Location is great; hotel very quaint; room huge; breakfast good; restaurant food not bad either; very nice, friendly, helpful staff who can organise tours/taxis/tell you where to find certain places. One tip: consider paying the bit extra for a quiet room which doesn't front the bar nearby unless you are very tired and/or full of beer and sleep through the...

This charming hotel in the southern part of Stone Town was the perfect start of our Zanzibar holiday. We stayed two nights in a spacious and cosy room with two beautiful traditional Zanzibari beds (mind you, the mattress can be a bit hard, perfect for me personally though). The biggest plus for this hotel are very good rates for the...

Our early checkin was friendly. The room they gave us was ok, but only roof views :-( The breakfast was good with nice variety of food, but the staff is not sharp enough to make sure that everything is filled up, after finished. So we came like one hour before breakfast closing, but needed to choose from what was left...

The breakfast was good. The Rooms were amazing. The location. The staff could be more knowledgeable about the attractions around stonetown They put us in the wrong room the 1st night and called us and told us we had to move. Although it wasn't the room we booked originally, it was just a inconvenience after we unpacked to change rooms....

Stayed here recently with a friend and my 2 young children. The hotel is centrally placed, a couple of minutes away from the main street. The staff were welcoming and friendly. I was pleased with the breakfast as they provided fruits, cereals, and a cooked option. We had a triple room on the top floor which was huge and had...

This place has potential. It is an old building with some charm and atmosphere but the potential of this is lost on the current managers. There are couple of restaurants but I did not see anyone eating in them, apart from the breakfast bar which, once you got used to the hard bread and the paucity of offerings got slightly...

This hotel was a big disappointment of my last night stay in Stone Town. My arrival to the hotel wasn't welcoming at all. The hotel was empty, when I asked the receptionist, if any other guest stay in the hotel, the answer was no. They only accept credit card payment , if you pay 5% surcharge. Also when I asked...

There are hints of its past grandeur but poor maintenance and the rough climate of Stone Town have taken a tole on this hotel property. A serviceable hotel if you are looking for a mid-range price but there are better properties to be found in the same area. Our AC was marginal (contrasting with a friend's AC that resembled an...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A haven of peace and tranquility nestled in the heart of bustling stone town. This impressive landmark, dating back to the 1800’s, and boasting a private garden of lush tropical vegetation, was the first ever hotel on the island. A rich 19th-century air of elegance greets you as you walk through the original Zanzibari door. Beautiful beamed ceilings, marble floors, Persian carpets and magnificent crystal chandeliers recreate the glamour of yesteryear. “Ask for room 32 or 42 which have a double bed each and a little bit more space than the twin room I had on the first night (36).”
  • Twin room (room no. 36) - very little space and very noisy due to pigeons nesting under the roof
  • Room 32 - quite spacious
