We stayed at Kisiwa House for one night before leaving Zanzibar. Location was great, we could walk everywhere and there was some good restaurants close by. Our room was nice and clean. Obviously the building is very old so don't expect a modern, shiny standard. We liked the vibe. Breakfast was delicious (a la carte) and the guy serving us was great. My favourite part of the stay was overall service, everyone from reception to restaurant staff was so nice and helpfull. Good to know: a lot of stairs and no elevator. It didn't bother us one bit but if you have difficulty with stairs you should book something else.

I am a person that rarely writes Trip Advisor reviews, but I was so incensed by the experience today that I felt this hotel needed to be called out and shamed for their behavior! I don’t think any Traveller should have to experience what I did today......As a Traveller that has been to over 96 countries around the world and stayed in some of the best hotels, this was an experience like I have never had before... This is not a place to visit if you are a single woman of colour.. The Manager of the hotel was a rude, inappropriate individual who when confronted with a room service issue this morning, chose to argue with me the customer in the reception with his staff who I had dealt with the previous evening whose English was poor at best. I had ordered a room service dinner which I sent back twice. I then ordered another meal in its place! He advised me that I would have to pay for both meals as his staff had told him that I had eaten both meals!! Which was clearly not the case! I think the lady who brought my dinner to me had obviously had herself a nice dinner last night and decided to lie about it. I actually rather than sending the food back the second time should have just kept the plate in my room overnight as evidence! But the Manager chose to argue with me as he looked at me wholly inappropriately. You could be guaranteed if this was a man or a white person the scenario that unfolded this morning would not have. This was an unpleasant experience, and in my opinion if the owners ever read this, the manager and the errant member of staff should be fired! That’s how strongly I feel about this experience!

Dear Karen, We are extremely saddened that you have not had a fulfilling experience at the Kisiwa House, however we appreciate your feedback as it is very valuable and helps us improve our services. We are also deeply saddened that you saw us as racists we are Zanzibari’s and we pride ourselves of our mixed heritage and cosmopolitan culture, our culture and traditions are deeply steeped in tolerance and we treat all peoples equally with respect and humility as we do not see people in colour, in all our rich History at the Kisiwa House we have never experienced any problems related to racism. We truly apologize that you felt mistreated by my expressions but you would understand that once you consume a meal then the right and natural approach is to pay for the meal. The Restaurant cancelled the first order as per your request and you were billed only for the two meals you have consumed, the waitress that served you has been with the Hotel for many years and she has a very good record and she is a proud and very hard working young lady. I have personally addressed and gone through this case with my team again and have taken appropriate measure to improve our services. Kindly except my apologies. We hope we get the opportunity to host you again. Thank you. Juma Akida Sufiani Manager

Beautiful building with clean, big romantic rooms. I do not understand the complaints about noise, it was very peaceful and quiet. Breakfast was good and fast. Well received and taken care off. Recommended.

This hotel was a nice surprise - well decorated and clean! The staff was exceptional. And I loved room #9. It was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast menu was a la carte. I loved it. It was well worth the money and I will stay there again on my next trip to Zanzibar.

This enchanting boutique hotel left us with a memorable stay in Zanzibar. We were welcomed by a traditional Arabian fragrance(Bukhoor),relaxing music and a refreshing hibiscus juice at the courtyard. Very clean, good location & excellent customer service. The beautiful sea and town view from the rooftop was astonishing too. Would highly recommend and definitely come back again soon. Thank you very much Kisiwa.
