Beautifully decorated hotel very close to Darajani Market. Friendly staff, very good rooftop restaurant (although don't expect stunning views!) and a great base from which to explore Stone Town. Take note that you need to pay for the room in cash!

First I would like to mention that a 6 day stay in Stone Town is way too long. 3 days would have been more than adequate. That being said, we experienced the following: The good: Very nice room with beautiful furniture and lots of space. We had booked the Chilli room, which has a bedroom, sitting room and toilet and...

We stayed at House of Spices for three nights and had a great time. The building is beautiful and well decorated and the rooms are very comfortable (with a good air conditioner and fan). Cesare and Anna were great hosts who helped us explore the island on our own. Advise about how much to negotiate a taxi for and allowing...

Everything about House of Spices was exquisite; the rooms are tastefully decorated, in a style reminiscent of Morocco, which suited the dimensions of the building. The old Swahili style beds, antique ornaments and bed covers made for a romantic stay in the heart of the old town. True, there is no visa facility, but we were happily escorted to an...

If you are a black person visiting Zanzibar please stay away from House of Spices restaurant. My friends and I visited the restaurant on the 28th of Aug and we got the worst treatment ever because we are black. First of all we were served after the waiters finished attending to the white people and the funniest thing is that...

First impression are so important and Cesare the Italian owner being there to warmly greet me on arrival made me feel instantly at home. I arrived at 9.30pm, he arranged an inexpensive pick up from the airport. Dinner was still available, a delicious home made seafood pasta, the equal of anything in Italy. The hotel is a small old merchants...

We stayed here in February 2015 with 5 adults and one baby. I usually don't review on tripadvisor but this hotel was so magnificent and the owners so friendly and helpfull that I decided to make an exception. The hotel is well situated in the historic centre of Stonetown. The food is absolutely delicious, the house is beautifull, the rooms...

We stayed at the house of spices for 2 nights whilst staying in stone town. It was incredible! The staff were so wonderful and friendly, the food was great and the atmosphere was perfect but what struck me the most was the attention to detail. The house is riddled with pots of spices and art pieces and furniture which must...

Well, you must FIND this place at first. Everything, that isn't located on the main street just at the shore, is a big challenge, because you will surely get lost in the labyrinth of narrow streets of Stone town. So if you plan to return to the hotel after dusk, find one route back, that you know well and that...
