset of this hotel are the staff. The 2 Concierge, Sulaiman and Yusuf remain a constant from years ago. Their enthusiasm and friendly demeanour is not tired. Courtesy and respectfulness of all the staff is to be commended. Come on Serena Zanzibar, sort this out and rescue the hotel.

Location is gorgeous, all rooms facing the ocean. Comfortable, clean rooms with great A/C- important in this very humid environment. Enjoyed the relaxation and quiet of the hotel after being in the bush with early morning and evening game drives. Breakfast was good and plentiful. I would stay here again, even though it is not a 5 star hotel, it is pleasant, beautiful and convenient for families with children.

I have stayed in many Serena Hotels including the Stone town property. However, this was the worst experience of any hotel stay. While i paid fully for 3 nights for a suite ahead of my arrival, i arrive with my family late in the evening to find that the manager saying that the Hotel is fully booked and our suite was given away. The hotel manager rushes us to a nearby hotel and Ali Ali the reservation manger write to say that while he has a room for us for one night –as for the last night we will see how we sort that out!!! The audacity! I have never had this type of treatment from any hotel, especially surprised by this type of behavior. I found that in August 2013 another guest had the same experience according to Tripadvisor and they were treated in this way since they were not white. I too am not white and wondering if this racism of the management towards non white guests.

The resort itself is a beautiful older building, historic with lots of character. I think we just had higher expectations of a “5 star resort” even for Africa standards. The photos make it look much more luxurious then it is. The room was well cleaned but the bed was a hard mattress. The couch was dirty and uncomfortable. The toilet in our room didn’t flush properly. The resort is separate from the public beach by a wall and security kept the public out but security did not interfere with the locals on the beach even when they were bathing/toileting on the beach while we were trying to eat breakfast, it was quite disturbing. The bar was nice- the staff was nice but the food that was included in our half board was sub par. Breakfast selection was better then dinner. The pool looked nice but never figured out how to get a cushion or towel. Again, I think if our standards going in were much lower- I would rate higher, but the place is advertised as a 5 star resort and our room was listed as $760 USD per night. For that much $$$$ I would expect perfection!!!! We had the opportunity to check out early and go to a different hotel, so we did.
